2020 Diaconate Discernment Sessions – Beginning this September, our diocesan Diaconate Office will offer a series of discernment sessions for those men who are considering a calling to ministry as a permanent dea-con. These sessions are required preparation for, and an integral part of, the application and evaluation process which will occur during the first half of the following year. Before participating in the discernment sessions, inquirers will meet with the director of the pro-gram to learn about the discernment process, the requirements of the formation program, and the ministry of the deacon. Pastors, if you have men in your parish who you believe may have a calling to service as a deacon, please ask them to contact Sue Huertas in the Diaconate Office: (727) 341-6826 or by email: [email protected]. A letter will also be sent to all pastors by mail later this year.

Jesus came and stood in their midst and said to them, 'Peace be with you.'" Then, he said it again. And then, "he breathed on them and said to them, 'Receive the Holy Spirit.'" Jesus brings peace, and he brings the Holy Spirit. Peace, in fact, is one of the fruits of the Holy Spirit. Today, on this feast of Pentecost, we remember the dramatic outpouring of the Holy Spirit that came upon those first apostles and the peace that came along with it. But we do more than remember. We also celebrate the presence of this same Spirit in our midst.

Through the sacrament of baptism, every Christian receives the indwelling presence of the Holy Spirit in his or her soul. Thus, the gift of peace is already ours! The question is whether or not we have really begun to appreciate and utilize this most precious gift. Like the apostles who had locked themselves up "for fear of the Jews," we too are capable of imprisoning ourselves in our own anxieties. We fret and worry about the future, about our sufferings or our disappointments, and too often let these con-cerns stifle the true peace that Jesus offers us.

But the Church today urges us to rejoice and to step out in faith like the apostles who left their fears behind them. Peace not only alleviates our fears, it also frees us to live our faith to the fullest, to have the courage to take risks, and to leave our comfort zone for the sake of the Gospel. This is what we are called and, not only that, empowered to do. Anything less is a kind of spiritual poverty we bring upon ourselves. God has given us the gift of himself, present and available in every moment, every place, and every situation. May we recognize this most wonderful gift and give thanks with grateful hearts.

“To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good.” 1 CORINTHIANS 12:7

To receive the gift of the Holy Spirit you must open your heart

and let Him in! Open your heart and be grateful for all the gifts

God has given us. Regardless of your circumstance, God has

given us all blessings. What we do with those gifts is our gift

back to God. Generously sharing our gifts keeps us more

“God-centered” and less “self-centered”.

Welcome Holy Spirit— Bienvenido Espiritu Santo!!

WHY DO WE DO THAT? CATHOLIC LIFE EXPLAINED

Question: Why do we celebrate Pentecost ? Answer: The book of Acts unpacks the events immediately following Jesus' ascension into heaven. The Apostles and other disciples were told to pray in Jerusalem and await another outpouring of the Holy Spirit. As the weeks ticked on, the Jewish Festival of Weeks approached. This festival took place 50 days after Passover and celebrated the giving of the law on Mount Sinai. The Festival of Weeks (or "Pentecost" in Greek) was a great pilgrimage feast, with Jews from all over the ancient world convening on Jerusalem for the celebration. It was on Pentecost that God chose to send the Holy Spirit. Here, the new law of love was etched into the hearts of the disciples. As he burst out onto the balcony above the multinational crowd, Peter proclaimed the message of the resurrection, and the Holy Spirit enabled every listener to hear in their native language. 3,000 peo-ple were baptized that day! The disciples - and every baptized person - receives the gifts and zeal necessary to bring a new mes-sage of salvation to the people of God.

Music Ministry Many of our music ministry groups have begun rehearsals in full swing. Here’s some quick info: Children’s Choir (ages 5-11) meets on Tuesday evenings at 5:30pm in the music room which is located in the large portable directly behind Rosary Hall. Junior Choir (11 and up), also meets on Tuesday evenings at 6:20pm. 9:30 choir meets on Thursday evenings at 7pm in the Music Room and sings each week at 9:30am Mass. 11:30 choir meets on Wednesday evenings at 7pm in the Mu-sic Room and sings each week at 11:30am Mass. Both these groups are always in need more singers, men and women. No previous choral experience required, although it is very helpful. Music reading a plus. Our Resurrection Choir sings for funerals and is open to new members. We meet a half-hour before each funeral. No previ-ous experience necessary. If you are interested in this, you can call the parish office and leave me a message, or e-mail me at [email protected]. If you are interested in joining the Spanish Music Ministry or the Life Teen Band, please feel free to visit the following link to find out how to get involved: https://ladyrosary.org/music We have a great and vibrant music ministry which helps God’s faith-ful give praise and worship and grow in their faith. We can use your help to continue to make it the joyful noise that it is. PEACE

