Is this the best way ?
• No, it is the way we do it….. That does not make it the best for you…. Try several until you find what you are comfortable with.
![Page 3: Shaping a Simple Intarsia Rose](https://reader034.vdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022052214/586b88cf1a28ab42788b9742/html5/thumbnails/3.jpg)
We start by gluing the pattern to the board, we use rubber cement
![Page 4: Shaping a Simple Intarsia Rose](https://reader034.vdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022052214/586b88cf1a28ab42788b9742/html5/thumbnails/4.jpg)
We choose the grain and color selection to cut
![Page 5: Shaping a Simple Intarsia Rose](https://reader034.vdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022052214/586b88cf1a28ab42788b9742/html5/thumbnails/5.jpg)
The piece we are working with is then cut out of the pattern
![Page 6: Shaping a Simple Intarsia Rose](https://reader034.vdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022052214/586b88cf1a28ab42788b9742/html5/thumbnails/6.jpg)
![Page 7: Shaping a Simple Intarsia Rose](https://reader034.vdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022052214/586b88cf1a28ab42788b9742/html5/thumbnails/7.jpg)
The saw we use is the DeWalt with a 20” throat
![Page 8: Shaping a Simple Intarsia Rose](https://reader034.vdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022052214/586b88cf1a28ab42788b9742/html5/thumbnails/8.jpg)
After the piece is cut, the pattern is peeled off
![Page 9: Shaping a Simple Intarsia Rose](https://reader034.vdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022052214/586b88cf1a28ab42788b9742/html5/thumbnails/9.jpg)
The uncut part of the pattern is peeled and used on the next piece
![Page 10: Shaping a Simple Intarsia Rose](https://reader034.vdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022052214/586b88cf1a28ab42788b9742/html5/thumbnails/10.jpg)
The pattern is then transferred to the next piece of the project
![Page 11: Shaping a Simple Intarsia Rose](https://reader034.vdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022052214/586b88cf1a28ab42788b9742/html5/thumbnails/11.jpg)
Each piece is added to the project as cut
![Page 12: Shaping a Simple Intarsia Rose](https://reader034.vdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022052214/586b88cf1a28ab42788b9742/html5/thumbnails/12.jpg)
Cutting continues
![Page 13: Shaping a Simple Intarsia Rose](https://reader034.vdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022052214/586b88cf1a28ab42788b9742/html5/thumbnails/13.jpg)
Cutting continues
![Page 14: Shaping a Simple Intarsia Rose](https://reader034.vdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022052214/586b88cf1a28ab42788b9742/html5/thumbnails/14.jpg)
Project completely cut out
![Page 15: Shaping a Simple Intarsia Rose](https://reader034.vdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022052214/586b88cf1a28ab42788b9742/html5/thumbnails/15.jpg)
The glue residue is removed from the cut pieces
![Page 16: Shaping a Simple Intarsia Rose](https://reader034.vdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022052214/586b88cf1a28ab42788b9742/html5/thumbnails/16.jpg)
Project with the glue removed
![Page 17: Shaping a Simple Intarsia Rose](https://reader034.vdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022052214/586b88cf1a28ab42788b9742/html5/thumbnails/17.jpg)
Leaves are marked to lower them
![Page 18: Shaping a Simple Intarsia Rose](https://reader034.vdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022052214/586b88cf1a28ab42788b9742/html5/thumbnails/18.jpg)
The leaves are cut or sanded to achieve the desired thickness
![Page 19: Shaping a Simple Intarsia Rose](https://reader034.vdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022052214/586b88cf1a28ab42788b9742/html5/thumbnails/19.jpg)
Leaf thickness has been reduced to add depth to the project
![Page 20: Shaping a Simple Intarsia Rose](https://reader034.vdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022052214/586b88cf1a28ab42788b9742/html5/thumbnails/20.jpg)
First flower petal is being shaped by sloping from outside edge
![Page 21: Shaping a Simple Intarsia Rose](https://reader034.vdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022052214/586b88cf1a28ab42788b9742/html5/thumbnails/21.jpg)
This shaping adds depth to the flower.
![Page 22: Shaping a Simple Intarsia Rose](https://reader034.vdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022052214/586b88cf1a28ab42788b9742/html5/thumbnails/22.jpg)
Second Petal is shaped, again sloping from outside edge
![Page 23: Shaping a Simple Intarsia Rose](https://reader034.vdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022052214/586b88cf1a28ab42788b9742/html5/thumbnails/23.jpg)
The third piece is rounded to give outside curve .
