Salts that are kept in a container that is not air tight will lose their aroma more quickly. After a day, you may wish to mix well again to ensure that the oils are well incorporated. To Color to Your Salts: For the most natural bath salt recipe, leave your bath salts uncolored. Certain exotic salts including Hawaiian Red Sea Salt and Black Sea Pink Salt are naturally colorful. Try mixing these salts with with Dead Sea or plain sea salt for a speckled effect.

Bath Oil:

Multiply your blend by 3 to obtain a total of 15 drops of your chosen blend. Continue by using the

15 drop blend in the Bath Oil recipe.

Ingredients:

2 ounces carrier oil such as Jojoba

20 drops Lavender Essential Oil or 15-20 drops of your own blend of essential oils (be sure they

are EOs that are not known to be skin irritants)

Directions: Blend the oils together and store in a glass bottle. The recipe may be doubled or tripled.

To Use: Do not use all 2 ounces of bath oil in one bath. After you have drawn your bathwater, add

about 1/4 ounce (7-8ml) of the bath oil blend to your bath water.

Mix well to ensure that the blend has dispersed well in the tub and hop on in. It's best to add the

bath oil just before getting in the tub instead of while the water is running so that the essential oils

don't evaporate before you get into the tub. Using this bath oil blend is safer than adding pure EOs

directly to the bath water. This is because undiluted essential oils added to bathwater can settle in

one spot on your skin and cause irritation.

Bath Salts:

Multiply your blend by 4 to obtain a total of 20 drops of your chosen blend. Continue by using the

20 drop blend in the Bath Salts recipe.

Ingredients:

3 cups salt. Recommended salt types: Sea Salt, Dead Sea Salt, Himalayan Pink Salt, Epsom salt, or

a combination these salts. Salts typically come in several grain sizes. Combining multiple grain

sizes can make your salts more visually appealing. Although chunkier salts often look prettier,

larger salts do take longer to dissolve in the tub and can be a little painful or awkward if you step

or sit on on a few chunks that haven't fully dissolved.

15-24 drops of your selected essential oil or essential oil blend. Be sure and take heed in the safety

data for the oil(s) you choose to use.

Optional: 1 tablespoon JoJoba, Fractionated Coconut Oil or other carrier oil for moisturization

Directions:

Place the salt mixture into a bowl. If you have chosen to include the optional vegetable oil within

your salt recipe, add it to the plain salts and mix well with a spoon or fork. Then, add the drops of

your chosen essential oils. Again, mix very well. Add the mixture to a pretty jar, salt tube, or

container that has a tight fitting lid. Salts that are kept in a container that is not air tight will lose

their aroma more quickly.

After a day, you may wish to mix well again to ensure that the oils are well incorporated.

To Color to Your Salts:

For the most natural bath salt recipe, leave your bath salts uncolored. Certain exotic salts including

Hawaiian Red Sea Salt and Black Sea Pink Salt are naturally colorful. Try mixing these salts with

with Dead Sea or plain sea salt for a speckled effect.

Page 2: Aromatherapy Recipes

If you would like to add color to your salts, FD&C liquid dye or mica powder can be added before

you add the essential oils. When adding FD&C grade liquid dye, be sure to add only a drop at a

time and stir well. When adding mica powder, only add a tiny amount (1/16-1/8 a teaspoon is

usually sifficient) and stir very well. Using too much dye or mica powder can discolor the water

and discolor skin, so be very careful. Leave bath salts at a soft pastel color. It is also important that

you make sure that you are using skin-safe colorants and that the user of your bath salt blend does

not have any allergies or sensitizations to the colorant that you have chosen.

To Use:

Add 1/2-1 cup of the salts to running bath water. Mix well to ensure that the salt has dispersed well

in the tub before entering. To keep the essential oils from evaporating too quickly, you can add the

bath salts just before getting in the tub instead of while the water is running. Sitting on undissolved

chunky bath salts can be uncomfortable, so make sure the salts have dissolved well before

entering.

Massage Oil:

Multiply your blend by 2 to obtain a total of 10 drops of your chosen blend. Continue by using the

10 drop blend in the Massage Oil recipe.

Ingredients:

1 ounce carrier oil such as Sweet Almond Oil

10-12 drops essential oils. Select oils that will compliment the goals of your massage and that are

not contraindicated or unsafe to use by the giver or recipient of the massage.

Examples:

Stress Blend: 6 drops Clary Sage/2 drops Lemon/3 drops Lavender

Aphrodisiac Blend: 8 drops Sandalwood/2 drops Jasmine

Sleep Inducing Blend: 10 drops Roman Chamomile

Sore Muscles Blend: 2 drops Ginger, 1 drops Black Pepper, 4 drops Peppermint, 5 drops

Eucalyptus.

Directions: Mix the oils well and store in an airtight, dark glass container. This recipe can be

doubled or tripled.

To Use: Apply only a small amount (1/2-1 teaspoon) for each massage.

Disclaimer: This blend assumes that you know how to safely give a massage. AromaWeb assumes

no liability for your use of this recipe. For more information, read the Aromatherapy Massage

article.

Air Freshener:

Multiply your blend by 6 to obtain a total of 30 drops of your chosen blend. Continue by using the

30 drop blend in the Air Freshener recipe.

Ingredients:

4 oz. clean spray bottle with a fine mist setting (do not use a bottle that previously contained

cleaning products or hair products such as hair spray).

30-40 drops of your favorite essential oil or essential oil blend keeping the safety data of the

chosen essential oil(s) in mind

Page 3: Aromatherapy Recipes

1.5 ounces of distilled water and 1.5 ounces of high-proof alcohol (vodka is suitable, isopropyl or

rubbing alcohol is not). Alternatively, you may omit the alcohol and increase the amount of

distilled water to 3 ounces. The alcohol helps the aroma linger for a longer duration.

Example essential oil blends that may be used:

20 drops lime

14 drops bergamot

4 drops ylang ylang

2 drops rose

15 drops clary sage

9 drops lemon

6 drops lavender

20 drops rosemary

8 drops grapefruit

4 drops peppermint

2 drops spearmint (optional)

15 drops bergamot

15 drops spearmint

Be sure and take heed in the safety data for the oil(s) you choose to use since an air freshener, by

its nature, will come in contact with all those in your household.

