Workers are constantly exposed to fall and other hazards that continue to be concerning on a day to day basis. With the demands to complete projects more rapidly, the chance of injuring workers increases dramatically due to shortcuts and time constraints. One of the main concerns in the construction industry is scaffolding and fall safety. The Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that 72% of workers who died resulted in failure to construct the scaffold properly and other associated fall hazards. In today’s growing industry, scaffolds are often used. August 2013 Nine out of every 10 people aged under 30 admit to suffering the new age phenomenon of "nomophobia", the fear of having no mobile phone. Creating level ground and stable work surfaces is a keycomponent to scaffold safety Always ensure baseplates are level or mud sills (and other forms offoundations) are set and level for adequate workingconditions Always refer to manufacturerrsquos guidelines forproper set up and use of any scaffold Other hazardsassociated with scaffold safety include

bull Falls from elevationbull Improper use of fall arrest systemsbull Scaffold collapse or planking giving awaybull Struck by falling tools or debrisbull Electrocution (Overhead Power Lines)

Proper training by a qualified person is essential toensuring your employees are performing their worksafely Proper education erectingdismantling andinspection of scaffolds on the jobsite are pivotal inreducing andor eliminating the chance of a scaffoldcollapse from occurring Inspections of fall arrestsystems must be completed prior to each work shift byany employee who will use them Any defects (includingharness lanyards andor connectors) must be taken outof service until the competent person has reviewed theinspection of any equipment At that point thecompetent person should ensure the employees areusing the fall arrest systems correctly

Proper incorporation of a competent person isfundamental for safety The duty of a competent personfor scaffold safety includes

bull Scaffolds can only be erected moved dismantled oraltered under the supervision of a competent personbull Inspect the scaffold(s) for visible defects before each
