One way to describe the size of something is to compare it with the size of something else.

Because maps cover large regions, we use a scale to determine the distance between two places.
The measured distance between two points is called physical distance.
Calculating Distance Using Scale
You’ll need a text book - page 19 – and a piece of paper
Construct a paper ruler:1. Place a strip of paper along
the scale line.2. Make a pencil mark at the 0,
100 km and 200 km points.3. Place the 200 km mark you have just made at
0 on the line scale and mark off another 200 km in 100 km intervals.
4. Continue making marks until your ruler is long enough.
5. Be sure to label your marks!

community measured their own time?

Important Time Zone Facts
o Lines of longitude are used to mark time zones.
o Each time zone is 15° wide, the distance the sun travels in one hour.
o The Prime Meridian, which passes through Greenwich, England, is the 0° longitude location or starting point where time zones are measured east and west of that line.

o Time zones to the East of the Prime Meridian are one hour ahead, and time zones to the West of the Prime Meridian are one hour behind.