Directions:

Fill the spray bottle with the choice of either 1.5 ounces of distilled water and 1.5 ounces of

alcohol or 3 ounces of distilled water. (Even though a 4 oz. bottle is suggested, leave about 1 oz.

unfilled so you can shake the bottle well between uses.) Then, add 30-40 drops of essential oil.

Essential oils can very in strength. You may want to try 20 drops at first especially if you live in a

household with someone who is sensitive to strong aromas. Shake the bottle prior to each use, and

let it sit for about a day before making a conclusion that the aroma is too weak; the aroma can

change after the air freshener has had time to sit. Mist lightly in the room. Be especially careful not

to allow the air freshener mist fall onto furniture or into open beverages.

Body Lotion

I was torn on what title to give this recipe because this recipe isn't made from scratch, and I'm not

trying to be misleading. Making lotion from scratch is a bit complex (but definitely worth the

effort), and I wanted to offer a recipe that beginners could enjoy making. So, we begin by working

with an unscented lotion base and add essential oils. Very easy!

Page 4: Aromatherapy Recipes

(In the future, I will likely add a complete lotion recipe to AromaWeb, but in the meantime, I

recommend reading Making Aromatherapy Creams & Lotions: 101 Natural Formulas to Revitalize

& Nourish Your Skin by Donna Maria Coles Johnson.)

Ingredients:

8 oz. unscented hand or body lotion (sellers of natural products and aromatherapy products

sometimes sell lotion bases, SLS-free unscented shampoo andshower gel)

10 drops Patchouli

20 drops Sandalwood

5 drops Carrot Seed

Directions: The best way to blend the essential oils into the lotion is to pour the lotion into a bowl,

add the oils and then mix very well. Once mixed, add the lotion back to the bottle using a funnel.

Patchouli, sandalwood and carrot seed oils help aid dry skin. The patchouli and sandalwood oils

have a lovely rich scent when blended together. The carrot seed oil is wonderful for the skin, but is

a little harsh in aroma.

Enjoy experimenting with other essential oils in this recipe. But do be sure to heed the safety

precautions for each essential oil that you use and avoid essential oils that are known to cause skin

irritation.

To Use: Use as you would use other hand and body lotions.

Hydrosols

Hydrosols are by-products which are collected during the steam distillation of various plants,

flowers and herbs. The term “Hydrosol” comes from the latin words “Hydro” (means water) and

“Sol” (means solution). Consequently hydrosol is the watery solution and was first used be the

American herbalist Jeanne Rose in 1990. Hydrosols are also referred as Floral waters or Distillate

waters.

They are full of anti-inflammatory and water soluble ingredients of the plant, while they are free of

any irritant substance and therefore they are ideal for natural skin care for both children and adults,

for males and females. The authentic Hydrosols do not contain any alcohol and synthetic essences.

They are antiseptic, styptic, refreshing and are considered to be perfect substitutes of tonic lotions,

after shaves and invigorate hair products. They can also be used for compresses, skin cleaning and

can be added to bath water. Moreover, they can be used for house-sanitization creating a nice and

refreshing atmosphere or can be added to the detergent when washing clothes

After consulting a physician or a druggist, various hydrosols can be ingested with food, water or

juice. As they contain no ethereals but only water soluble ingredients of plants, ingestion is not

dangerous, as far as the cautions for use are carefully followed.

How to blend Essential Oils

Essential oils provide both strong psychological and physical benefits for those individuals who

use them. It is believed that when essential oils are blended, their synergy produces a stronger

product. However, blending essential oils can be rather difficult and even a bit frustrating for those

who try to do so. For this reason, many people, especially beginners, give up trying to do so all

together, but there is really no need to so. If one takes the time to do a little research and is willing

to experiment, they can learn how to blend essential oils properly. However, one first needs to get

the basics down.

These basics include learning that the best essential oil blends are those that come from the same

group. For example, florals mix best with florals, citrus essential oils blend best with other citrus

essential oils. Most essential oils fall under the following categories; woody, green, resinin, spicy,

floral and citrus. For individuals just starting out or who have had some trouble mixing oils in the

past, it is best to begin with florals because they are the easiest ones to mix. In fact, it is very hard

to mess them up. Oils that are harder to blend include those in the spicy and citrus groups.

It is important to note that the very best essential oil blends are those that bring out the best

properties of each individual oil. It is ultimately about the strength of the final product. However, if

Page 23: Aromatherapy Recipes

you are more interested in developing a specific scent then you will want to focus on what blends

smell the best when combined together.

When blending your oils it is important to note that essential oils come in three different

categories, top notes, middle notes and base notes. Top notes are light fragrances that help to

energize and lift your mood. Common top note oils are cinnamon, peppermint, orange and lemon.

Middle notes have a little more weight then top note essential oils, but not as much as base notes.

They are the main components of aromatherapy blends. Melissa, lavender, rosemary, nutmeg and

tee tree are examples of middle note essential oils. Base note oils last the longest and tend to be

heavier and more rich than all of the other oils. Some examples include clove, jasmine, ginger and

vanilla.

When you mix oils, be sure to add oils from each category. It works best to blend them in a 3:2:1

ratio. Where you should mix 3 parts top note oils, to 2 parts middle oils to 1 part base note oil.

Blending your own essential oils is a fantastic way to develop a blend that best matches your

lifestyle and personal taste. It is also a fun way to experiment and play around with different

scents. You may be pleasantly surprised at which oils, when mixed together, develop into a scent

that you can’t live without.

Base Oils

Base oils are used in aromatherapy in order to dilute essential oils so that they can be safely

applied to the skin. Base oils are often referred to as carrier or vegetable oils because they are

“carrying” the essential oils to the skin and they derived from various nuts, fruits and seeds of

certain plants. The best base oils are extracted adopting the “cold pressed method”. In this

technique the seeds, fruits or nuts are expressed without external heat producing pure carrier oils

rich in vitamins and minerals that conserve the therapeutic properties of their source.

