2017-18 QUICK FACTSSERIES HISTORY

For the fi rst time since the 1994-95 season, the Tigers

will get a chance to face Saint Joseph’s.

The Hawks hold a 4-0 lead in the all-time series, with

three of the four match-ups happening in the early

1980’s.

The last time the two squads met was in Philadelphia

for the Saint Joseph’s Tournament during the 1994-95

season. The Hawks jumped out to an early lead, 32-17

at the half and claimed the 74-60 win. Amy Facer led

Saint Joseph’s with 19 points and six rebounds while

Tanya Belair had 15 points and 12 rebounds for the

Tigers.

CLEARING THE GLASS Towson has found success in the rebounding battle so

far this season. For the sixth straight game, the Tigers won the

rebounding battle as they recorded 40 boards to Wagner’s 25 rebounds.

Senior forward Mary Cuevas paced the Tigers eff orts with 10 rebounds. Seven of the 10 Tigers that appeared in the game grabbed at least one rebound.

The Tigers have grabbed at least 40 rebounds in fi ve of their six games this season.

Towson enters the week ranked second in the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) with a +6.3 rebounding margin.

MAGIC MARY Towson senior forward Mary Cuevas turned in an

impressive performance against Wagner. Cuevas posted a career-high 23 points and 10

rebounds for her second straight double-double. The Madrid, Spain native shot an impressive 8-for-11

from the fl oor, including knocking down the fi rst two three-pointers of her career to open the game. She was also 5-for-6 from the foul line.

Cuevas added three blocks, two steals and an assist to complete a well-rounded stat line for the night.

TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THE TURNOVERS The Tigers took advantage of their opponent’s

turnovers in the win over Wagner. Towson pressured the Seahawks into 30 turnovers on

Thursday night. It was the most turnovers by a Tiger opponent this season.

Towson responded by scoring a season-high 30 points off of those turnovers.

The Tigers enter Tuesday’s game averaging 16.7 points off opponent turnovers this season.

WE’LL TAKE THE CHARITY Towson shot 76 percent (19-for-25) from the foul line

against Wagner. The Tigers were a perfect fi ve-for-fi ve from the line in

the fi rst half and went 10-for-12 in the fourth quarter. Leading the eff orts from the charity stripe for the

Tigers was redshirt senior guard Raine Bankston, who connected on six of her nine chances.

In addition sophomore forward Nukiya Mayo and senior forward Mary Cuevas each went fi ve-for-six.

Towson has made 10 or more shots from the foul line

in fi ve of its six games this season. Towson is shooting 71 percent from the foul line this

season which ranks third in the CAA entering play this week.

LENDING A HELPING HAND Towson did a good job of spreading the basketball

around against Wagner. The Tigers recorded 12 assists on 20 made fi eld goals. Eight of the 10 Tigers who appeared in the game

recorded at least one assist. That group was led by sophomore guard Etalyia Vogt who fi nished with three.

The Tigers have now recorded double-digit assists in four of their six games this season.

GOING DEEP Towson connected on fi ve three-pointers in the win

over Wagner. Senior forward Mary Cuevas and junior guard

Danielle Durjan each connected on two in the game. Graduate student Kayla Davis also knocked down her

fi rst triple as a Tiger. Towson is 2-1 this season when it makes at least fi ve

three-pointers in a game.

I’LL TAKE THAT Towson hauled in 13 steals in Thursday’s win over

Wagner. Redshirt senior guard Raine Bankston and junior

guard Danielle Durjan led the Tiger eff orts with three swipes each.

Towson has now posted eight or more steals in fi ve of its six games this season.

Nine Tigers have recorded one or more steals so far this year. Bankston leads the way with 12 steals on the year while sophomore guard Etalyia Vogt and Durjan are a close second with 10 swipes.

Towson enters play this week ranked third in the CAA while averaging 9.5 steals per game.

LOCK DOWN DEFENSE The Towson defense held Wagner to single digits in

the fi rst and fourth quarters. The Tigers surrendered just six points in the fi rst stanza

and held the Seahawks to just fi ve points in the fi nal 10 minutes.

It was the third and fourth times this season that Towson has held an opponent to single-digits in a quarter.

The Tigers surrendered a season-low four points in the second quarter of its contest with George Washington.

Thursday’s win marked the fi rst time the Tigers had held an opponent to single-digits in multiple quarters of the same game since they faced Wagner on Nov. 17 of last year.

