The January Scroll Saw SIG was at Floyd Gibson’s shop, cutting out 3-D dolphins, a 911 memorable, and other 3D patterns. Floyd also helped Holly put togeth-er her Flatmaster sand-er and gave a demon-stration on the proper way to set up and use the machine. The in-stallation went well, and only took trips to 2 dif-ferent stores to get the right parts.

SIG Information

A “SIG” (Special Interest Group) is a gathering of woodworkers at a member’s workshop to discuss and do projects relat-

ed to the Group’s interest. Any SAW member or guest of a SAW member may just show up at the meeting. Times and lo-cations for each SIG is given in the Calendar on page 3.

Novice SIG Contact persons: Clayton Nye (916-215-5349)

The SAW Novice group met under cold dark rainy skies on January 7th at Paul Verlinde’s woodshop. Fortunately the spirit

and mood in Paul’s shop was much warmer and welcoming as we focused on wood planers and jointers. It was a real ex-travaganza of machinery to behold, with Paul having three planers and two jointers available in his woodshop for SAW members to observe and learn upon. The SIG covered the nuts and bolts of planers and jointers, covering different fea-tures on machinery, cutting knife systems, power requirements, and even how to feed materials into or on to machines. It was a long list of topics and discussion points.

The February SAW Novice SIG will cover a topic useful and essential to any woodworker: applying primers and finishes

on woodworking projects. Learn the trade secrets of painters and finishers know, including how to create eye-popping finish coats. Learn how to minimize runs and sags in your finishes, and even alternative methods to apply finishes. We will cover some of the basic elements of wood finishing many woodworkers forget or don’t realize. Come out to Paul Verlinde’s wood-shop on February 4th at 10:00 AM. Refreshments and drinks will also be provided!

Scroll Saw SIG Contact person: Holly Lovvo

We had the January Scroll Saw SIG at Floyd's shop, cutting out 3-D Dolphins, a 911 memorable and other 3D patterns.

Floyd also helped me put together my Flatmaster sander and gave a demonstration on the proper way to set up and use

the machine. The installation went well, and only took a trip to 2 different stores to get the right parts, .

In February, we will be back in our shop with intarsia patterns. I will have the patterns and wood to practice with, but feel

free to bring your own pattern or wood if you have something special you would like to work on. Intarsia is best done with a Dremel tool. We have 2 we can share, but if you have your own, you may want to bring it along.

Special note: February is typically a wet month. There is a possibility the approach to our shop from the south (Elverta and Sorento Road) will be flooded, so you may need to approach from the north side (Rio Linda/Pleasant Grove road). In addi-tion, stay on the gravel road and driveway portions. Four-wheel drive will not help if you sink in the softer areas up to your axle. We will be outside to guide you to a safe parking spot. We don’t want another stuck-in-the-mud.

Furniture Projects SIG Contact person: Clayton Nye

There was a good turnout for the January SIG at Paul Verlinde’s shop. The group discussed how they wanted to see the SIG go in 2017. The plan is to have the attendees make their own examples of furniture pieces, and the SIG meetings will for discussing design and execution ideas with comments on the members’ examples. The first item to be tackled will be a simple table

For the February SIG attendees can bring in some plans for a table they want to build - something small and simple

enough that it can be brought into future SIG meetings. There will be reference material for discussion of table designs, and we will review some of the plans brought in.

Hand Cut Dovetail SIG Contact person: Dave Traversi

The Hand Cut Dovetail SIG in February will return to dovetail basics, specifically“ through dovetails.” As always I welcome folks new to hand cut dovetails as well as anyone who would like to get a refresher course or just have some fun practicing this fundamental type of woodworking joinery in the group setting. Remember that signup is required for this SIG and it is limited to 6. This is a hands-on SIG that requires participants to bring the following tools: Dovetail saw, marking gauge, two sharp chisels (1/4" and 1/2"), mallet, marking knife, dovetail marker or bevel gauge, and a sharp pencil. Optional tools: fret saw, dividers (2 pair). If you are a little shy of the complete tool list - call me - I have a few tools to loan.

Lathe Turning SIG Contact person: Jack Stellman

The February Lathe SIG will be held at my shop and will be on how to make a simple bowl using the basic tools that were discussed in January.

February 2017 SAW NEWSLETTER Page 4

A Gridley woodworker (Sacramento Victorian home restorer) died and left thousands of tools. About 80% are hand tools such as planes, scrapers, routers, draw knives, spoke shaves, rasps, files, back saws, folding rulers, layout equipment, etc. Some are vintage, some not. The man’s wife and grown children know the value of tools, but you will find diamonds in the rough and you will not pay an arm and leg for them. Make an offer…be prepared for a counter.

From the General Meeting — October 4th

Our speaker for January was our own club Secretary, Jim Cauley. Jim gave another very nice safety lecture again. There were many serious points, and with Jim alibiing a bit, made the lecture interesting. He also had small first aid kits to hand out to winners of questions he threw to the audience. It was a good reminder on being safe in the shop. Thanks, Jim! And everyone, take the safety to heart and have fun out there.

Joe Orbeck (left) made a pen jig for assembling inlay pen blanks. Before he made this, the had problems dropping the blank which caused all the in-lay pieces to scatter. This jig holds everything securely and provides hand rests.

David Traversi (left) made a fastener cabinet of pine with 21 half blind dovetailed drawers. It also featured a resawn book matched door of spalted maple. He also showed an end table of 8/4 elm with bentwood laminated legs and hand cut mitered dovetails These dovetails will be shown in his January Dovetail SIG.

Tom Harrington (above left) shows a drill-powered wood lathe he has. It doesn’t necessarily take much to do woodworking.

January Show and Tell

Windfall Firewood Many people suffered tree losses in the January storms. Our Treasurer, Tom Harring-ton lost a Chinese Elm in his front yard. He was sitting in his living room next to the win-dows. Luckily, no injury or damage occurred, just a lot of firewood.

(Editor’s note: I didn’t lose a tree this year, but have in years past. I’ve noticed that they fall often fall pointing North, like this one.)

There was a good turnout for the Jan-uary Furniture SIG. The group dis-cussed how they wanted to see the SIG go in 2017. The plan is to have the attendees make their own exam-ples of furniture pieces and the SIG meetings will for discussing design and execution ideas with comments on the members’ examples. The first item to be tackled will be a table, with members bringing plans and discus-sion of the designs.