Vegetable oils come from plants that grows all over the world and are used for therapeutic

purposes, facial treatments, massage, etc. Carrier oils should be used according to each skin type.

In most cases, the appropriate vegetable oils for normal skin are Calendula, Jojoba, Apricot and

Sesame oil. For dry skin, you should use Avocado, Castor, Rose Hip Seed and Olive base oil and

finally for greasy skin the proper carrier oils are Grape Seed, Hazel nut, Almond and Apricot oil.

The base oils can be categorised according to their origin. The most well known carrier oils that

comes from nuts are Sweet and Bitter Almond, Jojoba and Walnut base oils, from fruits are Olive

and Avocado base oils and from seeds are Wheat germ, Soya and Grape seed base oils.

Aromatherapy Diffuser

An easy way to use essential oils in your place is to vaporize them. Aromatherapy diffusers (or

essential oils burners) are appliances used for the evaporation of essential oils. To use a diffuser,

fill the bowl to the top of the burner with water adding 6 – 10 essential oil drops and place a tea-

light underneath the bowl. The essential oil burners create a soothing and relaxing atmosphere that

fills any room.

You do not need to be an expert at blending oil types in order to use the aromatherapy diffuser.

You can experiment with your favourite oil fragrances. Study their properties and create your

personal aroma, fitting to your desire. Be careful: never leave an oil burner unattended and never

place oil burners near flammable material.

Aromatherapy Candles

Aromatherapy involves using the essential oils that come from plants, flowers and herbs to heal

and soothe the body naturally. Such oils are believed to be both therapeutic to both the body and

the mind. The use of aromatherapy candles is a very simple and enjoyable ways for individuals to

enjoy the benefits of essential oils.

When an individual inhales these essential oils, they begin to work on the off actuary nerves. These

nerves go from the nose to the brow and help to affect a person’s mood. So a person can feel

relaxed, stimulated or even romantic by simply smelling these essential oils. These oil also certain

healing properties due to their antibacterial, therapeutic, antiviral and even antibiotic elements.

Aromatherapy candles are a very effective way to both relax and to heal the body. The very best

ones have high quality and soothing essential oils. These candles receive their scents from pure

essential oils and they do not contain any man made fragrances. When you are looking for

aromatherapy candles, be sure to only look to purchase those that use 100% essential oils. Many

candles will claim to be aromatherapy, but in fact are simply fragrant candles. Skip these. They

contain many of the harmful, man made materials that do nothing to benefit the body.

Many people, who purchase and use aromatherapy candles, believe that common ailments can be

remedied in some way with their use. Specifically, muscle cramps, cold symptoms and even

headaches can be treated with the use of aromatherapy candles. When purchasing aromatherapy

candles, it’s important to keep a couple things in mind. If you are an individual who loves to go

into candle shops and smell candles before you purchase them, you may be a bit disappointed at

first smell. This is because real aromatherapy candles do not smell that strong in the store.

However, when you take it home and light it up, you will be able to smell the candle in all of its

glory. Aromatherapy candles release their scent when the wax is burning.

It is important to also learn how to store aromatherapy candles for maximum effectiveness. To

keep them fresh, it is best to store them in a place that is dark and cool. If you do so, they will store

very well. Aromatherapy candles can last for a very long time, in fact, up to 10 years. But again,

this is if you store them correctly. Be sure to keep them out of the light, as light will damage them.

Page 31: Aromatherapy Recipes

The uses of aromatherapy candles are a great way relax your body and your mine. Many people

believe that they even have some medicinal effects. The best thing to do is to simply spend a little

money to invest in one, see if it help you feel better, relieves your headache, cramps or ease

common cold symptoms. If you love candles anyway, aromatherapy candles are the ultimate ones

because they don’t only smell great, but they are made from all natural materials. You won’t be

inhaling toxic fragrances that may have negative long term effects

Aromatherapy Massage

Aromatherapy massage is the alternative therapeutic technique which combines the natural

therapeutic properties of the essential oils and the healing power of massage therapy.

Aromatherapy massage not only has powerful physical, emotional and mental effects but it is also

described as a great relaxing and rejuvenating experience.

Although, aromatic herbal massage originates from healing therapies of the ancient east world,

aromatherapy body massage has become very popular in Western world in recent years. The word

‘massage” is most likely to derive from the ancient Egyptian word “mass” which means push

softly.

The benefits of aromatherapy massage affect a wide range of health conditions of nervous,

circulatory, lymphatic, immune and muscular systems. Experienced massage therapists use the

appropriate techniques and essential oils blends in order to achieve the desirable cure or relief.

Aromatherapy massage is a pleasant method for mental clarity, relaxation, stress and headaches

alleviation. It can cure insomnia, depression, back, neck, arthritis problems, skin disorders,

digestive, respiratory conditions and can enhance circulation and immune system. Although, the

efficiency of aromatherapy massage is scientifically proven, you should always keep in mind that

alternative therapies are complimentary to conventional medicine.

The aromatherapy oils which are used in an aromatherapy massage session are the carrier oils and

the essential oils. Carrier or base oils are used in order to “curry” the essential oils into to body and

are usually derived from fatty parts of vegetables. Essential Oils are the potent aromatic volatile

liquids with organic compounds, which contain natural healing properties and extracted from

various plants. Each pure essential oil has a unique scent, different properties and may be used for

cure of specific conditions. They are absorbed through skin into the bloodstream and distributed to

whole body, promoting physical and psychological wellbeing.

It is most possible that after visiting a massage therapist you will get so much pleasure from the

aromatherapy massage that you will like to receive as more massage therapies as possible. Of

course you can massage yourself, but it is much more enjoyable and relaxing to get massage by

someone else. In addition, experienced professional masseurs know better the techniques and

blends that are needed for a beneficial and delightful aromatherapy massage. Usually, they give

massage in a cosy room equipped with a special massage table, aromatherapy candles and relaxing

gentle music of natural sounds that can make aromatherapy massage a unique experience.

