❖ Rose is one of the most talked about plants throughout history & mythology featuring in many poems, plays and novels. There is something about the plant that has had humans captivated for centuries and the same rings true of the essential oil.

❖ The word rosa comes from the Greek word rodon (red) as the roses of the ancients were a deep crimson colour.

❖ Its blossom symbolises beauty, love and the heart, youth, perfection and femininity.

❖ Originating from Asia, there are some 250 different species of rose and over 10,000 different hybrid varieties.

❖ There are many ways to look at using rose for ourselves and our clients but we need to be aware of which cultivar we are using as they all have different chemistry.

❖ The main roses used in aromatherapy are:

Damask Rose from Rosa damascenaCabbage Rose from Rosa centifolia The rarer Rosa gallica

❖ Make sure you use a reputable supplier that can provide you with a GC trace for the oil as Rose is commonly adulterated with either carrier oils, solvents or cheaper oils such as geranium to stretch it to go further.

❖ Bulgarian rose is said to be superior due to its individual climate, this rose is cultivated in the Rose Valley in Bulgaria, specifically between the Balkan range and the Sredna Gora mountains, due to its fertile soil. It’s growing conditions so fickle and precise, many have attempted to grow the Bulgarian varietal in other areas like France, Romania and China, with no success.

❖ Turkish rose climate varies dramatically from Bulgaria— cold and snowy winters, very dry and hot summers, but during spring, the area undergoes a very rainy season which makes it possible to cultivate the Rosa Damascena species. It has a lower quality scent and is said to be about 60-70% the price of Bulgarian rose.

August 2020 Eros (the Greek god of love & sex) is credited with giving the worlds first rose.

Steam distilled rose is created by distillation of the flowers petals, which must be picked just after the dew. It is said that it takes 4,000kg of flowers to yield just 1 kilo of rose oil.

Rose oil was said to be first discovered at an Indian wedding in the 10th century. A ditch circling the garden was filled with rose water and a scum was noticed floating on the surface, which turned out to be oil that the heat of the sun had caused to separate from the water.

August 2020 The scent is more delicate than that of the absolute.

The oil is well reputed for its efficacy for nervous conditions – palpitations, irritability, insomnia, depression and grief.

Rose otto is also good for the skin which is why it is the focus of so many cosmetics. It helps to soften and hydrate the skin and is most suited to dry, mature and sensitive skin types. It also has an astringent effect on capillaries and some have noted it to be useful for rosaceae.

The perfect oil for self love and to help repair a broken or rejected heart. It can be like a hug in the bottle for emotions.

Also known to be an aphrodisiac and resonates with the heart chakra.

August 2020 Recognisable as a thicker consistency and also a deepened colour that is a deep orange/red.

Rose absolute is always obtained through solvent extraction rather than steam distillation.

The resultant oil will contain a small amount of the solvent used to extract. For this reason, some therapists will not use it because they do not consider it a true oil.

Its properties are the same as the steam distilled rose although I do not find it as effective on the emotions but it is much more purse friendly.

It is often used in cosmetics as it is slightly cheaper than the rose otto and stronger smelling.

❖ Rose essential oil clears hot and inflamed emotions and has been recommended by many texts for deep upset, grief and for easing depression.

❖ Many associate rose with the heart chakra and it can be used to help open up the heart when grief or other negative emotions have closed it.

❖ I find rose most beneficial when someone is in need of a dose of self-love or forgiveness. In today’s society we don’t always put ourselves first and everyone has done something they wish they hadn’t. The oil has the ability to help us be kinder and gentler on ourselves and those around us.

August 2020Hydrolats also known as hydrosols are the aromatic waters produced by the steam distillation of botanical material, usually during the production of essential oils.

Hydro means water and lat comes from the word for milk, because when fresh these waters can be cloudy or milky from the suspended soluble plant extracts.

Generally calming and soothing with very few contra-indications, hydrolats can be safely used with children, animals, in combination with homeopathic remedies and for those with a fragile immune system when stronger treatments may not be well tolerated.

Hydrolats can last for up to two years if they are kept in a cool and place dark (preferably refrigerated).

August 2020 Avicenna was said to be the first to distill rose hydrolat.

It makes an excellent face toner due to its divine aroma, it is one of the few hydrolats that smells like what you expect.

It is excellent for mature, dry, sensitive and devitalised skins; good in masks, steams, compresses.

Internally it can be good for menopause, combats PMS, cramps and mood swings.

As a spray it makes a nice perfume for those that can’t tolerate over the counter ones or anything too strong and it promotes emotional balance for both male and female energies.

Rosehip Carrier Oil Rosa Canina/ Rosa rubignosa

August 2020This oil is known as ‘dog rose’ perhaps because the root of the plant was believed to be a cure for rabies when bitten by a rabid dog.

Native to S. America – the Andes of Chile & Peru. Yields a golden reddish oil – due to the carotenoids. Rose hips contain 20 times as much vitamin C as oranges!

The best oil is cold-pressed and usually comes from Chile, although it is most expensive.

Research in Chile shows rose hip oil to be a tissue regenerator perhaps due to its high unsaturated fatty acid content, making it an excellent oil for a mature skin.

It has been shown to be effective on scars, wounds, burns, sunburn, eczema and ageing.

The oil will keep for up to 2 years in a cool, dark place.

How to incorporate rose intoyour routine.

August 2020 ❖ Create a rose tea with warm water and rose hydrolat, approximately a capful to one cup of water.

❖ Make a rollerball to apply to pulse points. For 10ml either use 10ml fractionated coconut oil as a base or try 5ml each of aloe vera gel & rose hydrolat as the base if you prefer less oily feel and 2-3 drops of rose essential oil.

❖ Create a luxury body or bath oil with carrier oils of your choice and your favourite oils including rose. It blends wonderfully with so many others.

❖ Use the hydrolat as room or aura spray.

❖ 30ml of rosehip carrier oil or 20ml of rosehip and 10ml macadamia carrier oil as a base.

❖ 2 drops of Rose Otto essential oil

❖ 1 drop of Geranium essential oil

❖ Apply to freshly cleaned skin after a spray of rose hydrolat as a toner.