![Page 24: Shaping a Simple Intarsia Rose](https://reader034.vdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022052214/586b88cf1a28ab42788b9742/html5/thumbnails/24.jpg)
This piece is rounded from the Left and only slightly on the right
![Page 25: Shaping a Simple Intarsia Rose](https://reader034.vdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022052214/586b88cf1a28ab42788b9742/html5/thumbnails/25.jpg)
Notice the third piece appears to tuck under the piece to its right
![Page 26: Shaping a Simple Intarsia Rose](https://reader034.vdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022052214/586b88cf1a28ab42788b9742/html5/thumbnails/26.jpg)
The fourth piece is marked so it will stay above the third piece
![Page 27: Shaping a Simple Intarsia Rose](https://reader034.vdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022052214/586b88cf1a28ab42788b9742/html5/thumbnails/27.jpg)
This piece cups outward on the bottom and inward on the top
![Page 28: Shaping a Simple Intarsia Rose](https://reader034.vdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022052214/586b88cf1a28ab42788b9742/html5/thumbnails/28.jpg)
The outward curved bottom forms the base of the rose
![Page 29: Shaping a Simple Intarsia Rose](https://reader034.vdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022052214/586b88cf1a28ab42788b9742/html5/thumbnails/29.jpg)
The inside curve on the top of the piece forms the back petal
![Page 30: Shaping a Simple Intarsia Rose](https://reader034.vdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022052214/586b88cf1a28ab42788b9742/html5/thumbnails/30.jpg)
The fifth petal is shaped again from the outside to the inside
![Page 31: Shaping a Simple Intarsia Rose](https://reader034.vdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022052214/586b88cf1a28ab42788b9742/html5/thumbnails/31.jpg)
Remember this petal is reversed from the first petal
![Page 32: Shaping a Simple Intarsia Rose](https://reader034.vdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022052214/586b88cf1a28ab42788b9742/html5/thumbnails/32.jpg)
The sixth petal forms the back of the rose center
![Page 33: Shaping a Simple Intarsia Rose](https://reader034.vdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022052214/586b88cf1a28ab42788b9742/html5/thumbnails/33.jpg)
It is again formed from the outside sloping to the inside
![Page 34: Shaping a Simple Intarsia Rose](https://reader034.vdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022052214/586b88cf1a28ab42788b9742/html5/thumbnails/34.jpg)
The seventh petal is formed the same way
![Page 35: Shaping a Simple Intarsia Rose](https://reader034.vdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022052214/586b88cf1a28ab42788b9742/html5/thumbnails/35.jpg)
The eighth petal follows suit
![Page 36: Shaping a Simple Intarsia Rose](https://reader034.vdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022052214/586b88cf1a28ab42788b9742/html5/thumbnails/36.jpg)
The ninth piece if formed the same way, but because of size
![Page 37: Shaping a Simple Intarsia Rose](https://reader034.vdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022052214/586b88cf1a28ab42788b9742/html5/thumbnails/37.jpg)
A dremmel tool is used to form the slope
![Page 38: Shaping a Simple Intarsia Rose](https://reader034.vdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022052214/586b88cf1a28ab42788b9742/html5/thumbnails/38.jpg)
Ninth petal in place
![Page 39: Shaping a Simple Intarsia Rose](https://reader034.vdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022052214/586b88cf1a28ab42788b9742/html5/thumbnails/39.jpg)
The center of the rose is rounded over to fit the petals around it
![Page 40: Shaping a Simple Intarsia Rose](https://reader034.vdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022052214/586b88cf1a28ab42788b9742/html5/thumbnails/40.jpg)
The bottom petal is marked to fit against the previous pieces
![Page 41: Shaping a Simple Intarsia Rose](https://reader034.vdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022052214/586b88cf1a28ab42788b9742/html5/thumbnails/41.jpg)
It is then shaped to slope outwards from the center
![Page 42: Shaping a Simple Intarsia Rose](https://reader034.vdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022052214/586b88cf1a28ab42788b9742/html5/thumbnails/42.jpg)
It shapes with a short round over on the bottom side to show a fall
![Page 43: Shaping a Simple Intarsia Rose](https://reader034.vdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022052214/586b88cf1a28ab42788b9742/html5/thumbnails/43.jpg)
A flap sander is used for final sanding and to soften edges