Aromatherapy Safety

Essential oils are highly concentrated and very potent substances that can be harmful if not handled

properly. Therefore, some precautions should be taken in order to avoid damaging effects and

enjoy aromatherapy benefits. Read the following safety tips to get informed about the secure use of

the essential oils. However, this page cannot include all the circumstances that you may face. If

you have any doubts about the safe use of essential oils, please consult a qualified aromatherapist.

Page 32: Aromatherapy Recipes

• Never apply essential oils undiluted to skin. You should first add the essential oils to a base oil

(sweet almond oil, hazelnut oil, olive oil, avocado oil, jojoba oil, etc) and then you can safely apply

the blend to your body. Only a few gentle essential oils (lavender, chamomile) can be used directly

on the skin (in very small quantities) in cases of insect bites or burns.

• Use small quantities of oils. Remember that only a few drops are needed for any aromatherapy

blend. Usually the body products (for adults) are consisted of only 2% of essential oils and 98% of

base oils. Keep in mind that by using only a few drops of essential oils, you not only save money,

but you use essential oils wisely and safely.

• Beware of potential allergic reactions. Before using for the first time any essential oil it is

advisable to check for possible allergic reactions. Keep in mind that an essential oil which is

described as safe, may cause allergic reaction to some individuals and therefore you should always

test it before use. Dilute only 1 drop of the essential oil with carrier oil and apply the mix on your

skin. Wait at least 24 hours to verify whether it is irritating for you or not.

• Do not use essential oils close to the eyes area. Remember that you should never use essential

oils near your eyes. Always close your eyes when you inhale an essential oil and consider that

washing carefully your hands after using any essential oil is the best way to avoid eyes irritation or

damages.

• Essential oils during pregnancy and lactation. Although there are controversial opinions about

this issue, we advise you to consult your GP before using any essential oils during pregnancy and

lactation. Most doctors and physicians suggest avoiding the following essential oils: rosemary,

hyssop, sage, jasmin, peppermint, juniper and myrrh oil.

• Aromatherapy and children. Children may use essential oils only under the careful supervision

of an experienced adult. Consequently, it is wise to keep the aromatherapy kit out of children’s

reach. Moreover, special caution should be taken when using aromatherapy products for babies and

children. There are several oils that are not appropriate for children, while the suitable essential oils

should be diluted twice or more.

• Aromatherapy and medical conditions. Special care should be taken in cases of health

problems such as asthma, epilepsy and high blood pressure. Asthmatics and people suffering from

respiratory disorders must avoid inhalations. The contraindicated essential oils for epilepsy are

hyssop, rosemary, sage, fennel and eucalyptus oils while for high blood pressure, sage, rosemary,

eucalyptus, thyme and rose.

• Essential oils may cause skin sensitivity to sunlight. The essential oils from the Citrus Family

(lemon, lime, bitter orange, grapefruit, bergamot etc) increase the sensitivity of skin to sunlight.

Hence, you should always wait for at least 5 hours after using them and before exposing your skin

to ultraviolet sun rays, otherwise you will redden and burn your skin.

• External and internal use of essential oils. Do not ingest essential oils. Use them only

externally. Many essential oils are toxic and thus internal use can be extremely dangerous. Oral

consumption can take place only under the guidance of a qualified and specially trained aroma

therapist.

• Dangerous essential oils. There are several hazardous essential oils which only experienced

qualified aromatherapy practitioners may use them. Bitter almond, pennyroyal, camphor, sassafras,

wormwood and wintergreen oil are only a few of the oils that are inappropriate for aromatherapy.

As a result, always check for the latin botanical name of the oil before purchasing it, in order to

certify that you will not buy any dangerous essential oil available at the market.

• Essential oils are flammable. Almost all essential oils are flammable. Thus, you should be very

careful when handling them. Do not put the bottles of essential oils near fire or naked flame and

never burn pure essential oils (without water) in an aromatherapy vaporizer.

• Essential oils storage. Essential oils should be stored in a cool dark place or in the fridge. Try to

keep temperature fluctuations as less as possible in order to preserve their therapeutic attributes.

Essential oils are usually sold in small dark yellow, violet or blue glass bottles. The dark glass

protects the essential oils from ultraviolet rays which may deteriorate their potency. Remember to

Page 33: Aromatherapy Recipes

close tightly the bottles’ lids because essential oils are volatile substances. Properly stored oils

have 6 months minimum lifetime and 2-5 years maximum.

• Emergency actions. If you spill by mistake an essential oil into your skin or eyes, wash without

delay the affected area with much vegetable oil or milk (which works better than water) and

request your doctor’s immediate medical care. If you accidentally consume any essential oil, drink

a lot of milk and go right away to the nearest poison control center for suitable medical care

Natural Hair Dyes for Blonde HairThis herbal hair rinse not only lightens, brightens and highlights blonde and light brown hair,

but it also removes product buildup, balances the scalp's pH and improves shine and

manageability. Herbal rinses are the best!

Note: If you're using this natural hair dye recipe to cover gray, you have to use it over and over

and over. It's not a quick-fix option. If you're looking for instant results, check out the notes for

henna up above or go with commercial hair dye.

Here's how you make it:

1. Combine 2 cups (500ml) distilled water with 3 tablespoons each dried Calendula petals,

Chamomile flowers and chopped Lemon Peel in a pot and bring to a boil on the stove.

Page 37: Aromatherapy Recipes

2. Remove from the heat and let steep for 1 to 3 hours.

3. Strain out the herbs and pour into a large dark glass or PET plastic bottle.

4. Add 2 tablespoons Apple Cider Vinegar.

5. To use your herbal hair rinse, simply pour it over your hair after conditioning, massage it

gently into your scalp and then rinse. (Don't get it in your eyes - it stings!)

Natural Sun Streaking

Here's a happy alternative to sitting with your hair cooking under a smelly cap of chemicals...

1. Mix the juice of 1 lemon with 2 tablespoons strong chamomile tea.

2. Using an inexpensive straw hat with lots of holes in it, pull strands of hair through the

holes. (A crochet hook or pencil is good for this.)

