Vision | Purpose Raised for One Purpose | Display God’s Power and Glory Isaiah 26:8-9 – Yes, Lord, walking in the way of your laws, we (I) wait for you; your name and renown are the desire of our (my) hearts. My soul yearns for you in the night; in the morning my spirit longs for you.

Romans 9:17 – For Scripture says to Pharaoh: “I raised you up for this very purpose, that I might display my power in you and that my name might be proclaimed in all the earth.”

Vision | Legacy Living Fully Alive Over eighteen centuries ago, St. Ireneaus penned this rather provocative sentence: “The glory of God is a human being fully alive.” Whatever else these words mean, this insight underlines what discovering our spiritual identity is all about.

It is about aliveness – coming alive to the wonder of our belovedness in God’s eyes, discerning the depth and sacredness of ordinary life, alerting ourselves to the the hidden tentacles of evil within and around us, becoming more aware of those closest to us, responding to the suffering of our neighbors.

Above all, it is about waking up the always available presence of the crucified Christ, alive and at large throughout the world, who invites us to be His followers wherever we are.” Trevor Hudson, Discovering Our Spiritual Identity.

NotesWhat does it mean to: 1. Come alive to the wonder of our belovedness in God’s eyes. 2. Discern the depths and sacredness of our ordinary lives, 3. Be attentive to the hidden tentacles of evil, and 4. Pay attention to others.

This is What the Lord says: Isaiah 42:5-21 This is what God the Lord says— the Creator of the heavens, who stretches them out, who spreads out the earth with all that springs from it, who gives breath to its people, and life to those who walk on it: 6 “I, the Lord, have called you in righteousness; I will take hold of your hand. I will keep you and will make you to be a covenant for the people and a light for the Gentiles, 7 to open eyes that are blind, to free captives from prison and to release from the dungeon those who sit in darkness. 8 “I am the Lord; that is my name! I will not yield my glory to another or my praise to idols. 9 See, the former things have taken place, and new things I declare; before they spring into being I announce them to you.” 10 Sing to the Lord a new song, his praise from the ends of the earth, you who go down to the sea, and all that is in it, you islands, and all who live in them. 11 Let the wilderness and its towns raise their voices; let the settlements where Kedar lives rejoice. Notes14 “For a long time I have kept silent, I have been quiet and held myself back. But now, like a woman in childbirth, I cry out, I gasp and pant. 15 I will lay waste the mountains and hills and dry up all their vegetation; I will turn rivers into islands and dry up the pools. 16 I will lead the blind by ways they have not known, along unfamiliar paths I will guide them; I will turn the darkness into light before them and make the rough places smooth. These are the things I will do; I will not forsake them. 17 But those who trust in idols, who say to images, ‘You are our gods,’ will be turned back in utter shame. 18 “Hear, you deaf; look, you blind, and see! 19 Who is blind but my servant, and deaf like the messenger I send? Who is blind like the one in covenant with me, blind like the servant of the Lord? 20 You have seen many things, but you pay no attention; your ears are open, but you do not listen.” 21 It pleased the Lord for the sake of his righteousness to make his law great and glorious.

Isaiah 35:3-6 Strengthen the feeble hands, steady the knees that give way; say to those with fearful hearts, “Be strong, do not fear; your God will come, he will come with vengeance; with divine retribution he will come to save you.”

Then will the eyes of the blind be opened and the ears of the deaf unstopped. Then will the lame leap like a deer, and the mute tongue shout for joy.

NotesAssessment Where are you today? Where do you want to be in 30, 60, 90, 365 days?

“To stand fully in the present is the reason we look at the past for understanding. It is also the reason we look forward in faith to what we cannot yet fully see. The present always stands between memory and hope. This is the vantage point from which you understand the past and look forward into God’s future for you.” Helen Cepero, Journaling as a Spiritual Practice.

Key Scriptures Pay Attention Hebrews 2:1 – “We must pay the most careful attention, therefore, to what we have heard, so that we do not drift away.”

Isaiah 42:20 – You have seen many things, but you pay no attention; your ears are open, but you do not listen.”

