Our alumni and friends of Mater Dei stepped up once again to make Career Day a huge success for our junior class The day began with a keynote address to the entire class from Denise Cianciabella Johnson rsquo83 of USC Alumni and Student Career Services covering topics such as resume writing networking and career preparation The students then attend two small group sessions focusing on their career areas of interest Since the students are only able to attend two small group sessions they also have the opportunity to speak to professionals from other fields during the lunchtime Career Fair This is just one more way Mater Dei is helping to prepare students for the future Thank you to all of our 2018 Career Day Speakers

On Saturday February 10 ldquoA Taste of Mater Deirdquo returned back to campus in the Meruelo Athletic Center which was completely transformed into a signature red carpet event Marquee event sponsors The Shiley Foundation and Checkpoint Communications along with presenting dinner sponsor California Pizza Kitchen drew a huge crowd of 500 who bid on hundreds of silent and live auction items raising $400000 for school programs Fan favorites included a private jet to Las Vegas to see the Monarch football team take on Bishop Gorman High School in August followed by trips to Montana and golfing and beer tasting at the Guinness Factory in Ireland Evening entertainment included Mater Deirsquos own Jazz Band along with the infamous Citrus College Band

Major Sponsors included Farmers and Merchants Bank the Seidner Family The Fanticola and Knode Families Hampton Holley LLP The Freedman Family and the Trotter Family Thanks to current parent chairs Janine Poletti Cristina Aguirre and Yolanda Lilly for their leadership and passion in making this event a huge success Save the date for our 2019 event on Saturday February 2

MD Launches Inaugural Legacy Planning SeminarOn January 30 in partnership with the USC Marshall Schoolrsquos Family Business Program and the Tax amp Financial Group of Newport Beach Mater Dei welcomed nearly 250 attendees to hear from our panel of experts in family business and philanthropy who came to be known as the ldquoSuper Sixrdquo It was a very special evening and attendees enjoyed the humor and wisdom of our panelists and keynote speaker Plans are underway for another event in the future Click here for event highlights

Courtesy Kristen Castillo lsquo19 The Scarlet Scroll Victor Bautista is no stranger to being a helpful hand on campus From general maintenance to greeting students every day Bautistarsquos presence does not remain unnoticed As a result of his kindness the Helpful Honda team visited campus Wednesday March 7 to gift Bautista a 2018 Honda Civic after English teacher Jill Cavotta nominated Bautista for the prize

During the Super Bowl SoCal Honda released a commercial inviting viewers to participate in a scavenger hunt After completing the puzzle viewers were able to nominate someone who is deserving of a brand new Honda Civic

As Bautista checked out his new car supportive students cheered and chanted his name ldquoI love you everybody I love you Mater Deirdquo Bautista told his audience The most unique aspect of his car is a custom license plate frame with his motto ldquoNo problems only solutionsrdquo On Wednesday during office hour supportive students faculty and staff gathered in the Grotto to welcome Bautista and be a part of the Helpful Hondarsquos commercial filming

CURRENT STUDENTS WINTER SPORTS UPDATE

Thank you to all of the Mater Dei Community for your endless support of Mater Dei Athletics

Boys Basketball Coach Gary McKnight and the Monarchs had another outstanding season The team won their 23rd CIF-SS Open Division championship as well as their 30th consecutive league title They closed out the season ranked by MaxPreps as 24th in the nation and 4th in California Head coach Gary McKnight earned the 2017 National Association of Basketball Coachesrsquo award for Leadership and surpassed 1100 career wins this season On the court the Monarchs were led by three-time Trinity League Player of the year Spencer Freedman Freedman was also named CIF Player of the year and will continue his academic and athletic career next fall at Harvard

Girls Basketball Girls Basketball finished their season 23-6 and led the Trinity League with an undefeated record of 9-0 and clinched the Trinity League Champions for the 12th straight year The Lady Monarchs reached the Open Division CIF-SS semi-finals and advanced to the second round of the CIF State tournament Senior forward Emma Torbert was named the Trinity League MVP for the second straight season and will continue her academic and athletic career at University of Nevada Reno MD Coach Kevin Kiernan earned his 800th career win this season With a number of young players on this yearrsquos roster Kevin and the Monarchs are already working hard and looking forward to next year

Boys Soccer had an excellent year under the leadership of math teacher and head coach Sean Ganey They finished with an overall record of 13-3-4 and 6-1-3 in the Trinity League The team reached the Division 1 CIF-SS playoffs and hosted Mission Viejo in the first round Three boys soccer players will continue their careers at the collegeate level next year CLICK HERE for a list of all Monarchs playing at the college level next year

