MEMBERSHIP

Please be thinking of ways to help our chapter attract new members. We will be attending workshops at national conference addressing this issue and hope to come back with many new ideas. You can help by telling friends and neighbors what a great chapter we have. Invite them to a meeting and put them on your Christmas Tree Luncheon list – let’s meet a goal of ten new members this year. We already have five great new members, so we’re half way there!

We always have new member packets available and ready to send. Just give us a call! Anne & Darelene

CHAPTER NAME BADGES A few members have expressed the need for a new name badge. We will be sending a new order in immediately following the October meeting. Please let me know if you would also like to order one. The cost is $10. Anne Neish [email protected] 949-493-5481

PHILANTHROPY IN REVIEW

Operation School Bell’s first event of the year was held on Wednesday, September 20 at Target North. We clothed ninety excited children that evening. With the help of some wonderful volunteers, eleven members, five Assisteens, and one Assisteen mom, Operation School Bell was successfully completed.

Our next clothing event is scheduled for October 4 and all volunteer spots are full. Sign up sheets will be available at the October regular meeting for our third event scheduled for the evening of October 25, at Target North.

Teen Spree has scheduled two dates: Wed., Sept., 27th/no sign ups needed and Wed., Oct.

11th/sign-up sheet will be available at the October regular meeting.

Links to Learning is looking for one member to join their team. The member must be available for the Oct. 31

st meeting, and prior to the meeting available to review the paperwork

assigned. Please contact Kathy Thomas or Marie Thomas for questions, or more information. Adopt-a-Family will be participating in a Christmas only event again this year. Shopping will be done at Stater Bros., and a sign-up sheet will be at the October regular meeting. Support Literacy will be starting soon, and sign-ups will be needed to fill open spots in four classrooms at Santiago Elementary, occurring every other week. Legacy for Literacy is the new “Make a Difference” program. We will be collecting books immediately through January/early February for the preschool at Camp Pendleton. New and/or “gently used” books appropriate for preschool ages. A collection box will be on site in the back office.

LINKS TO LEARNING We have initiated our annual Links to Learning program to grant teachers money to purchase supplies and equipment not available through the District. We sent grant applications to all educators in Saddleback Valley School district. Application proposals are due back to us on October 11. Our committee will meet on October 31 to determine the winners. Winning proposals will be announced by mid-November. The check presentation ceremony will be January 12, 2018. All Assistance League members are invited to attend so be sure to put it on your calendar. We would like to add another member to our committee. Some email and attachment experience is helpful. RESOURCE DEVELOPMENT

CHRISTMAS TREE LUNCHEON NEWS . . . We have mailed our Christmas Tree Luncheon Save the Date postcards and now our deadline is fast approaching for our actual invitation mailing on October 13 for our 29th Annual Christmas Tree Luncheon on Sunday, December 10 - it will happen in 11 short weeks!!

As always our goal is to increase attendance - is there just one more name I can add to your list? If you don't have a list on file that we will mail to, can you think of any-one you might like to ask to attend?

I have been making additions and changes to many of your lists as they have been sent to me and I will continue to do so up to the moment of label printing.

Please continue to keep this singular fund raising annual effort to raise the funds necessary to accomplish our mission in mind. Let's make this our best event ev-er.

TIMELESS TREASURES

This year at our Christmas Tree Luncheon we will have a table of "treasures" donated by members. This could include silver, crystal and/or jewelry. This is a first ever category of auction items it should be interesting and hopefully profitable for our fundraiser. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact either Kathie Kopkash or Deanna Jones who are heading up this new concept and will be available to assist you with your donations. We ask that you send a photo of the intended donation to either [email protected] or [email protected] to see if it is an item(s) that fits in with our criteria. It would be the responsibility of the donor to find the present day value of your donations. Please note that the donation forms for Timeless Treasures are GREEN.. So if you have items that you can no longer use but you think would go great at auction, please consider making a donation. Note, this is in addition to your required $50.00 donation for CTL.

EDUCATION

BOARD POSITION Let us educate you on the position of Education Chairman. As the Education Chairman you would serve as the chapter coordinator for the National Circle Fund Campaign which consists of collecting from members who want to donate and forwarding the forms along with payment to the National office. You would give members their Circle Pin. Also keep the "Wall of Fame" updated with members names. The Education position also serves as coordinator of the Annual Conference for our Chapter. The next Conference will be held in 2019. This consists of having a sign-up sheet for interested members and confirming conference attendees the month of June. You would then register attendees with the National Office along with the Treasurer who would pay for the registrations. The fun part would be looking for restaurants in the host city and making reservations for the free nights. You would also keep attendees updated and informed as to Conference schedules. The Education Chairman is a member of the Strategic Planning, Bylaws and Membership Committees. Please keep in mind that this position will be open if you are interested when the nominating committee meets. Submitted by: Kathie Kopkash

CIRCLE FUND: Chapter members continue to support our National Organization by contributing to the Circle Fund. At this point we have 35 members contributing. Since last newsletter the following members have added their name to our Wall of Fame by making a donation.

ASSISTEENS PHILANTHROPY—LOAVES AND FISHES The Assisteens of Saddleback Valley bids a fond farewell to Loaves and Fishes in Santa Ana after a nearly 4 year partnership. The girls of Assisteens provided crafts and activities for the children at the center every month. Director Maria Dzida stated, “The Assisteens have been faithfully coming in and bringing wonderful crafts and we will be forever grateful.” In addition to the crafts the girls distributed food, clothing, and school supplies during their last visit on August 26th.

ALSV ATTENDS NATIONAL CONFERENCE: Fourteen of our Chapter members went to San Francisco for the National Conference September 17-20th. Besides cementing friendships with members of chapters throughout the country we had a lot to learn at the many educational sessions. The Keynote speakers gave us inspiration besides knowledge. This insightful information will be shared with our membership during the next couple of months. Of course, there was some time for fun. Enjoy our photos of good times.

MEMBER NEWS:

My son and I just returned from a 3 week road trip. We traveled in his motor home. Wonderful way to see these beautiful United States. One of our adventures was witnessing the eclipse in Casper Wyoming. It was awesome. Went as Far East as Minnesota. Attended the Minnesota state fair and had delicious Walleye fish. Traveled through So Dakota. What a beautiful state. Black Hills, Custer St Park and Crazy horse.

Wish everyone could have a chance to witness all the beauty I did. Joyce Stewart
