FROM THE DON’S DESK

Director of Nursing (DON)

Jo Costuna-Temple

Hello everyone!

Today it snowed at Jindalee as I began to write the September edition of the “Jindajabber”. With the first day of Spring on Friday, what a great way to finish our winter off. Goodness knows there have been some cold nights in the last couple of months!

A warm welcome is extended to all of our new residents, staff, families and visitors to Jindalee. Please pop in and see us if you would like to chat or have any queries or concerns. There is always someone here to help.

Welcome back to Rosemary Vagi after some extended leave overseas. We hope you had a wonderful time and are nicely rested. Head Office staff visited last week and took some time catching up with residents and staff. The plans for continued refurbishment are well underway. We will let you know of a start day when scheduled in the diary!

Kind Regards,

Jo, Pam & Chris (Director & Deputy Directors of Nursing)

What a fabulous job the Health and Leisure Team did to organise and present “Cruise Week” to the people of Jindalee Aged Care Residence. The costumes were great and all the activities that replicate a holiday on a cruise ship were available right down to the “Captain’s Cocktail Party”. We received such wonderful feedback. The Bush Lounge was turned into the inside of a passenger liner with “wonderful” views out to sea. The staff acted out their specific roles depending upon who they were and what costume they wore. We put absolute faith in the running of the ship under Captain Richard Cummins. It may well be an annual celebration from now on.

The restaurant outings continue to be a great success also. Thank you to those staff that assist getting people safely to the venues and ensure a lovely meal and an enjoyable outing is had by all.

The Influenza A outbreak was terrible. The closure of the facility is understandably very difficult and we can only urge people to PLEASE not visit if you have any signs and symptoms of an illness. There can be serious consequences to the health and wellbeing of Jindalee resi-dents, staff and their combined family members.

The Dental Bus leaves our premises this week. It was such a good outcome for a significant amount of residents to be able to access dental care onsite.

Time to sign off and wish you all a safe and happy couple of months until the next Jindajabber.

The photos from “Cruise Week” demonstrate the fun and excitement of this occasion more than words are able to express . It is such a joy for staff, family and friends to see the residents having the opportunity to remember past holiday experiences and create new memories.

During September and October, the residents will have a chance to attend “Floriade ”on a bus trip. The residents always enjoy this event, especially if the weather has been kind and the blooms are at their best.

On Wednesday 27th September at 2:00pm in the Bush Lounge, we will be having a clothing display from “Lowes”. This is a special service where there are clothes especially tailored for residents in the aged population. Residents and relatives can view clothes and order with delivery within 10 days. We provided this service 3 months ago and it was a huge success.

We have the annual “YMCA Sports Carnival” on 19th October. Over the coming weeks residents will be training for the big event with students from the University of Canberra.

There is also a trip to Goulburn in the planning stages. It will be a day outing including lunch. This will take place on the 15th November. Please consider joining us on this day if possible. Posters will be put up closer to the date when we have more details

Hoping you get the chance to enjoy some sunshine. Till next edition

Welcome to this edition of Jindajabber.

We have had a very busy time over the last few weeks, as the photos throughout our newsletter will show.

Unfortunately, for some weeks we were confined to activities on the wing. Movie afternoons, exercises, coffee afternoons and a variety of other projects took place in each area.

Seniors Lunch

During July a group of residents attended the Seniors Centre in Turner for a special “Christmas in July” lunch.

Those who attended were very impressed with the menu, which featured traditional Christmas fare. The decorations were beautiful and added to the festival feel of the occasion.

MONTHS IN REVIEW

Woden Senior Singers

On the 6th July we were entertained by the Woden Senior Choir, which is always a treat.

Each time they visit they have a theme and always perform in a very profession and entertaining manner.

The residents enjoy the music so much and like to socialize with the singers after the performance.

Page 5

Music at Midday

Music at Midday is an event which many residents look forward to attending.

Held at The Canberra Theatre, this months programme featured an Abba tribute, as well as some of the more traditional band music.

Canberra Symphony Orchestra

A string quintet also visited during August from the Canberra Symphony Orchestra. It was wonderful to hear the classical music played with such precision. We were treated to yet another Abba tribute. It was fabulous!

Page 6

Cruise Week : Sail Away Party

On Monday afternoon the 14th August we held a “Sail Away Party” for the residents boarding for a week of fun activities.

At the sail away party residents receive a boarding pass and programme of the weeks activities.

We also have drinks and finger food as we set sail with streamers and party poppers setting the atmosphere.

CRUISE WEEK

Page 7

Cruise Week– Cruise Games Captain’s Cocktail Party

On Wednesday 16th August in the afternoon we had cruise style games. Jindalee residents can get very competitive! The afternoon was enjoyed by all. This was then followed by the Captain’s Cocktail Party. Residents were able to get close to “Captain Richard” for a photo opportunity and enjoy some canapés and ‘mocktails’.

The afternoon also included listening to some live entertainment, John on the Guitar, playing requests.

Page 8

Page 9

Cruise week Cappuccino Morning

Thursday morning we enjoyed some pastries and savouries

with a cup or two of coffee or tea.

Tropical music was played.

Even some family members hopped on board for this event.

Page 10

Cruise Week Big Cruise Bingo

On Thursday afternoon it was time for our weekly bingo game.

Cruising means we have bingo on the ship , with some great prizes and lots of

fun and laughter.

We had so many residents at bingo we even ran out of tokens, and had to

quickly create some more !

Page 11

Cruise Week Happy Hour

Yes, the cruise must end but sailing into Sydney Harbour is always something to look forward to.

Another chance for delicious food and drink, fun photo opportunities and entertainment.

PRAISE AND COMPLAINTS

BY

RESIDENTS OR THEIR RELATIVES

At Jindalee Aged Care Residence, we aim to provide the highest quality of care to our resi-

dents. To assist us to continually improve our service, we welcome feedback and suggestions

for improvement from residents and their relatives. Suggestions are considered by the staff at

the Resident’s Care Committee Meeting where they are discussed. We investigate all

complaints and aim to resolve issues quickly and effectively.

Praise and concerns can be informal or formal, and anonymous if that is your desire.

Most issues can be dealt with informally. If you have an issue please ask to speak to the

person in charge of the wing. The issue may easily be dealt with in a simple conversation.

Jindalee has a Praise and Complaint Form that is available, providing a more formal method of

offering praise or concern. There is an option of remaining anonymous however it is difficult to

give feedback if we do not know who is raising the concern.

Once a Praise and Complaint Form has been completed, it can be handed to the nurse,

placed in the suggestion box in the foyer or posted to Jindalee.

The Director of Nursing (DON) or delegates review all the forms. They investigate the cause

of the concern, with a focus on whether Jindalee’s Policy and Procedures are contributing

factors and takes appropriate action to rectify any issues. Feedback is then available to the

complainant (if not anonymous).

All completed forms are kept in a folder in the Educator’s Office.

External support groups can also offer assistance