Girls Soccer is led by head coach and social studies teacher Matty West in his 16th season The team played a rigorousnon-league schedule hosting the Mater Dei Premier Invitational and also competing in the Catholic Butch Lee Memorial Tournament in San Diego This year the team finished fourth in the Trinity League to an exciting Spring season

Girls Water Polo won their first Division 1 CIF Southern Regional championship this season In addition they were Trinity League Champions and CIF-SS finalists under the leadership of head coach Chris Segesman in his final season The Monarchs will be led in the 2019 season by recently appointed head coach Milos Skaljac

Wrestling had a successful season led by head coach Luis Renteria in his seventh season The team took seven wrestlers to the Trinity League finals Josh Walsh Dominic Delfin Ruben Ruiz Bradley Smith Emmett McGee and Glen Nagamoto each placed top three in their respective weight divisions at Trinity League finals Sophomore Joey McLaughlin won the league championship in his weight class and finished seventh at the masterrsquos tournament which qualified him for the CIF State Championship tournament in Fresno

Ice Hockey team finished their season with a record of 3-8-1 Despite a disappointing win loss record the team can boast victories over Trinity League Rivals JSerra and Servite along with a tie to Santa Margarita The Monarchs were led by defensemen Nick Smith Ryan McDermott and Lucas Dauphinee along with Forwards Josh Hyden and Nick Andruss McDermott was honored by the ADHSHL with an All Star Game invitation while Smith received Defenseman of the Year honors from the team A very young program at Mater Dei referring both to the players on the team and the number of years in existence the Monarchs are looking forward to growing the program in the years ahead

Surf Team has been enduring early mornings in the chilly waters of the Pacific since the fall and their hard work and dedication paid off The growing team was led by seniors John Bruder and Braden Hotra along with sophomore Henri deBeauvieres The season wrapped up with the Seaview League Championships where the Monarchs took home a number of awards CLICK HERE for the Scarlet Scroll full story

Lenten Outreach

The Mater Dei Community began the Lenten season with a prayerful Ash Wednesday Mass with Fr Kiet Ta This year we had some very special guests at mass students from the Marian Alliance Schools joined us for Mass and to introduce the yearrsquos Lenten Outreach Each year the MD community comes together for a special Lenten Outreach to support a cause near and dear to the hearts of the Mater Dei Family

The Marian Alliance is made up of local Diocesan Schools from Santa Ana In support of those schools the faculty staff and students of Mater Dei came together to raise nearly $5500 These funds will support school curriculum and programs need-based financial aid and supplies for each school Thank you for your generosity

Over our Easter Break hundreds of members of the Mater Dei family traveled all over the globe Nearly 200 students chaperones and teachers from the Choral Music Program journeyed to Spain while a group of educators and students from our Foreign Language Department visited several cities in China Our Baseball team was in North Carolina and Boys Volleyball Team was in Hawaii Both groups spent the week in games and competitions Members of our Instrumental Music program and their teachers were also in Hawaii (on the island of Oahu) for festival competitions sightseeing and performances We are incredibly proud of these groups for representing Mater Dei while abroad and are blessed that all returned to us safely

Senior Musical Oh the thinks you can think Thatrsquos what the Class of 2018 taught us when they dazzled the MD family at the 44th Annual Senior Musical ndash Seussical Featuring 125 seniors this time-honored Mater Dei tradition brought seasoned and first time performers to the stage For the first time ever in its history however the Senior Musical was performed in the Maryrsquos Grotto One of the major challenges each year is finding a venue to hold the show Taking a cue from the showrsquos motto (ldquoOh the things you can thinkrdquo) Mr Scott Melvin Executive Director of Performing Arts and Mr Greg Martin AV Services Manager saw the potential for a ground-breaking experience to bring the Senior Musical home to the Grotto The audience was mesmerized by the set stage custom lighting and incredible talent of our seniors Enjoy a behind the scenes look at this wonderful show with senior Christopher Barry by CLICKING HERE

FACULTY amp STAFF

Mater Deirsquos International Student Program has grown tremendously in the last 10 years Currently 5 of our student population (approximately 120 students) come to Mater Dei from various countries including Vietnam China Eastern Europe and South America Since 2012 we have journeyed several times to China in an effort to continue our marketing efforts while connecting with parents of current Monarchs