![Page 44: Shaping a Simple Intarsia Rose](https://reader034.vdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022052214/586b88cf1a28ab42788b9742/html5/thumbnails/44.jpg)
Each piece is finish sanded
![Page 45: Shaping a Simple Intarsia Rose](https://reader034.vdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022052214/586b88cf1a28ab42788b9742/html5/thumbnails/45.jpg)
Special care is used to soften the edges
![Page 46: Shaping a Simple Intarsia Rose](https://reader034.vdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022052214/586b88cf1a28ab42788b9742/html5/thumbnails/46.jpg)
The flap sander works well to follow the contour of the petals
![Page 47: Shaping a Simple Intarsia Rose](https://reader034.vdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022052214/586b88cf1a28ab42788b9742/html5/thumbnails/47.jpg)
The finish sanding on the flower is completed
![Page 48: Shaping a Simple Intarsia Rose](https://reader034.vdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022052214/586b88cf1a28ab42788b9742/html5/thumbnails/48.jpg)
A light pencil mark is made as a guide for wood burning the veins
![Page 49: Shaping a Simple Intarsia Rose](https://reader034.vdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022052214/586b88cf1a28ab42788b9742/html5/thumbnails/49.jpg)
The veins are wood burned to give more movement to the leaf
![Page 50: Shaping a Simple Intarsia Rose](https://reader034.vdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022052214/586b88cf1a28ab42788b9742/html5/thumbnails/50.jpg)
The rose is ready to glue
![Page 51: Shaping a Simple Intarsia Rose](https://reader034.vdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022052214/586b88cf1a28ab42788b9742/html5/thumbnails/51.jpg)
The outline of the project is marked on the backing board
![Page 52: Shaping a Simple Intarsia Rose](https://reader034.vdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022052214/586b88cf1a28ab42788b9742/html5/thumbnails/52.jpg)
It is then cut out
![Page 53: Shaping a Simple Intarsia Rose](https://reader034.vdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022052214/586b88cf1a28ab42788b9742/html5/thumbnails/53.jpg)
On the roses, we do not edge glue, we glue only the backing
![Page 54: Shaping a Simple Intarsia Rose](https://reader034.vdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022052214/586b88cf1a28ab42788b9742/html5/thumbnails/54.jpg)
A coat of glue shown on the backing
![Page 55: Shaping a Simple Intarsia Rose](https://reader034.vdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022052214/586b88cf1a28ab42788b9742/html5/thumbnails/55.jpg)
The flower is placed onto the backing
![Page 56: Shaping a Simple Intarsia Rose](https://reader034.vdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022052214/586b88cf1a28ab42788b9742/html5/thumbnails/56.jpg)
Care is taken to make sure each piece is down firm on the backing
![Page 57: Shaping a Simple Intarsia Rose](https://reader034.vdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022052214/586b88cf1a28ab42788b9742/html5/thumbnails/57.jpg)
After the glue is dry, the backing is trimmed and beveled
![Page 58: Shaping a Simple Intarsia Rose](https://reader034.vdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022052214/586b88cf1a28ab42788b9742/html5/thumbnails/58.jpg)
We use Bartley Gel Varnish to finish our products
![Page 59: Shaping a Simple Intarsia Rose](https://reader034.vdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022052214/586b88cf1a28ab42788b9742/html5/thumbnails/59.jpg)
We find the paper rags are best for us they are cheap and lint
free
![Page 60: Shaping a Simple Intarsia Rose](https://reader034.vdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022052214/586b88cf1a28ab42788b9742/html5/thumbnails/60.jpg)
We apply the varnish with a brush starting on the edge
![Page 61: Shaping a Simple Intarsia Rose](https://reader034.vdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022052214/586b88cf1a28ab42788b9742/html5/thumbnails/61.jpg)
The varnish is worked down into the rose to get complete coverage
![Page 62: Shaping a Simple Intarsia Rose](https://reader034.vdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022052214/586b88cf1a28ab42788b9742/html5/thumbnails/62.jpg)
We then wipe the gel off of the surface
![Page 63: Shaping a Simple Intarsia Rose](https://reader034.vdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022052214/586b88cf1a28ab42788b9742/html5/thumbnails/63.jpg)
Low air pressure melts the varnish that collects in cracks
![Page 64: Shaping a Simple Intarsia Rose](https://reader034.vdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022052214/586b88cf1a28ab42788b9742/html5/thumbnails/64.jpg)
The rose is complete