Sunday Gospel Reflection by Bishop Parkes Sunday, May 31, 2020 – Pentecost Sunday

Going Forth with the Holy Spirit

Have you ever been asked to do something that you didn’t feel prepared to do? Maybe it was something at work, like being asked to lead a team on an important project. Maybe it was when you found out you were having your first child. Perhaps it was when you were called into a diffi-cult situation to bring words of comfort and com-passion. I know I’ve experienced that feeling dur-ing my years as a priest and now a bishop. What do you do when you feel inadequate to tackle the task at hand? This weekend the church celebrates Pentecost, the birthday of the Church, which marks the end of the Easter Season. It’s now 50 days after the resurrection. Despite all they witnessed while in the presence of Jesus, the disciples still had questions...not so much as to who Jesus was, but what they were to do next after he ascended to the Father. In future scriptures we read that Jesus tells them to go to the ends of the earth, proclaiming the good news and baptizing all in the name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. They no doubt questioned if they had what it would take to do so. Could they do it? Did they have the courage to do it? Those questions may also be in your heart today. This same command-ment Jesus gave applies to you and me. Do you have the courage to stand for truth, to love our enemies, to persevere when things seem difficult or impossible, to lead others to know Jesus Christ?

Jesus sent us the Holy Spirit, the Paraclete, to give us that courage. It is our vision today in the Diocese of St Petersburg to courageously live the Gospel: to proclaim, invite, and encounter. Empowered by the Holy Spir-it, may we emerge from this pandemic and go forth in our circles to pro-

claim, invite and encounter Christ in our own lives and to invite others to do the same.

The Catholic Church encourages the

“practice of merciful love,” offering as a guide the corporal works of mercy, charita-

ble acts for the common good and basic human welfare. These actions are rooted in our love for the Lord, and as Jesus tells us, knowing that whatever we do for the most vulnerable among us we do for Him. Pantry Hours: Thursday & Friday 9— 11:30 am For assistance Contact (813)949-6094

Non perishable Food donations can be dropped off at the parish office Monday—Friday from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm. Thank you for your generosity!

MAKING A SPIRITUAL COMMUNION BY FATHER RON AUBIN

If for whatever reason, you are not able to attend Mass and receive Jesus in Holy Communion, then I encourage you to make a spiritual communion, or better yet, make your entire day a spiritual communion with Jesus. There are several web sites, listed below, that explain how to do just that. But my favorite prayer for maintaining a spiritual communion with Jesus is the Prayer of Saint Patrick, also known as the Breastplate of Saint Patrick: https://www.ourcatholicprayers.com/st-atricksbreastplate.html I’ve adapted this prayer to suit my own spiritual needs and my version goes something like this:

Christ be with me, within in me, before me, behind me, beneath me, above me.

Christ be on my right, and on my left. Christ be in my heart, in my mind, in my soul, and in every fiber of my

being. Christ be in my thoughts, in my words, and in my actions.

Christ be in my eyes (what I see), my ears (what I hear), on my lips (what I say),

in my hands (what I do) and in my feet (where I go). Christ be in my sleeping, in my waking, and in all my doing.

I love Jesus, be with me today, that I might be with you forever.

ARE YOU REGISTERED ?

Did you know that demographic studies estimate that more than 1/3 of all Catholics are not registered in a parish? Although you may attend Mass on a regular basis, unless we have a registration form our records will not show you as a registered member. Please encourage your friends and family to register. Registering is important because: If a parish doesn’t know who is out there, how can it ade-quately serve the needs of all– especially singles, divorced or young families who may not see the need to register. Registered parishioners receive helpful information about the parish. Registration is needed to obtain Baptism/ Confirmation sponsor form. Registering is easy. Registration forms are available in the parish office, the welcome center and on the parish website.

It has been a rocky road we’ve all traveled these past 2 months. However, Our Lady of the Ro-sary is blessed with many very generous parish-ioners. We truly thank all those who gave above and beyond their normal offertories—and there were many of you who gave an extra $1, 2 even $10,000 to help us. Fr Ron was able to bring most staff back because of your generous re-sponse and we thank you. All our bills can be paid. We don’t know what the future will bring, but we know we will get through it with you and Our Lord Jesus! Thank you once again for your generous support of Stewardship at OLOR!