This past March Principal Frances Clare and Activities Director Diana Neustadt traveled extensively over two weeks throughout China to Nanjing Beijing Shenyang Tianjin Shijiazhuang Guangzhou and Shanghai Ms Clare and Mrs Neustadt interviewed many future

Monarchs interested in attending our school They also spent several evenings visiting with parents and reviewing their studentrsquos progress at Mater Dei Families in China were deeply appreciative of the chance to connect with school administrators and for the holistic education their children are receiving at Mater Dei

Although both involve teaching the time with the students on the AD team versus the students in the classroom is very different ldquoIn Academic Decathlon the focus is on teamwork and learning Students of all achievement levels work together toward a common goal They are challenged with college-level material they work harder and longer than they ever thought possible and they create lasting friendships I love the interdisciplinary aspect of the program We get to study art music literature social science science economics maththey write an essay perform a speech and do an interview with judges These are such important life skills In addition we get to explore topics we wouldnrsquot normally pursue in high school over the years wersquove studied everything from Africa to innovations in renewable energy to astronomy to philosophy Itrsquos really exciting

ldquoIt was pretty much through an accident of fatemdashor maybe the work of the Holy Spiritmdashthat I ended up back to MD Something just felt right about being here I was part of a community I enjoyed teaching students who wanted to be here for the most part and who had parents who were engaged and supportive and I was given the opportunity to grow a program from the ground uprdquo

Monarchs in China 2018

Anna-Lisa George rsquo89 has been a fixture in the MDHS English Department since 1996 She has been instrumental in helping thousands of Monarchs find their full potential not only in their English studies but also through the carry over to every subject area through their development of English comprehension and composition

Through teaching Honors English I she has enjoys helping freshmen build a strong foundation for their educational journey

George attributes her teaching philosophy to two inspiring educators - Sr Frances Teresa and Mr Greg Dhuyvetter lsquo77 ldquoI appreciated that they loved their subjects deeply and they shared that love with us they challenged us to do and be our best and they treated us with dignity and respect I decided that if I could combine the best parts of each of them I would be the kind of teacher I felt every student deserved to haverdquo

George also coaches the very successful Monarch Academic Decathlon Team The 5-time Southern California Private Schools Champions and in 2016 brought home a 2nd-place state title in Division III The team moved up to Division II for this yearrsquos competition and brought home three state medals and achieved the highest MD team score ever

Jessica Hanson rsquo16 recently committed herself to the service of our Nation by taking the oath of enlistment and contracting with the US Army ROTC to commission as an Officer after graduation from UC Santa Barbara Cadet Hanson is one of the top Cadetrsquos in her class and was awarded a 3-year scholarship prior to the beginning of her freshman year at UC Santa Barbara Cadet Hanson is an outdoor guide surf instructor and surf team competitor at UC Santa Barbara Due to her outstanding achievement in all aspects of the Army ROTC program she was selected to attend Project Global Officer and study the Chinese language abroad last summer

Joshua Rogers lsquo04 and Tom Yacko lsquo04 recently began their own practice The trio looks forward to shifting focus from legal conflicts to building value Matt Josh and Tom now help Orange County clients design create and grow by proactively addressing personal estate and business matters

Carlo Valdes rsquo08 was a member of the USA Bobsled team at the 2018 PyeongChang Olympics After a track and field career at UCLA Carlo transitioned to training for bobsled and secured his spot on the team last year

ALUMNI UPDATESTravis Wear rsquo10 Began the 2017-18 basketball season as a member of the South Bay Lakers of the NBA G League where he played All-Star level basketball and was one of the best big men in the league In early March Travis signed the first of what would become two 10-day contracts with the Los Angeles Lakers Following the expiration of the second contract Travis signed with the Lakers for the reminder of the season

Girls Basketball Girls Basketball finished their season 23-6 and led the Trinity League with an undefeated record of 9-0 and clinched the Trinity League Champions for the 12th straight year The Lady Monarchs reached the Open Division CIF-SS semi-finals and advanced to the second round of the CIF State tournament Senior forward Emma Torbert was named the Trinity League MVP for the second straight season and will continue her academic and athletic career at University of Nevada Reno MD Coach Kevin Kiernan earned his 800th career win this season With a number of young players on this yearrsquos roster Kevin and the Monarchs are already working hard and looking forward to next year

Boys Soccer had an excellent year under the leadership of math teacher and head coach Sean Ganey They finished with an overall record of 13-3-4 and 6-1-3 in the Trinity League The team reached the Division 1 CIF-SS playoffs and hosted Mission Viejo in the first round Three boys soccer players will continue their careers at the collegeate level next year CLICK HERE for a list of all Monarchs playing at the college level next year