DOUBLING IT UP Three Tigers will carrry double-digit scoring streaks

into Tuesday night’s game. Sophomore forward Nukiya Mayo had 11 points

against Wagner and now has recorded double-digits in three straight games.

90 AND FEELING FINE The Tigers exploded for 95 points in last Tuesday’s win

over UMBC. Towson scored 90 points for the fi rst time since last

year’s season opener against UMass Lowell. The 95 points scored by the Tigers against UMBC are

2017-18 TOWSON UNIVERSITY WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Diane Richardson, who brings 16 years of women’s

basketball coaching experience, has been named the

10th head coach in Towson University women’s basketball

program history.

Richardson was most recently an assistant coach

and the recruiting coordinator at West Virginia University

during the 2016-17 season. There she helped with player

development, scouting, game strategies and preparation.

In her role as the recruiting coordinator, she implemented

and supervised recruiting strategies which led the

Mountaineers’ 2017 recruiting class being ranked No. 17

by ESPNW. Richardson helped West Virginia win its fi rst

Big 12 Conference Championship this past season as the

Mountaineers defeated Oklahoma, Texas and No. 2 Baylor

to claim the title. West Virginia advanced to the NCAA

Tournament where the Mountaineers defeated Colonial

Athletic Association (CAA) Champion Elon before falling to

Maryland. Richardson played a key role in the development

of Tynice Martin, Lanay Montgomery and Teana Muldrow,

all of whom earned All-Big 12 Conference accolades.

Prior to her time in Morgantown, Richardson spent

four years as an assistant coach at George Washington

University. There she was responsible for player

development, scouting, recruiting, player relations and

community relations and on the fl oor game strategies.

Richardson helped the Colonials improve their win

total from 11 wins to a school record 29 wins after just

two seasons. George Washington captured a pair of

Atlantic 10 regular season and conference tournament

championships. Richardson and the Colonials made a pair

of NCAA Tournament

appearances in 2015

and 2016 and an

appearance in the

WNIT Tournament

in 2014. Richardson

also played a key role

in the development

of Jonquel Jones,

one of the most

decorated players in

George Washington

history and current

WNBA star. She also

coached four all

conference players,

four all-tournament

players and the A-10

Tournament MVP in back-to-back years.

Richardson had two successful stints as the head coach

at Riverdale Baptist High School in Upper Marlboro, Maryland.

She served as the head coach from 2001-06 and again from

2009-12 and during that time was responsible for all aspects

of building and maintaining the nationally ranked program.

Riverdale Baptist won fi ve National Championships during

Richardson’s tenure and was ranked among the USA Today

Top 10 in fi ve of her eight years. She posted a 234-32 record

and coached many talented players including Towson alum

Dominique Johnson, who went on to become a 1,000 point

scorer for the Tigers. Richardson was named the 2005 National

High School Coach of the Year and also earned district and

regional coach of the year accolades from the WBCA. She also

organized an academic enrichment program which raised the

team overall GPA to 3.6.

In between her stints at Riverdale Baptist, Richardson

spent time as an assistant coach at the University of Maryland

and American University.

At Maryland she helped the Terrapins post a 33-4 record

and earn the number one seed for the NCAA Tournament.

Richardson played a key role in the development of Crystal

Langhorne, Marissa Coleman and Kristi Tolliver, all of whom

became WNBA All-Stars.

At American Richardson served as the team liaison

with academic services, compliance and marketing. She

presented an in-depth plan and process for facilities use for

a building occupied by four other sports, university events

and academic services. Richardson helped establish the fi rst

team camp and worked with marketing, media relations

and development to set the attendance record for a single

women’s game.

Richardson earned her master’s degree in management

from Central Michigan in 1984. She holds a bachelor’s

degree in psychology and sociology from Frostburg State.

Richardson was the NCAA regional fi eld goal percentage

leader as a freshman in 1976. She also ran track at Frostburg

and was the 1979 NCAA regional champion in the 200 and

400 meter races. She earned a spot on the 1980 US Olympic

team, which did not compete in the games.

Richardson also has an extensive business background.

She was the founder and C.O.O. for the American Security

Companies. Richardson also served as the Vice President of

the National Neighborhood Lending Marketing Team for

Bank of America. She also served as the President and C.E.O.

of RCI Financial for several years.