3. Apply the lemon/chamomile mixture to the exposed hair. Sit in the sun for 2 hours - you'll

end up with natural-looking streaking. Don't forget sunscreen! (Good book, glass of

wine...)

Saffron Natural Hair Dye for Golden Color

This recipe gives hair a rich golden tint - it's a good one for grey roots in blonde hair.

then pour over the saffron. Let soak for 10 to 15 minutes.

2. Strain out the saffron and add 1 tablespoon lemon juice.

3. To use, pour the liquid through your hair 15 or 20 times, re-rinsing with the same liquid.

On the final rinse, wring out your hair and leave for 15 minutes before rinsing with clear

water.

Natural Hair Dyes for Red Hair

2 1/2 cups of distilled water in a non-aluminum pot for 20 minutes.

2. Remove from heat. After the mixture has cooled, strain out the marigold, saving the liquid.

Add 1/4 cup red wine to the liquid.

3. To use, apply the liquid as a final rinse after shampooing and conditioning, pouring it over

your hair and catching it in a basin to reapply several times. Allow your hair to dry

naturally in the sun if possible.

4. Repeat the rinsing process every time you wash your hair until you're happy with the color.

Page 38: Aromatherapy Recipes

Herbal Hair Rinse for Red Hair

Follow the herbal rinse recipe above, but use 3 tablespoons dried hibiscus flowers and 3 tablespoons

dried calendula petals.

Natural Hair Dyes for Dark HairThis natural hair color recipe brings out rich brown tones in dark hair.

1. Simmer 1/3 cup walnut shells, black tea, cherry tree bark or whole cloves in 2 1/2 cups

distilled water in a non-aluminum pot for 20 minutes.

2. Remove from heat. After the mixture has cooled, strain out the herbs, saving the liquid.

3. To use, apply the liquid as a final rinse after shampooing and conditioning, pouring it over

your hair and catching it in a basin to reapply a few times. Allow your hair to dry naturally

if you can.

4. Do this every time you wash your hair until you reach the desired shade.

Natural Hair Dyes for Gray Hair

Rosemary-Sage Natural Hair Dye

This natural hair dye recipe can take a while to be effective. You have to rinse, re-rinse and repeat until your gray is gone. Sad to say, but the only way to get instant gray coverage is with

commercial products.

Ingredients

• 2 cups hot water

• 1/2 cup dried sage leaves

• 1/2 cup dried rosemary leaves

Directions

1. Combine all ingredients in a pot. Simmer for 30 minutes, then steep for several hours.

Strain, then use the resulting liquid for the colorant.

2. Pour the liquid onto your hair and leave on until dried. Rinse and dry.

3. Repeat weekly until you obtain the desired shade, then monthly to maintain color.

Again, this method of covering gray works cumulatively over time - it's not an instant fix. Also,

some sources recommend using the dye daily rather then weekly or monthly. You'll need to experiment and see what works for you.

Secret Recipe for Smoothing Frizzy EndsHere's a quick trick for smoothing out frizzy, fly-away ends: Pour a TINY, dime-sized amount of

jojoba oil into your palm. Rub your palms together, then smooth them over the ends of your hair.

Page 39: Aromatherapy Recipes

Stay away from the hair near your scalp or you'll weigh your hair down and it will look lank and

greasy (this will also happen if you use too much oil.)

If you have unmanagably frizzy hair, there's a TON of information (plus some great products)

that can help you at Just Naturals Organic Care. Scroll to the bottom of the page to learn about the

different kinds of frizzy hair. Excellent!

To use, dampen your skin with warm water, then gently massage the tea tree oil facial wash into

your skin. Rinse, pat dry, then apply astringent toner and moisturizer or acne treatment oil.

Best Aromatherapy Weight Loss Essential OilsThe most well-known essential oil for weight loss is Grapefruit.

Bergamot, Clary Sage, Cumin, Dill, Fennel, Ginger, Lemon, Patchouli, Peppermint,

Sandalwood, Spearmint, Vanilla and Ylang Ylang are some other appetite-suppressing

essential oils for weight loss.

The trick to using these essential oils to curb your cravings and suppress your appetite is to inhale the appetite-suppressing essential oil for at least five minutes. Inhaling for less than five

minutes can actually stimulate your appetite - not good!

Make Your Own Aromatherapy Weight Loss Inhaler

Use this handy aromatherapy inhaler any time you feel a craving come along. Carry it in your

bag, keep one in your desk, your kitchen... wherever it will do the most good.

Pour a teaspoon of coarse sea salt in a very small dark glass or PET plastic bottle and add one of the

following blends:

Aromatherapy Weight Loss Citrus Blend

• 30 drops Grapefruit essential oil

• 4 drops Lemon essential oil

• 1 drop Ylang Ylang essential oil

Page 51: Aromatherapy Recipes

Aromatherapy Weight Loss Mint Blend

• 20 drops Peppermint essential oil

• 10 drops Bergamot essential oil

• 4 drops Spearmint essential oil

• 1 drop Ylang Ylang essential oil

Aromatherapy Weight Loss Herbal Blend

• 15 drops Basil essential oil

• 15 drops Marjoram essential oil

• 1 drop Oregano essential oil

• 1 drop Thyme essential oil

To use your aromatherapy weight loss inhaler, take three long, slow, deep breaths of the

aroma. Take a short break, then take three more deep breaths. Do this three times. Sniff long and

hard through each nostril. Really flood your nose with scent - in this case, more is better!

Use the inhaler before eating and whenever your appetite is triggered. Scientific studies

show that the more often you inhale essential oils for weight loss throughout the day, the more

effective it will be.

Some studies suggest that aromatherapy is more effective for weight loss if you change up the

scents every day. You might try making an aromatherapy weight loss inhaler with each of the

essential oil blends above, and then use Citrus on Monday, Mint on Tuesday, Herb on Wednesday

and so on.

Using Aromatherapy for Emotional Eating & Stress

Aromatherapy can help overcome food addiction, especially when we eat for comfort. Instead of

eating to stuff down our stress, anger, boredom, depression, anxiety or other feelings, we can use

aromatherapy to help change our emotional state.

