You’re not going to get this type of intelligence without having an in depth knowledge of their industry, this is why you need to take the time and get plugged into industry related blogs, LinkedIn groups, and news sources.

• Another way to get information is to actually go to the client or prospect site and hang out for a day or two and just watch the workflows. You’ll see immediate areas for improvement, I assure you. One tip to keep in mind while doing your initial analysis, is NOT to make any individual or department look bad during the process. There are ways to get your point across without burying someone in the process.

• I’m not talking about walking in and saying, “You currently pay $10,000 per month, and I’m going to cut your cost to $5,000 per month.” This is non-sense and will take your business profit levels and sink them to nothing. What I’m talking about is increasing productivity for the client by having them invest in technology. Yes, in some cases this is going to cost the client more money in the short run, but in the long run, it’s going to save the client a lot more money.
