DEAR FRIENDS AND FAMILIES,

I hope you will take a moment to flip through these pages, and celebrate the many activities of Savio students and faculty this past school year. It’s a joy to watch great teachers and enthusiastic kids as they work together through challenges and successes. I am very proud of the work that has been done by them.

It’s also been a great year of support by our families and friends. Parent volunteers supported everything from retreats to art, math and robotics, not to mention athletics, theatre, science and music. Our HSA and Booster Club members were busy planning and supporting many school events. In addition, we enjoyed a large increase in funds raised for the annual Build the Nest appeal and the Soiree Fund-A-Need. On top of that, our community fully funded a project to add four additional modular classrooms that are under construction as I write this.

We have successfully navigated the implementation of a new governance model, created new Board bylaws, and collaborated to share resources and knowledge with one another. We appreciate everyone’s cooperation as we adopted Ren Web, the school’s new software management system, and strived to improve our fiscal accountability in finance and development. It was a full year full of excitement, and we are grateful for everyone’s sincere efforts on our behalf.

I am pleased to have served St. Dominic Savio as Principal in our fifth year as a school. In May, we successfully graduated 73 young men and women who will now go out into the wider community as “Servant Leaders in the Image of Christ.” It is our continuing goal to provide a quality Catholic education experience to our students and families in the coming years. The administration strives to work with the faculty, staff, parents, and students to develop and strengthen our academic programs, to deepen

faith formation through liturgy, service and retreats, and to provide outstanding extracurricular and leadership opportunities. We have accomplished a tremendous

amount as a growing school, from championships in athletics, fine arts, and robotics to national academic award recognition, to the service provided to

others. Thank you to all in our community who continue to make Savio a great Catholic high school for our young men and women.

SAVIO GRADUATES ENTERthe ConventSt. Dominic Savio was overjoyed to announce that two of our graduating seniors, Robyn Aanstoos and Ava Lynk, have been accepted for entrance to the postulancy (the first stage of formation), of the Dominican Sisters of Mary, Mother of the Eucharist, in Ann Arbor, Michigan. The Dominican Sisters of Mary, who have teaching missions throughout the U.S., have been serving in the Diocese of Austin since 2009, and are in the process of establishing a permanent presence here, as they seek to build a large priory in Georgetown. The Sisters have been teaching at Savio since the school opened in 2009, and Robyn and Ava will be the first St. Dominic Savio Catholic High School students to enter.

St Dominic Savio’s Principal,

Morgan Daniels, is proud to announce the Class of 2014’s highest ranking seniors, Kelly Bowen and Daniel Parrella. Kelly Bowen is the class Valedictorian and will be attending Johns Hopkins University in the fall. Daniel Parrella is the class Salutatorian and will be attending the University of Oklahoma.

THE IRON EAGLES ROBOTICS TEAMS ARE AN AMAZING GROUP OF STUDENTS AND ADULT MENTORS!

They had an incredible season during the 2013-2014 school year! Only ten teams in Texas advanced to the World Championships and St. Dominic Savio became the only school in Texas to advance two teams, “Optimus” and “Prime.”

At the World Championships, held in St. Louis, both teams competed well with “Prime” going undefeated on the second day. ”Optimus “ advanced to the finals and although they fell short, they finished as the highest ranking team in the state of Texas.

As a finalist, “Optimus” ended their season as a member of one of the top four alliances (12 total teams) in the world!

Iron EaglesAmaze

In April, the junior class at St. Dominic Savio went on a retreat that was very different than others experienced by students. For about 20 hours of the retreat, students listened to, visited with, and learned from, the homeless living on the streets in downtown Austin. This “Retreat on the Street” was an amazing experi-ence for the students and chaperones. Several deacons, a priest, associates from Mobile Loaves and Fishes, and a number of parents accompanied the students as they spent time eating and talking with our brothers and sisters on the street. Many of the juniors described their experience as, “one of the most powerful things I have done.”

St. Dominic Savio is partnering with Play Like A Champion Today (PLACT) in bringing its coach clinic and parent workshop to our school community. University of Notre Dame PLACT Program Director and former Notre Dame Cheerleader, Kristin Sheehan, ND ’90, ’93 will join athletic directors, Crystal Clark and Orlando Florez at Savio to conduct the trainings. Savio will become the first Austin-area high school to partner with PLACT. Several local grade schools already embrace the initiative. PLACT workshops are nationally accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Coaching Education. The initiative enjoys partnership with 30 Catholic dioceses and exists in over 40 cities across the U.S. and Canada. PLACT has educated over 50,000 coaches and 20,000 parents who in turn have impacted the lives of over a million athletes.

“If Catholic-sponsored sports programs are going to achieve their full-potential as envisioned by Pope John Paul II, Catholic schools and dioceses are going to have to invest in preparing coaches and sport parents to understand sports in a holistic perspective in teaching athletes the cardinal virtues of prudence, justice, fortitude and temperance directly through their sport experience,” says Kristin Sheehan, PLACT Program Director.

Savio Athletic Director Crystal Clark agrees, “More than half our students are involved in sports here at Savio. I am looking forward to implementing the PLACT program because it is all about building character through participation in sports and aligns perfectly with our school's mission, vision and philosophy of developing our students in all aspects of their lives.”

Music Department NotesA SUCCESS IN 2013-2014! The instrumental, string, and vocal departments competed at the TAPPS regional competitions. All of the large ensembles received 1st division ratings in both performance and sight reading at the regional level. All large ensembles moved forward to the TAPPS State competitions. At the regional level, Savio had 37 soloists receive 1st division ratings and five small ensembles receive a 1st division rating and move forward to state the competitions. At the state competition, both our string orchestra and wind ensemble received 1st division ratings in both performance and sight reading receiving a sweepstakes plaque. Additionally our jazz band, Savio combo, advanced percussion ensemble, show choir, men’s choir, women’s choir, and sacred choir all took 1st division ratings in performance. We had 20 soloists receive 1st division ratings and 3 small ensembles take 1st division ratings at the state competitions. Overall, the vocal department took 4th place in the state at the TAPPS music competitions. The instrumental/string department claimed the TAPPS state championship again, now four years in a row! The music department also competed at the Director’s Choice music competitions in Dallas, where the symphony orchestra received a rating of excellent and the choir program received a rating of superior and runner-up in class. We are so very proud of our students!

In addition, the theatre program performed Where the Lilies Bloom for the fall One Act Play and competed at the TAPPS Regional competitions. The theatre department also performed Bye Bye Birdie for the spring musical. Both were a huge success!

Savio cuts FOR CANCER

Our Savio cheerleaders were examples of spirit and service both on and off of the field this year. At the Homecoming pep rally, a total of 62 women gave selflessly by donating eight inches of their hair to the American Cancer Society/Pantene's Beautiful Lengths. Inspired by a personal story from one of the cheerleaders, the crowd saw a tearful reunion with our own cheerleader and a friend whose mom lost the battle with cancer. Parents, staff, teachers, and members of the community gathered at this event to show their support.

During the year, the Savio cheerleaders went on to win a National Award by UCA (Universal Cheerleaders Associa-tion), the American School Spirit Award, Judges Favorite and Charity Award. "When choosing a winner UCA looks for teams that exemplify community service, outstanding athletic support, spirit raising activities, and high academic standards." They won the Charity Award in which Savio Cuts for Cancer was highlighted.