Girls Water Polo won their first Division 1 CIF Southern Regional championship this season In addition they were Trinity League Champions and CIF-SS finalists under the leadership of head coach Chris Segesman in his final season The Monarchs will be led in the 2019 season by recently appointed head coach Milos Skaljac

Wrestling had a successful season led by head coach Luis Renteria in his seventh season The team took seven wrestlers to the Trinity League finals Josh Walsh Dominic Delfin Ruben Ruiz Bradley Smith Emmett McGee and Glen Nagamoto each placed top three in their respective weight divisions at Trinity League finals Sophomore Joey McLaughlin won the league championship in his weight class and finished seventh at the masterrsquos tournament which qualified him for the CIF State Championship tournament in Fresno

Ice Hockey team finished their season with a record of 3-8-1 Despite a disappointing win loss record the team can boast victories over Trinity League Rivals JSerra and Servite along with a tie to Santa Margarita The Monarchs were led by defensemen Nick Smith Ryan McDermott and Lucas Dauphinee along with Forwards Josh Hyden and Nick Andruss McDermott was honored by the ADHSHL with an All Star Game invitation while Smith received Defenseman of the Year honors from the team A very young program at Mater Dei referring both to the players on the team and the number of years in existence the Monarchs are looking forward to growing the program in the years ahead

Lenten Outreach

The Mater Dei Community began the Lenten season with a prayerful Ash Wednesday Mass with Fr Kiet Ta This year we had some very special guests at mass students from the Marian Alliance Schools joined us for Mass and to introduce the yearrsquos Lenten Outreach Each year the MD community comes together for a special Lenten Outreach to support a cause near and dear to the hearts of the Mater Dei Family

The Marian Alliance is made up of local Diocesan Schools from Santa Ana In support of those schools the faculty staff and students of Mater Dei came together to raise nearly $5500 These funds will support school curriculum and programs need-based financial aid and supplies for each school Thank you for your generosity

Over our Easter Break hundreds of members of the Mater Dei family traveled all over the globe Nearly 200 students chaperones and teachers from the Choral Music Program journeyed to Spain while a group of educators and students from our Foreign Language Department visited several cities in China Our Baseball team was in North Carolina and Boys Volleyball Team was in Hawaii Both groups spent the week in games and competitions Members of our Instrumental Music program and their teachers were also in Hawaii (on the island of Oahu) for festival competitions sightseeing and performances We are incredibly proud of these groups for representing Mater Dei while abroad and are blessed that all returned to us safely

Senior Musical Oh the thinks you can think Thatrsquos what the Class of 2018 taught us when they dazzled the MD family at the 44th Annual Senior Musical ndash Seussical Featuring 125 seniors this time-honored Mater Dei tradition brought seasoned and first time performers to the stage For the first time ever in its history however the Senior Musical was performed in the Maryrsquos Grotto One of the major challenges each year is finding a venue to hold the show Taking a cue from the showrsquos motto (ldquoOh the things you can thinkrdquo) Mr Scott Melvin Executive Director of Performing Arts and Mr Greg Martin AV Services Manager saw the potential for a ground-breaking experience to bring the Senior Musical home to the Grotto The audience was mesmerized by the set stage custom lighting and incredible talent of our seniors Enjoy a behind the scenes look at this wonderful show with senior Christopher Barry by CLICKING HERE

Mater Deirsquos International Student Program has grown tremendously in the last 10 years Currently 5 of our student population (approximately 120 students) come to Mater Dei from various countries including Vietnam China Eastern Europe and South America Since 2012 we have journeyed several times to China in an effort to continue our marketing efforts while connecting with parents of current Monarchs

This past March Principal Frances Clare and Activities Director Diana Neustadt traveled extensively over two weeks throughout China to Nanjing Beijing Shenyang Tianjin Shijiazhuang Guangzhou and Shanghai Ms Clare and Mrs Neustadt interviewed many future

Monarchs interested in attending our school They also spent several evenings visiting with parents and reviewing their studentrsquos progress at Mater Dei Families in China were deeply appreciative of the chance to connect with school administrators and for the holistic education their children are receiving at Mater Dei