Name Your Desires Mark 10:46-52 – As Jesus and his disciples, together with a large crowd, were leaving the city, a blind man, Bartimaeus (which means “son of Timaeus”), was sitting by the roadside begging.

When he heard that it was Jesus of Nazareth, he began to shout, “Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!”

Many rebuked him and told him to be quiet, but he shouted all the more, “Son of David, have mercy on me!”

Jesus stopped and said, “Call him.”So they called to the blind man, “Cheer up! On your feet! He’s calling you.” Throwing his cloak aside, he jumped to his feet and came to Jesus.

“What do you want me to do for you?” Jesus asked him. The blind man said, “Rabbi, I want to see.”

“Go,” said Jesus, “your faith has healed you.” Immediately he received his sight and followed Jesus along the road.

Notesabove all the nations on earth. All these blessings will come on you and accompany you if you obey the Lord your God:

Deuteronomy 4:9 – Only be careful, and watch yourselves closely so that you do not forget the things your eyes have seen or let them fade from your heart as long as you live. Teach them to your children and to their children after them.

Isaiah 43:18-19 – “Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past. See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the wilderness

Precious Promises Isaiah 42:16 – I will lead the blind by ways they have not known, along unfamiliar paths I will guide them: I will turn the darkness into light before them and make the rough places smooth. These are the things I will do; I will not forsake them.

Remember Mark 8:17-25 – Aware of their discussion, Jesus asked them: “Why are you talking about having no bread? Do you still not see or understand? Are your hearts hardened?

Do you have eyes but fail to see, and ears but fail to hear? And don’t you remember?

When I broke the five loaves for the five thousand, how many basketfuls of pieces did you pick up?”

“Twelve,” they replied.

“And when I broke the seven loaves for the four thousand, how many basketfuls of pieces did you pick up?”

They answered, “Seven.”

He said to them, “Do you still not understand?”

They came to Bethsaida, and some people brought a blind man and begged Jesus to touch him.

He took the blind man by the hand and led him outside the village. When he had spit on the man’s eyes and put his hands on him, Jesus asked, “Do you see anything?”

He looked up and said, “I see people; they look like trees walking around.”

Once more Jesus put his hands on the man’s eyes. Then his eyes were opened, his sight was restored, and he saw everything clearly.

NotesHope Psalm 33:20-21 – We wait in hope for the Lord; he is our help and our shield. In him our hearts rejoice, for we trust in his holy name.

Psalm 130:4-6 – But with you there is forgiveness, so that we can, with reverence, serve you.

I wait for the Lord, my whole being waits, and in his word I put my hope.

I wait for the Lord more than watchmen wait for the morning more than watchmen wait for the morning.

Psalm 131:1-3 – My heart is not proud, Lord, my eyes are not haughty; I do not concern myself with great matters or things too wonderful for me.

But I have calmed and quieted myself, I am like a weaned child with its mother; like a weaned child I am content.

Israel, (YOUR NAME) put your hope in the Lord both now and forevermore.

Psalm 34:11-14 – Come, my children, listen to me; I will teach you the fear of the Lord. Whoever of you loves life and desires to see many good days, keep your tongue from evil and your lips from telling lies.

Turn from evil and do good; seek peace and pursue it.

Joy Psalm 4:7a – Fill my heart with joy..

Psalm 16:1-2,5-11 – Keep me safe, my God, for in you I take refuge. I say to the Lord, “You are my Lord; apart from you I have no good thing.”

Lord, you alone are my portion and my cup; you make my lot secure. The boundary lines have fallen for me in pleasant places; surely I have a delightful inheritance.

I will praise the Lord, who counsels me; even at night my heart instructs me.

I keep my eyes always on the Lord. With him at my right hand, I will not be shaken.

Therefore my heart is glad and my tongue rejoices; my body also will rest secure, because you will not abandon me to the realm of the dead, nor will you let your faithful one see decay.