Try using Vanilla essential oil to connect with feelings of security, home and comfort. You

might find that inhaling its sweet scent replaces your urge to eat that cookie or doughnut.

You can also try Cocoa Absolute, the sweet, rich essence of chocolate. Again, you may find that

its smell replaces the need to actually eat a chocolate bar or brownie.

It's so easy to reach for a slice of pizza or a box of cookies (my personal vice) when stress is

shredding our nerves. But when it comes to weight loss, you're better off reaching for some

massage oil or bath salts instead.

Page 52: Aromatherapy Recipes

We all need to give ourselves permission to 'get off the ride', lock the door and spend some

time taking care of ourselves. When we're calmer and more rested, we have the capacity to

respond more positively to the stressors in our lives - and that includes meeting the challenge

of achieving our weight loss goals.

Pain Relief Therapeutic Massage Oil Recipe

Ingredients

• 8 drops Lavender essential oil

• 4 drops Marjoram essential oil

• 1 drop Cedarwood essential oil

• 1 drop Chamomile essentail oil

• 1 drop Ginger essential oil

• 1/4 cup (60ml) carrier oil of your choice such as apricot kernel oil, jojoba oil or sunflower oil

• Optional: Substitute 1 tablespoon (15ml) borage oil for 1 tablespoon of carrier oil.

Borage oil helps support mobility of joints and tissues.

Directions

Combine all ingredients in a dark glass or PET plastic bottle. (I recommend using one with an oil or

lotion dispenser cap so you don't accidentally pour it all over everything.)

Wait at least 24 hours before using to let the blend 'cure'. Store the bottle in a cool, dark place.

Use within three months.

If you want to make a larger amount of this therapeutic massage oil recipe, depending on the size

of the bottle, simply double or triple the recipe. (Remember it tends to go rancid after a few

months.)

Caution: Ginger may irritate sensitive skin, which is why it's at such a low concentration. If

you're exceptionally sensitive, leave it out.

If you're allergic to ragweed, you may also want to leave out the chamomile.

Aromatherapy for DepressionMake Your Own Aromatherapy Inhaler

This portable little aromatherapy inhaler is great because you can carry it in your bag or keep

it in your desk (keep an extra one in your car - it's great for road rage!) and use it whenever

you need a lift.

Page 53: Aromatherapy Recipes

Pour a teaspoon of coarse sea salt in a very small dark glass or PET plastic bottle and add one of the

following blends:

Mood Lifter for Irritable Depression

• 10 drops Bergamot essential oil

• 5 drops Grapefruit

• 4 drops Sweet Orange

• 1 drop Geranium essential oil

• 1 drop Ylang Ylang essential oil

Comforting Blend for Grief-Related Depression

• 10 drops Rose Absolute or Rose Otto essential oil

• 4 drops Sandalwood essential oil

• 4 drops Neroli OR Petitgrain essential oil

Soothing Blend for Anxious Depression

• 8 drops Lavender essential oil

• 8 drops Grapefruit essential oil

• 2 drops Marjoram essential oil

• 1 drop Chamomile essential oil

• 1 drop Geranium essential oil

To use, take three long, slow, deep breaths of the aroma. If you're really stressed out or

miserable, take a short break, then take three more deep breaths. You can do this up to three

times.

When the scent in your aromatherapy inhaler fades, just add in another batch of the essential

oils, give the bottle a shake and you're good to go again.

Another great option is to make the above blends into a bath or body oil. Simply add the

essential oils to 2oz (1/4 cup) aromatherapy carrier oil of your choice.

Confidence Perfume Recipes

Let these confidence perfume recipes give you enthusiasm, gusto and confidence. Feel positive

about yourself, protect yourself and have the courage to live the life of your dreams.

Instructions for making aromatherapy perfume recipes

Follow these simple instructions for making your very own aromatherapy perfume recipes.

Firstly we start with the base. You can use alcohol or a carrier oil but a mixture of both is ideal. An

odorless spirit such as Vodka is the best choice along with Jojoba. Jojoba has a long shelf life and

once it's on the skin it tends to dry out leaving your wonderful scent behind.

As Jojoba is the most expensive carrier oil I recommend that while you are experimenting you use

one of the cheaper, odorless carrier oils such as almond oil or apricot kernel oil. Once you are

happy with your experimenting you can then blend using jojoba oil.

Equipment you will need:

• Measuring spoons

• Small funnel

• Small colored bottle

Instructions:

1. Measure 1 teaspoon of your carrier oil (jojoba, almond or apricot kernel) and 1 teaspoon of

alcohol (Vodka), using the small funnel, into your bottle.

2. Add the essential oils from your chosen recipe one drop at a time. You may need to use a

dropper if your essential oil jars do not already have dropper measures built in.

3. Shake the mixture well after adding each drop.

4. Put the lid on tightly and store in a cool, dark place for a minimum of 12 days shaking at

least 3 times each day.

5. Enjoy!

Special things to note:

• Some oils can cause skin irritation, please check the specific oil profiles for each of the

recipes you chose. Never apply essential oils directly to the skin.

• If you are pregnant there are certain oils I recommend you avoid, such as Aniseed,

Angelica, Basil, Cedarwood, Cinnamon, Clary Sage, Cypress, Juniper, Hyssop, Marjoram,

Parsley, Rosemary and Sage. Again please check the specific oil profiles for more

information.

• Citrus oils such as Bergamot, Grapefruit, Lime, Lemon, Neroli, Orange and Petitgrain can

be photosensitive and should not be worn in the sun.

• Perfumes will smell different on different people and skin types, don't be disappointed if

you don't like them all. Experimenting with these recipes is all part of the fun. You can

always give them away to a friend as a gift!