Although both involve teaching the time with the students on the AD team versus the students in the classroom is very different ldquoIn Academic Decathlon the focus is on teamwork and learning Students of all achievement levels work together toward a common goal They are challenged with college-level material they work harder and longer than they ever thought possible and they create lasting friendships I love the interdisciplinary aspect of the program We get to study art music literature social science science economics maththey write an essay perform a speech and do an interview with judges These are such important life skills In addition we get to explore topics we wouldnrsquot normally pursue in high school over the years wersquove studied everything from Africa to innovations in renewable energy to astronomy to philosophy Itrsquos really exciting

ldquoIt was pretty much through an accident of fatemdashor maybe the work of the Holy Spiritmdashthat I ended up back to MD Something just felt right about being here I was part of a community I enjoyed teaching students who wanted to be here for the most part and who had parents who were engaged and supportive and I was given the opportunity to grow a program from the ground uprdquo

Anna-Lisa George rsquo89 has been a fixture in the MDHS English Department since 1996 She has been instrumental in helping thousands of Monarchs find their full potential not only in their English studies but also through the carry over to every subject area through their development of English comprehension and composition

Through teaching Honors English I she has enjoys helping freshmen build a strong foundation for their educational journey

George attributes her teaching philosophy to two inspiring educators - Sr Frances Teresa and Mr Greg Dhuyvetter lsquo77 ldquoI appreciated that they loved their subjects deeply and they shared that love with us they challenged us to do and be our best and they treated us with dignity and respect I decided that if I could combine the best parts of each of them I would be the kind of teacher I felt every student deserved to haverdquo

George also coaches the very successful Monarch Academic Decathlon Team The 5-time Southern California Private Schools Champions and in 2016 brought home a 2nd-place state title in Division III The team moved up to Division II for this yearrsquos competition and brought home three state medals and achieved the highest MD team score ever

Joshua Rogers lsquo04 and Tom Yacko lsquo04 recently began their own practice The trio looks forward to shifting focus from legal conflicts to building value Matt Josh and Tom now help Orange County clients design create and grow by proactively addressing personal estate and business matters

Carlo Valdes rsquo08 was a member of the USA Bobsled team at the 2018 PyeongChang Olympics After a track and field career at UCLA Carlo transitioned to training for bobsled and secured his spot on the team last year

ALUMNI UPDATESTravis Wear rsquo10 Began the 2017-18 basketball season as a member of the South Bay Lakers of the NBA G League where he played All-Star level basketball and was one of the best big men in the league In early March Travis signed the first of what would become two 10-day contracts with the Los Angeles Lakers Following the expiration of the second contract Travis signed with the Lakers for the reminder of the season

During the Super Bowl SoCal Honda released a commercial inviting viewers to participate in a scavenger hunt After completing the puzzle viewers were able to nominate someone who is deserving of a brand new Honda Civic

As Bautista checked out his new car supportive students cheered and chanted his name ldquoI love you everybody I love you Mater Deirdquo Bautista told his audience The most unique aspect of his car is a custom license plate frame with his motto ldquoNo problems only solutionsrdquo On Wednesday during office hour supportive students faculty and staff gathered in the Grotto to welcome Bautista and be a part of the Helpful Hondarsquos commercial filming

Boys Basketball Coach Gary McKnight and the Monarchs had another outstanding season The team won their 23rd CIF-SS Open Division championship as well as their 30th consecutive league title They closed out the season ranked by MaxPreps as 24th in the nation and 4th in California Head coach Gary McKnight earned the 2017 National Association of Basketball Coachesrsquo award for Leadership and surpassed 1100 career wins this season On the court the Monarchs were led by three-time Trinity League Player of the year Spencer Freedman Freedman was also named CIF Player of the year and will continue his academic and athletic career next fall at Harvard

CURRENT STUDENTS WINTER SPORTS UPDATE

Thank you to all of the Mater Dei Community for your endless support of Mater Dei Athletics

Boys Basketball Coach Gary McKnight and the Monarchs had another outstanding season The team won their 23rd CIF-SS Open Division championship as well as their 30th consecutive league title They closed out the season ranked by MaxPreps as 24th in the nation and 4th in California Head coach Gary McKnight earned the 2017 National Association of Basketball Coachesrsquo award for Leadership and surpassed 1100 career wins this season On the court the Monarchs were led by three-time Trinity League Player of the year Spencer Freedman Freedman was also named CIF Player of the year and will continue his academic and athletic career next fall at Harvard

Girls Basketball Girls Basketball finished their season 23-6 and led the Trinity League with an undefeated record of 9-0 and clinched the Trinity League Champions for the 12th straight year The Lady Monarchs reached the Open Division CIF-SS semi-finals and advanced to the second round of the CIF State tournament Senior forward Emma Torbert was named the Trinity League MVP for the second straight season and will continue her academic and athletic career at University of Nevada Reno MD Coach Kevin Kiernan earned his 800th career win this season With a number of young players on this yearrsquos roster Kevin and the Monarchs are already working hard and looking forward to next year