NotesReorienting Exercise | Personal Compass* (Taken from Journaling as a Spiritual Practice by Helen Cepero) South- A place of joy, sunshine, creativity, imagination, spontaneity, and play. Questions to Ponder: Where do I feel my creativity being called forth? What do really long to do? Who do I want to be and how do I nurture and feed that desire? What hobbies bring delight and life to my soul? How can I enjoy them more? What friendship would you like to nurture and bring closer to you?

East – The direction of the dawn, the rising sun. This is the place of new beginnings. Questions to ponder: What light is just beginning to appear on the horizon? What am I being told to take hold of in a new way? Where am I being called to embrace something? What areas of my life need transformation or change?

West – This is the direction of the setting sun where there are endings and things that need to be let go. Questions to ponder: What maps no longer work for my life? What or who need to be released and let go? What beliefs or patterns do I need to die to? Where is deep healing needed? What areas of my life need change or transformation?

North – The guiding light…our true direction. Questions to ponder: Who is it that deeply loves me and guides me? What are the images or pictures of God that nurture and sustain me? Is there a grace story or a salvation story from my life that is central to my understanding of God or brings clarity to my own life? Who are my spiritual guides and deepest friends?

Take time now to look at all four quadrants and ponder for a moment God’s deep love for you.

Center – Stand and Look Questions to ponder: As you look at your personal/spiritual compass can you see areas of your life more clearly? What adjustments need to be made? Will you pray for God to show you the good path that you are to walk? Will you commit to obeying today? (A pre-decision is powerful!) What new spiritual practices will bring you closer to God? Can you name them?

NotesA New Vision A New Day with New Eyes and New Thoughts

Slight adjustments that will bring clarity and beauty Lamentations 3:22-24 – Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness. I say to myself, “The Lord is my portion; therefore I will wait for him.”

In review | What must I say to myself? 1. What is my view of GOD? He sees me as His Beloved, therefore I am He sees me as His child, therefore I am He desires to bless me, therefore I am

2. This ordinary moment, this day is SACRED. Today is the only day you have. Will you enter it with sacred eyes? See it as a gift for your growth.

See each day as a GIFT rather than a LIMITATION

The truth of a gift is this – It is not what is given but how the receiver responds and accepts the gift.

“Am I willing to receive this gift in a way that it becomes part of the continuing story of God’s work in my life and the life of the world? Or will I block the unfolding in my life by refusing to accept it. Seeing circumstances as gifts rather than givens changes the way we look at difficult realities. As you look at the past and ponder the future, what difference might it make if you choose to see the givens of your life as gifts rather than limitations.” Helen Cepero

Living Fully Alive Is a Choice | Legacy Deuteronomy 30:15-20 – See, I set before you today life and prosperity, death and destruction. For I command you today to love the Lord your God, to walk in obedience to him, and to keep his commands, decrees and laws; then you will live and increase, and the Lord your God will bless you in the land you are entering to possess.

But if your heart turns away and you are not obedient, and if you are drawn away to bow down to other gods and worship them, I declare to you this day that you will certainly be destroyed. You will not live long in the land you are crossing the Jordan to enter and possess.

This day I call the heavens and the earth as witnesses against you that I have set before you life and death, blessings and curses.

Exodus 15:26 – He said, “If you listen carefully to the Lord your God and do what is right in his eyes, if you pay attention to his commands and keep all his decrees, I will not bring on you any of the diseases I brought on the Egyptians, for I am the Lord, who heals you.”

Job 33:31 – “Pay attention, Job, and listen to me; be silent, and I will speak.”

Set Apart for a Purpose Jeremiah 1:5 – “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart; I appointed you as a prophet to the nations.”

In closing | What now? What will be your response to God’s voice today? Was there anything that became more clear for you as you encountered your personal/spiritual compass or the scriptures? What adjustments will you make in order to gain greater clarity for your story? Take time to write the scriptures from today. Continue to fill in your personal/spiritual compass with words, magazine pictures, or art. Take 3x5 cards and create your own ABC’s. Create a weekly focus with each of the qualities and ask God to help you see Him more clearly. Who will help you accomplish what you desire?