Comments and feedback from one of our readers: Ellen Ray is an aromatherapist in North

Carolina. Not long ago she called and asked me to Express Mail some Helichrysum Italicuum and

Rose Hip Seed oil to her. She recently sent this, with permission to copy it onto the page: >You

>tremendously. There's barely the trace of a scar on my lip and none on

>my face. The doctor who removed the stitches was amazed and asked for

Aromatherapy Massage benifits Emotional Well-Being

Stress has been identified as the root cause of many diseases, both physical and emotional.

Aromatherapy massage can be used an as alternative medicine to overcome both physical and emotional stress. When you are stressed, your body goes into fight and flight syndrome which is triggered

automatically when faced with the stressful situation. The adrenal glands, located above the kidneys, secrete adrenaline, which is a hormone responsible for increasing the heart rate, blood pressure, blood

sugar and blood fats. It is also responsible for producing the sweat which cools down the body, when it gets ready for attack. The stress response affects the stomach and abdomen, leading to urinating or defecating.

Stress in limited quantity is good since it helps you achieve your goals. But the continued prolonged stress leads to problems like diabetes, blood pressure and heart diseases.

It has also been shown to reduce your body’s immunity thus leading to infections.

Page 74: Aromatherapy Recipes

Work related stresses can be caused due to your employer failing to meet your expectations, you not being

able to meet your employer’s expectations, unrealistic deadlines etc. You can find aromatherapy as your saviour to ease this stress. Keep an aromatherapy essence burner on your desk and use the blend of four

drops of frankincense and geranium or four drops of basil and bergamot. You can also inhale these oils by putting them on the cotton wool pad or use them in the bath. Aromatherapy massage of marjoram and

lavender in the base oil will ease muscular tension and make you feel better.

For stress at home, use a blend of four drops of chamomile and lavender or four drops of neroli and

frankincense in an essence burner. You can also use lemongrass to calm your mind. If you are an aggressive type, you can calm yourself by using a blend of four drops of sandalwood and ylang ylang or four drops of

vetiver and bergamot in a burner, bath of have an aromatherapy massage.

If you are suffering from a pain caused by injury, condition or illness, you are likely to get easily stressed.

To ease the irritation caused by pain, use a blend of lavender, chamomile and marjoram. Add three drops to

the bath or five drops of each to 30 ml of base oil and use in a burner. To relieve general stress and induce relaxation, use the essential oils of bergamot, lavender and ylang ylang.

Stress has taken over the lives of young children too. Constant pressure to perform at the peak in studies, the pressure induced by the parents to become an all rounder in various fields and the peer pressure to

conform to their ways of living and thinking has caused a tremendous strain on the young generation. Try a blend of two drops of Roman chamomile and bergamot to ease anger and irritability. To alleviate pre-exam

nervousness and help concentration use a blend of three drops of basil and sweet orange or lemongrass in a burner in the study room or around the house. Avoid violent outbursts by using the blend of four drops of

clary sage and jasmine either in a burner or added to the bath

One of the best methods of easing stress is to become assertive.

You learn to say NO to the things that you do not want and stand up for your own rights and needs. To

strengthen your assertiveness, and increase your resolve, try a blend of two drops each of frankincense, geranium and sandalwood. You can use this in a burner, bath or enjoy a relaxing aromatherapy massage.

Avoid procrastination by using a blend of four drops of grapefruit and four drops of sandalwood or cajeput. Persevere in difficult circumstances by using a blend of four drops each of frankincense and sandalwood.

If you are suffering from depression, use a blend of four drops each of jasmine and bergamot. There are other oils like basil, , chamomile, clary sage, lavender etc.

who aid in easing depression. But avoid using marjoram. Fatigue can be reduced by trying a blend of four

drops each of rosemary and frankincense. You can use grapefruit if you have high blood pressure.

Use these oils regularly in aromatherapy massage, bath or in essence burner. This will give you the most

effective results.

The essential oils of lavender, geranium, neroli, rosemary, rose, andfrankincense are historic "antiaging" ingredients for mature skin.Jasmine, myrrh, carrot seed, and

helichrysum also rejuvenate theskin, encouraging new cell growth. Since jojoba oil also containsnatural wrinkle removing qualities, it is a natural for a base orcarrier oil to add the

essential oils into. Mixing and matchingcreates a natural synergy. Example: Lavender has its own attributesas does helichrysum have its own. However, when they are mixed, instead

of 1 and 1 making 2, they magnify each other to the tune ofperhaps 5 or 6 or more. This oil may be used day or night or bothfor a truly enhancing and youthful appearance.

mixture into lip balm containers. Allow to cool completely before placing the caps onto your lip

balm containers.

Test Your Essential Oils For Purity

Do you wonder if your essential oils are pure? If they aren't, they're not going to work for what you're using them for. Some can be downright toxic especially if you're using them in quantity or on pets and children. A simple test will tell you if your essential oils are pure or if they include petroleum-based solvents which can cause environmental health problems.

Here's the test: Put a few sample drops of your oils on a blotting paper. Pure essential oils will not leave any residue once they have evaporated. Petroleum solvents will.

Cheap oils give cheap results. It's a matter of price vs. cost. You can buy them for a lower price, but they've cost you more because you didn't get the potency or quality you thought you were getting. Be Smart! Buy Pure!

Do not get essential oils in your eyes.

Keep essential oils away from children.

Take the necessary precautions during pregnancy, terminal illness and with children as shown.

Essential oils should be diluted before using topically (with exception for lavender and tea tree).

Essential oils can be grouped by their main scent. The most common are citrus, spicy, floral, woody and

earthy.

Page 90: Aromatherapy Recipes

Here are some lists to help you decide which essential oils belong in each category.

Citrus

• Lemon

• Lime

• Tangerine

• Bergamot

• Floral, Woody and/or Earthy

• Spicy combines well with most other groups

Page 91: Aromatherapy Recipes

So now you are ready to make your own perfume. There is one other point to consider and that is about

top, middle and base notes.

Top notes should make up the bulk of the blend. Middle notes about fifty percent of overall number of

drops and then only a drop or two of the base note.

Here is an example of how to choose a great blend of aromatherapy perfume.

I want an uplifting blend, that provides some balance of my emotions. I am also feeling a little worn out.