Boys Soccer had an excellent year under the leadership of math teacher and head coach Sean Ganey They finished with an overall record of 13-3-4 and 6-1-3 in the Trinity League The team reached the Division 1 CIF-SS playoffs and hosted Mission Viejo in the first round Three boys soccer players will continue their careers at the collegeate level next year CLICK HERE for a list of all Monarchs playing at the college level next year

Girls Soccer is led by head coach and social studies teacher Matty West in his 16th season The team played a rigorousnon-league schedule hosting the Mater Dei Premier Invitational and also competing in the Catholic Butch Lee Memorial Tournament in San Diego This year the team finished fourth in the Trinity League to an exciting Spring season

Girls Water Polo won their first Division 1 CIF Southern Regional championship this season In addition they were Trinity League Champions and CIF-SS finalists under the leadership of head coach Chris Segesman in his final season The Monarchs will be led in the 2019 season by recently appointed head coach Milos Skaljac

Wrestling had a successful season led by head coach Luis Renteria in his seventh season The team took seven wrestlers to the Trinity League finals Josh Walsh Dominic Delfin Ruben Ruiz Bradley Smith Emmett McGee and Glen Nagamoto each placed top three in their respective weight divisions at Trinity League finals Sophomore Joey McLaughlin won the league championship in his weight class and finished seventh at the masterrsquos tournament which qualified him for the CIF State Championship tournament in Fresno

Ice Hockey team finished their season with a record of 3-8-1 Despite a disappointing win loss record the team can boast victories over Trinity League Rivals JSerra and Servite along with a tie to Santa Margarita The Monarchs were led by defensemen Nick Smith Ryan McDermott and Lucas Dauphinee along with Forwards Josh Hyden and Nick Andruss McDermott was honored by the ADHSHL with an All Star Game invitation while Smith received Defenseman of the Year honors from the team A very young program at Mater Dei referring both to the players on the team and the number of years in existence the Monarchs are looking forward to growing the program in the years ahead

Surf Team has been enduring early mornings in the chilly waters of the Pacific since the fall and their hard work and dedication paid off The growing team was led by seniors John Bruder and Braden Hotra along with sophomore Henri deBeauvieres The season wrapped up with the Seaview League Championships where the Monarchs took home a number of awards CLICK HERE for the Scarlet Scroll full story

Lenten Outreach

The Mater Dei Community began the Lenten season with a prayerful Ash Wednesday Mass with Fr Kiet Ta This year we had some very special guests at mass students from the Marian Alliance Schools joined us for Mass and to introduce the yearrsquos Lenten Outreach Each year the MD community comes together for a special Lenten Outreach to support a cause near and dear to the hearts of the Mater Dei Family

The Marian Alliance is made up of local Diocesan Schools from Santa Ana In support of those schools the faculty staff and students of Mater Dei came together to raise nearly $5500 These funds will support school curriculum and programs need-based financial aid and supplies for each school Thank you for your generosity

Over our Easter Break hundreds of members of the Mater Dei family traveled all over the globe Nearly 200 students chaperones and teachers from the Choral Music Program journeyed to Spain while a group of educators and students from our Foreign Language Department visited several cities in China Our Baseball team was in North Carolina and Boys Volleyball Team was in Hawaii Both groups spent the week in games and competitions Members of our Instrumental Music program and their teachers were also in Hawaii (on the island of Oahu) for festival competitions sightseeing and performances We are incredibly proud of these groups for representing Mater Dei while abroad and are blessed that all returned to us safely

Senior Musical Oh the thinks you can think Thatrsquos what the Class of 2018 taught us when they dazzled the MD family at the 44th Annual Senior Musical ndash Seussical Featuring 125 seniors this time-honored Mater Dei tradition brought seasoned and first time performers to the stage For the first time ever in its history however the Senior Musical was performed in the Maryrsquos Grotto One of the major challenges each year is finding a venue to hold the show Taking a cue from the showrsquos motto (ldquoOh the things you can thinkrdquo) Mr Scott Melvin Executive Director of Performing Arts and Mr Greg Martin AV Services Manager saw the potential for a ground-breaking experience to bring the Senior Musical home to the Grotto The audience was mesmerized by the set stage custom lighting and incredible talent of our seniors Enjoy a behind the scenes look at this wonderful show with senior Christopher Barry by CLICKING HERE

