“THE HAIR OF THE DOG”---SAFARI SURF AND SPORT------WINTER 2011 HOLY SMOKES ! Nothing cures a hangover like a meet at Randy Beck’s SAFARI SURF SHOP. First, Randy gently starts

you off with hot coffee, tea, and comfort rolls at 5:30 A.M…..Second, he wallops you with a “red hot/high volume”

surf band called “CHUM” around 8:00 A.M…..Third, around 9:30 AM, he has a mobile “New York Style Pizza” rig pull

into the lot and fire up its’ oven……And then, despite being in the “Ever Sunny San Fernando Valley”, Randy orders

up an un-announced heavy downpour at 10:15 A.M. and you get to eat your deliciously hot pepperoni slice whilst

shivering in the rain…..BING BANG BOOM---HANGOVER IS GONE !

Yep, that’s how it went down. Some packed up at that point and went home. Many huddled in the back of the shop

and went thru Randy Beck’s (40 or so) vintage board stash. After an hour long deluge, the sun popped out and it

actually got nice again. There was a lot of excitement at this meet because of Randy Rarick’s presence. Multiple

members individually walked Rarick into the parking lot to privately show him their potential auction piece. A

cherry surf bus showed up and wowed the crowd. Burke Large caused a stir when he came in with a gorgeous, near

11’, early 60’s Greg Noll, and no, it wasn’t a tandem. We were honored when Robert F. Millner of “Roberts

Surfboards of Playa Del Rey” arrived. Robert laughed when someone asked him “who was your glasser?” he replied

“I was my glasser”. His big smile and positive vibe were hard to miss. Steve Morris of Woodland Hills made several

folks happy with what he brought for sale. We were happy to see Mike Jipp, all the way down from Oregon. We had

some ruffians come all the way up from San Deigo/Escondido way. My pick for “Wickedest Board of the Meet

Award” goes to Mark Woodrome and his scarlet Plastic Fantastic. A few of us hung out until after 2:00 P.M., hoping

Mr. Beck would break out a keg, but no such luck !

Special thanks to--- Red Ball Rock & Roll Pizza, “CHUM”, and “The Heroic Max Knapp”

SAFARI SURF & RANDY BECK, YOU MURDERED IT !!! THANK YOU FROM THE LBCC !!!

!!!!! UPCOMING EVENT !!!!!

SATURDAY, MARCH 26---HUNTINGTON BEACHCRUISER CAR SHOW Here is what you need to know;

From PCH, pull into the lot on the north side of the pier. Head down to the lowest parking tier and turn left. You will come to a table staffed by “BeachCruiser” folks. Give

these folks your best smile and tell them you’re with the Longboard Collector Club. They will wave you up thru into our “meet area”.

a. When you arrive at the “meet area”, give Mel or Megan $5 for your “2 Day Parking Pass” AND if you’re displaying, a $5.00 “display fee”. We have a lot more space than last year and the club is being charged for this extra space. Thus, the new “display fee”.

b. Consult with Mel or myself, as to where you should unload/set up. Be flexible as to placement. Every spot is a good one at this event.

c. Quickly unload, and move your vehicle out of the MEET AREA as quickly as possible. Please, do not set up and then go park. Please park your vehicle in the far northern end of the lot. The BeachCruiser organizers will be looking to see that we are densely parked at the Northern end of the lot where you first pulled in off of PCH.

d. When setting up your display, please keep in mind that later arriving club members will be setting up; in front of you, on the side of you, and sometimes behind you. We will be wall to wall even though we have the extra space.

e. Please be accommodating to our “late arrivals”. Make room. Help “create” them a space.

f. For those who are coming back on Sunday, you’ll be allowed to set up in Pier Plaza for the day. Last year a few of our members of our members did this and reported satisfying results. There is no extra charge for returning on Sunday. Tell the BeachCruiser Staff that you’re with the LBCC & display your Parking Pass.

g. Bring liquids & sun protection…It can get hot !

Any Waves Out There? By Roger Mann

I am peeling off my heavy wetsuit and am asked by two separate strangers, “Are there any waves out there?” I, with an ear-to-ear grin, quickly answer, “Yes.” My credibility is quickly shattered when both guys return from looking at the surf and quickly drive off. After a 1 hour drive to beautiful Santa Barbara on a crystal clear morning with 70 degree weather and no wind, I certainly was going to get in the water. I did check today before suiting up for about 5 seconds. I usually just pull up, get down the board, and get in the rubber and go. After all, “the clock is ticking.” It occurs to me there are many reasons I usually surf alone. After all, who else enjoys small mushburgers? Today, there were 2 other guys spread apart 100 yards doing the same thing I was doing (going left, right, and straight). On the ride to the shore you could see every school of bait fish, every little shark (benign) and halibut. That, by itself, would “make my day.” Many years ago I decided to never drive or boat by smooth small surf. “Checking it out” has rarely occurred to me. As it turns out, over the long run, it has offered more opportunities to get wet and at least paddle. After all, don’t we usually spend more time prone paddling than standing up and riding? I know that is something we all hate to admit, but think about it. You might want to consider the source the next time you ask, “Is there any surf?” You may want to say, “Are there any rideable waves?” Never ask, “Is it any good?” That requires an opinion and mine is certainly not valid! In most cases my answer is, “Yea, it was great and I was on-fire.”

MY MOM LIVES ON THE BEACH IN CENTRAL CALIFORNIA. WHEN I HEARD THE FOLLOWING MORNING ABOUT THE

QUAKE AND SUBSEQUENT TSUNAMI (AND WARNINGS HERE) I DIDN’T EVEN CONNECT TO THE POSSIBILITY THAT SHE

MIGHT BE IN DANGER, BUT MY SON IMMEDDIATELY SAID “WE’VE GOTTA CALL GRAMMA” AND HE DID, ONLY TO

REACH HER VOICEMAIL. “SHE MUST BE SLEEPING” HE SAID. LITTLE DID WE KNOW THAT SHE HAD ALREADY BEEN
