Scanner Log in Names

• The scanner applications are now installed locally on all of the scanner computers– This means you don’t have to worry about

logging in to a separate username anymore– If the scanner folder doesn’t show up under

programs it is a problem with the computer and you should post it on repairs and contact someone from the repairs staff or Terry

• Even if you can’t get to the scanner programs (OmniPage/Photoshop) from the start menu you can still access them while you wait for the computer to be fixed – You can find them through the C drive.• Go to MyComputer ->C: drive->program files

– From Here you can find Photoshop at Adobe->Photoshop->photoshop.exe

– Or OmniPage at Scansoft->OmniPage Pro 14.0->OmniPage.exe

Saved Files

• All Scanned Files are saved in:– C:\Data\”Date” (whatever date it was scanned on)– These folders will not be cleared out frequently, so

be sure to inform Users to delete any personal material themselves (i.e. passports, social security cards etc)• However this can be a good thing if some people lose

things without saving them. Generally you can go back to that same computer and find them.

Buttons

• The Buttons no longer work, so you aren’t required to know what each one of them does (Seeing as they no longer do anything). However we will teach you the alternate way of accessing each of these programs and scanning through them.

Photoshop

• Photoshop is a bitmap/raster program– This means that images are saved on a pixel by pixel basis

• The amount of detail in an image depends on its pixel dimensions– A measure of this is ‘DPI’ meaning ‘dots per inch’– General Image Resolution Guide

• Web Viewing: 72 dpi• Print: 300 dpi

• You can improve the quality of a picture by printing as a higher resolution

Page 15: Scanner Applications Fall ‘08. Scanner Log in Names The scanner applications are now installed locally on all of the scanner computers – This means you

Colors and Photoshop

• There are four different color schemes possible– Black/White– Grayscale– CMYK– RGB

• Where your end product will be designates which color scheme you will choose for your image:– Web Viewing/TV/Any other monitor: RGB (more accurate rendering by the

viewing media because all monitors/ TVs/etc use Red/Green/Blue lights to create images)

– Print Media: CMYK (more accurate rendering of the picture by the printer because high quality printers use Cyan/Magenta/Yellow/Black cartridges)

File Size

• File size– The correlation is as follows, higher resolution

results in a better quality image, but also larger file size.

• Saving images as .jpeg or .gif compresses the file size– However, every time you save a jpeg image

again you reduce image quality. After repeated saves the losses in picture quality will begin to be apparent.

document go to File → Open or Ctrl+O• To create a new document you can go to File

→ New or Ctrl+N– You can specify

• File Size• Resolution• Color Mode (RGB, CMYK, Grayscale)

– Can also be changed by going to Image → Mode• Background color

Layers

• Photoshop makes use of ‘layers’ to make adjustments of pictures. • Make sure that the layer is not locked before you modify a

layer.• Images that are created with numerous layers can

sometimes be very large. To decrease image size you can use the ‘Flatten Image’ option on the layers toolbar