Mater Deirsquos International Student Program has grown tremendously in the last 10 years Currently 5 of our student population (approximately 120 students) come to Mater Dei from various countries including Vietnam China Eastern Europe and South America Since 2012 we have journeyed several times to China in an effort to continue our marketing efforts while connecting with parents of current Monarchs

This past March Principal Frances Clare and Activities Director Diana Neustadt traveled extensively over two weeks throughout China to Nanjing Beijing Shenyang Tianjin Shijiazhuang Guangzhou and Shanghai Ms Clare and Mrs Neustadt interviewed many future

Monarchs interested in attending our school They also spent several evenings visiting with parents and reviewing their studentrsquos progress at Mater Dei Families in China were deeply appreciative of the chance to connect with school administrators and for the holistic education their children are receiving at Mater Dei

Although both involve teaching the time with the students on the AD team versus the students in the classroom is very different ldquoIn Academic Decathlon the focus is on teamwork and learning Students of all achievement levels work together toward a common goal They are challenged with college-level material they work harder and longer than they ever thought possible and they create lasting friendships I love the interdisciplinary aspect of the program We get to study art music literature social science science economics maththey write an essay perform a speech and do an interview with judges These are such important life skills In addition we get to explore topics we wouldnrsquot normally pursue in high school over the years wersquove studied everything from Africa to innovations in renewable energy to astronomy to philosophy Itrsquos really exciting

ldquoIt was pretty much through an accident of fatemdashor maybe the work of the Holy Spiritmdashthat I ended up back to MD Something just felt right about being here I was part of a community I enjoyed teaching students who wanted to be here for the most part and who had parents who were engaged and supportive and I was given the opportunity to grow a program from the ground uprdquo

Monarchs in China 2018

Anna-Lisa George rsquo89 has been a fixture in the MDHS English Department since 1996 She has been instrumental in helping thousands of Monarchs find their full potential not only in their English studies but also through the carry over to every subject area through their development of English comprehension and composition

Through teaching Honors English I she has enjoys helping freshmen build a strong foundation for their educational journey

George attributes her teaching philosophy to two inspiring educators - Sr Frances Teresa and Mr Greg Dhuyvetter lsquo77 ldquoI appreciated that they loved their subjects deeply and they shared that love with us they challenged us to do and be our best and they treated us with dignity and respect I decided that if I could combine the best parts of each of them I would be the kind of teacher I felt every student deserved to haverdquo

George also coaches the very successful Monarch Academic Decathlon Team The 5-time Southern California Private Schools Champions and in 2016 brought home a 2nd-place state title in Division III The team moved up to Division II for this yearrsquos competition and brought home three state medals and achieved the highest MD team score ever

Jessica Hanson rsquo16 recently committed herself to the service of our Nation by taking the oath of enlistment and contracting with the US Army ROTC to commission as an Officer after graduation from UC Santa Barbara Cadet Hanson is one of the top Cadetrsquos in her class and was awarded a 3-year scholarship prior to the beginning of her freshman year at UC Santa Barbara Cadet Hanson is an outdoor guide surf instructor and surf team competitor at UC Santa Barbara Due to her outstanding achievement in all aspects of the Army ROTC program she was selected to attend Project Global Officer and study the Chinese language abroad last summer

Joshua Rogers lsquo04 and Tom Yacko lsquo04 recently began their own practice The trio looks forward to shifting focus from legal conflicts to building value Matt Josh and Tom now help Orange County clients design create and grow by proactively addressing personal estate and business matters

Carlo Valdes rsquo08 was a member of the USA Bobsled team at the 2018 PyeongChang Olympics After a track and field career at UCLA Carlo transitioned to training for bobsled and secured his spot on the team last year

ALUMNI UPDATESTravis Wear rsquo10 Began the 2017-18 basketball season as a member of the South Bay Lakers of the NBA G League where he played All-Star level basketball and was one of the best big men in the league In early March Travis signed the first of what would become two 10-day contracts with the Los Angeles Lakers Following the expiration of the second contract Travis signed with the Lakers for the reminder of the season

