It has been a very busy last few weeks at Scarborough Primary School
with all classes producing a high standard of classroom work. I have
had the pleasure of spending time in each classroom observing our
teachers and talking with the children about what they are learning.
I am able to announce that Mrs Erica Salt has been substantively appointed to the
position of Deputy Principal at Scarborough Primary School. Mrs Salt has worked at a
number of schools holding leadership positions and has always demonstrated a wealth
of knowledge and skills at our school. I am sure you will join me in congratulating her
in becoming a permanent member of our staff.
Over the last few weeks I have noticed a few non-school uniform jumpers and hats
being worn by students. Our school dress code is on the school website located in the
‘Policies’ section. The P&C provide a valuable service to our community by
operating the uniform shop. Current uniform prices and order forms are on the
website under the ‘P&C’ section. Please ensure that students come to school dressed in
uniform. The uniform shop will be open on 29 June from 2.15 - 3.20pm, or otherwise
on a ‘by request’ basis. Second hand uniforms are available.
Umbrellas are a great way to keep dry before and after school. I recently spoke to
students regarding the use of umbrellas at recess and lunch times. I asked students to
keep them in bags during these periods. If it is raining, the library opens and students
are able to play in the under cover area.
Our Healthy Food and Drink Policy has been reviewed by the school board during semester one. Our school has adopted a whole of school approach and aims to promote nutritional eating habits in a safe, supportive environment for all children. We believe that early childhood is an important time for establishing lifelong, healthy eating habits and can benefit the children in both the short and long term. The new policy is on our school website and I encourage you to take a few minutes to read the document. Scarborough Primary School will adopt a whole school approach to promote healthy lifestyles through the following:
Before school fitness programs
Newsletter communications on healthy eating and/or health promoting messages
Crunch & Sip program - a set break time where children can eat fruit or vegetables and drink water in the classroom
Include fundraising initiatives which promote physical activity (such as lapathons).
Include non-food related fundraising initiatives
Teachers will use non-food based reward systems in the classroom to support the healthy ethos of the school and reinforce the health lessons taught in the
classroom.
Wrapper Free Wednesday We ask our families to support this healthy lifestyle approach by
Not sharing food brought in from home
The children’s birthdays are well celebrated at school with the teacher and

classmates. To support our Healthy Food and Drink Policy families are not to send in snacks or birthday cakes to their child’s classroom.
Families are encouraged to provide their child/ren with cut up fruit or vegetables (bitesize) and a water bottle for Crunch & Sip.
Parents are encouraged to provide a healthy recess and lunch for their child/ren.
The new Healthy Food and Drink Policy is located in the Policies section of our website and will be in place from the beginning of term three. If you have any queries regarding the policy please see your classroom teachers, any of the school board members or one of the staff in the office.
Miss Moothie went on an excursion with 10 students from Room 4 and 5 earlier this week. Our school cow visited
with her sisters from other schools participating in the Picasso Cow program. Thank you to Mrs Jones and the
students involved in the program for their ongoing efforts. The program was limited to only 10 schools and thanks to
Mrs Jones our students were able to be involved. There is some information later in the newsletter on her
adventures. The portfolio outlining the Picasso Cow program is available in the front office for those parents and
students interested.
I am taking some leave for the last week of term; in my absence Mrs Salt will be principal. I wish everyone a safe and
happy school holiday period. School returns for students on Tuesday 19 July.

Year 3/4 Marble Run Investigation! By Lois Hall
On the 15 of June year 3/4 made marble runs in
their groups for Science and Design and
Technology. They had to make a fast, a medium
and slow one. Here we have Serena to tell you a
bit more. “I think the marble runs were really
fun because we learnt how to work together as a
team and build things.”
Every group at least made one Lego marble
run including my group. We used all sorts
of equipment such as cardboard tubes,
dominos, plastic bottles, tape and boxes.
Our buddies from pre-primary came in and
joined us in the fun!
This year, our Inclusivity Council, in conjunction with
our Reconciliation Action Plan working group (made
up of staff, parents and students), have been busy
organising a wonderful selection of activities to help
us celebrate NAIDOC Week. Hopefully you will
already have received the colouring competitions
which can be placed into the box in the front
office. Below are details of just some of the events
that will take place during this week.
Native plants being added to our nature playground
Sand story-writing and art with buddies
Indigenous games during Physical Education
Years 2 to 4 excursion to Herdsman Lake with local Aboriginal elder
Water Corp incursion: Water in Aboriginal culture
We will also be holding a NAIDOC Week assembly on Thursday 30 June at 2.15pm when we will showcase
some of the learning that has happened across the week. This will be followed by a P&C organised barbecue.
We invite all families and community members to join us for this event.
