Long time political and community activist Tim Correa took over ownership of the theatre in 1973

and has been managing the venue ever since. In its heyday, the Aztlan Theatre hosted major acts such as Slayer, Red Hot Chili Peppers and Run DMC.

Denver, Co based Tangaroo Entertainment has worked hard to bring together the Denver music community for a charitable benefit concert to help the Aztlan Theatre raise money and help to revitalize its musical heritage. !

Following, several bands share the reason why they have generously donated their time to this important cause and believe it’s important to help restore this historic landmark.

There are a lot of places in Denver that call themselves music venues because they allow bands to play. And it’s great that they do exist. But a lot of them aren’t actual concert venues, they’re bars or restaurants where the band sets up in a corner of the room after some tables are pushed aside. So we want to do anything we can to keep the historic Aztlan Theatre open and functioning, to support the “concert” experience rather than the “bar-gig” experience.

The Aztlan Theatre is a historic place in Denver that has brought lots of happy memories and good times to many people over the years. When we heard about the situation, we definitely wanted to be a part of this. An important thing about being a musician is paying homage and respect to the places, things, and people that have allowed us to get to the point that we are at now, and not taking these types of things for granted. We want people to have a good time, see some good live music, and to come and support an important venue in the Denver music scene.

The music scene is a community and the only way for it to progress is through helping one another out. Aspen Hourglass was incredibly bummed we had prior commitments to this event as we believe it is a duty of musicians to help out local businesses regardless if they are in trouble or not.

Live music needs venues like The Aztlan Theatre Bar! Not only are they a part of Colorado Historical Community but a great venue for bands to perform on a big stage.. it's the look and feel of the way music should be heard. Save The Aztlan Theatre Bar and you're saving a part of our culture!

Concrete Effect

As musicians, we spend a great amount of time and effort promoting our art and preaching about keeping the 'scene' alive. It is our responsibility and moral obligation to recognize the venues, promoters, etc. who make the 'scene' possible, and should we be called upon to help those who have believed in our craft and enabled our creativity, we must rise to the occasion without question or pause.

KUNUNDRUM

As a band that primarily uses our music for activism and to bring greater awareness to local and global causes we immediately recognized the importance of being involved in this mission. After learning about the Aztlan founder's background in political and community activism, it further affirmed our natural connection and responsibility to both our ancestors + future generations. It is critical that we all help in carrying the vision of pioneers like Aztlan founder Tim Correa who selflessly fought for decades to provide a platform and exposure for musicians and creatives like us.

I've seen a few great shows at the Aztlan and played there once. I feel it's a great venue with alot of potential. It would sadden me to see it rolled over for another Walmart.

Music venues are the links of a chain, if one link falls then there's a separation in the framework that is musical entertainment. Thus we all unite as musicians to keep this link solid and strong.