Senior Musical Oh the thinks you can think Thatrsquos what the Class of 2018 taught us when they dazzled the MD family at the 44th Annual Senior Musical ndash Seussical Featuring 125 seniors this time-honored Mater Dei tradition brought seasoned and first time performers to the stage For the first time ever in its history however the Senior Musical was performed in the Maryrsquos Grotto One of the major challenges each year is finding a venue to hold the show Taking a cue from the showrsquos motto (ldquoOh the things you can thinkrdquo) Mr Scott Melvin Executive Director of Performing Arts and Mr Greg Martin AV Services Manager saw the potential for a ground-breaking experience to bring the Senior Musical home to the Grotto The audience was mesmerized by the set stage custom lighting and incredible talent of our seniors Enjoy a behind the scenes look at this wonderful show with senior Christopher Barry by CLICKING HERE

Mater Deirsquos International Student Program has grown tremendously in the last 10 years Currently 5 of our student population (approximately 120 students) come to Mater Dei from various countries including Vietnam China Eastern Europe and South America Since 2012 we have journeyed several times to China in an effort to continue our marketing efforts while connecting with parents of current Monarchs

This past March Principal Frances Clare and Activities Director Diana Neustadt traveled extensively over two weeks throughout China to Nanjing Beijing Shenyang Tianjin Shijiazhuang Guangzhou and Shanghai Ms Clare and Mrs Neustadt interviewed many future

Monarchs interested in attending our school They also spent several evenings visiting with parents and reviewing their studentrsquos progress at Mater Dei Families in China were deeply appreciative of the chance to connect with school administrators and for the holistic education their children are receiving at Mater Dei

Although both involve teaching the time with the students on the AD team versus the students in the classroom is very different ldquoIn Academic Decathlon the focus is on teamwork and learning Students of all achievement levels work together toward a common goal They are challenged with college-level material they work harder and longer than they ever thought possible and they create lasting friendships I love the interdisciplinary aspect of the program We get to study art music literature social science science economics maththey write an essay perform a speech and do an interview with judges These are such important life skills In addition we get to explore topics we wouldnrsquot normally pursue in high school over the years wersquove studied everything from Africa to innovations in renewable energy to astronomy to philosophy Itrsquos really exciting

ldquoIt was pretty much through an accident of fatemdashor maybe the work of the Holy Spiritmdashthat I ended up back to MD Something just felt right about being here I was part of a community I enjoyed teaching students who wanted to be here for the most part and who had parents who were engaged and supportive and I was given the opportunity to grow a program from the ground uprdquo

Monarchs in China 2018

Anna-Lisa George rsquo89 has been a fixture in the MDHS English Department since 1996 She has been instrumental in helping thousands of Monarchs find their full potential not only in their English studies but also through the carry over to every subject area through their development of English comprehension and composition

Through teaching Honors English I she has enjoys helping freshmen build a strong foundation for their educational journey

George attributes her teaching philosophy to two inspiring educators - Sr Frances Teresa and Mr Greg Dhuyvetter lsquo77 ldquoI appreciated that they loved their subjects deeply and they shared that love with us they challenged us to do and be our best and they treated us with dignity and respect I decided that if I could combine the best parts of each of them I would be the kind of teacher I felt every student deserved to haverdquo

George also coaches the very successful Monarch Academic Decathlon Team The 5-time Southern California Private Schools Champions and in 2016 brought home a 2nd-place state title in Division III The team moved up to Division II for this yearrsquos competition and brought home three state medals and achieved the highest MD team score ever

Jessica Hanson rsquo16 recently committed herself to the service of our Nation by taking the oath of enlistment and contracting with the US Army ROTC to commission as an Officer after graduation from UC Santa Barbara Cadet Hanson is one of the top Cadetrsquos in her class and was awarded a 3-year scholarship prior to the beginning of her freshman year at UC Santa Barbara Cadet Hanson is an outdoor guide surf instructor and surf team competitor at UC Santa Barbara Due to her outstanding achievement in all aspects of the Army ROTC program she was selected to attend Project Global Officer and study the Chinese language abroad last summer

Joshua Rogers lsquo04 and Tom Yacko lsquo04 recently began their own practice The trio looks forward to shifting focus from legal conflicts to building value Matt Josh and Tom now help Orange County clients design create and grow by proactively addressing personal estate and business matters

Carlo Valdes rsquo08 was a member of the USA Bobsled team at the 2018 PyeongChang Olympics After a track and field career at UCLA Carlo transitioned to training for bobsled and secured his spot on the team last year

ALUMNI UPDATESTravis Wear rsquo10 Began the 2017-18 basketball season as a member of the South Bay Lakers of the NBA G League where he played All-Star level basketball and was one of the best big men in the league In early March Travis signed the first of what would become two 10-day contracts with the Los Angeles Lakers Following the expiration of the second contract Travis signed with the Lakers for the reminder of the season