My choice:

• 4 drops of orange essential oil - for its uplifting properties. It is also a top note so I use

more drops.

• 2 drops of lavender essential oil - for its balancing properties. It is a middle note so I use

less.

• 1 drop of cinnamon essential oil - for its grounding properties. It is also excellent for

feelings of exhaustion. Being a base note, one drop is all you need.

Aromatherapy perfume blends must be mixed with a carrier oil!

Cinnamon Essential oil can cause a skin reaction so make sure essential oils are diluted and test first.

10mL of essential oil is a good amount for the number of drops in this recipe.

I love using sweet almond oil as it doesn't have any perfume of its own and won't interfere with the

blend.

Of course this is only a guide and when you make an aromatherapy perfume you will know that it smells

great. You will develop you favourites! You will feel like an Essential Oil Goddess!

The perfect blend for lovers:

• 2 drops rose essential oil

• 2 drops jasmine essential oil

• 6 drops ylang ylang essential oil

Body Powder/Baby powder

(use less and mild oils for baby powder such as lavender or chamomile)

8 ounces arrowroot powder (herb) or cornstarch or a combination of both.

4 ounces baking soda, extends the base and gives deodorizing benefits.

add 15 drops of your favorite essential oil or essential oil combination -

Blend thoroughly and put in container.

1/4 or 1/2 as much for baby powder - corn starch is probably best & leave out the baking soda.

The best healing baby powder for diaper rash was given to me by a little old woman when my

oldest daughter was a baby (she's now 41) Brown flour in a dry pan with no oil and apply to

bottom.

Lip Balm

1/2 cup (4 oz.) almond or other carrier oil (not mineral oil)

1 oz. beeswax (If too soft add more beeswax- too hard add more carrier oil.)

Page 92: Aromatherapy Recipes

1 tbsp. honey or 1 capsule of vitamin E

(squeeze vit. E from pierced capsule - throw capsule away)

Add a few drops of essential oil. (Do not exceed 5 drops at least the first time.)

Combine carrier oil and beeswax, and warm oil to melt beeswax. Stir in honey or vit. E and

then add the Essential oil. Pour into small jars or balm tubes to harden.

You can make a solid perfume using the same method - just add more essential oil. I always use

pure essential oils, however, you could substitute perfume oils. You might also use a healing

combination such as "NoMo Pain" which smells great.

Essential Oil cream

1 cup carrier oil or cocoa butter - (do not use mineral oil)

2 1/2 Tbsp. beeswax

1 cup water (luke warm) Distilled, aloe vera juice or Rosewater

30 to 50 drops essential oils

In a glass measuring cup add oil and beeswax. Put the measuring cup into a pan of water - the

water needs to go at least 1/2 way up the outside of the measuring cup. Heat until the beeswax

melts. Remove cup from pan. Cool a little but do not let the beeswax harden. Test by carefully

putting finger in the wax mixture. It should not be uncomfortable, and a film of wax should form at

the edge. Pour luke warm water into a blender - remove center ring. Turn blender on high speed

and slowly add the oil and beeswax mixture. It is best to use a wide mouth funnel to keep

splattering to a minimum. The temperature of the oil and how steady the oil is poured will have

some bearing on the finished product. There is some leeway and perfection is not necessary.

This should begin to harden after about 3/4's of the oil has been added. At this point you may need

to stir - preferably use a wooden chopstick along the top edges and be careful to stay away from

the blades in the center. Slowly add the rest of the oil until it becomes too stiff to take any more

oil or until all the water is dissipated. Sometimes there is some water left - pour it off or absorb

with a paper towel.

At this time you should have a thick, beautiful cream. Now add the essential oils and turn on the

blender just enough to combine the essential oils. Do not over blend. Put in jars. May be

refrigerated for a longer shelf life.

Lotion - follow the above directions with these quantities of ingredients

3/4 cup carrier oil or cocoa butter

1 cup distilled water, Aloe Vera Juice or Rosewater

2 Tbsp. beeswax

30 drops Essential Oils

Cream recipe - very simple #2

2 oz carrier oil or a mix of carrier oil and aloe vera and 1 - 3 pea sized balls of beeswax.

If stirred before it is completely cool and hardened it becomes gritty. Add 5 to 10 drops of

Essential oils after it has cooled and hardened to maintain the strength and integrity of the essential

oil.

Page 93: Aromatherapy Recipes

This can also be made into a body scrub if made quite runny and mixed with

salt and eos.

Rosewater

2 cups distilled water

1/4 cup vodka or Everclear (liquor store)

1/2 cup red rose petals (red gives best color)

Best time to pick is between 10:00 A.M. and Noon after dew is off but before the sun has released

their essential oils.

May add up to 15 drops rose oil if petals don't have enough scent.

Combine water, vodka or everclear and petals in a covered jar - place in the sun.

It takes less than a day for the oils and color to be extracted from the petals by the sun.

Strain through a coffee filter into a covered bottle and refrigerate.

It needs to be used within 2 weeks.

Glycerine and Rosewater Lotion

May add an equal amount of vegetable glycerin to the above recipe. Shake well and bottle. May

be used all over the body.

Bath Crystals

1 cup salt - rock, sea, or mineral salt

3 to 5 drops - Vegetable food coloring

(shake or mix well after each 2 drops added until it reaches desired color.)

20 to 25 drops - Essential oil Shake or mix well until oils are thoroughly absorbed.

They will sparkle like jewels if you add a tsp of glycerine.

Salt melts and softens the water, the glycerin will moisturize your skin and the color will vanish.

Very simple soap

1 cup plus 2 tablespoons Crisco

1 1/3 cups olive oil

1/4 cup Red Devil lye

6 fluid ounces cool distilled water

Arrange for two hours without interruptions. Wear long sleeves. Put on safety glasses and gloves.

Keep vinegar at hand for lye splashes.

Measure the cool water in the heatproof cup. Place it in the sink, where it can't be knocked over.

Working in a well-ventilated area, measure the lye. Hold your breath (not because of the danger,

but because there will be fumes) and pour the lye slowly into the water, stirring until dissolved.

The lye solution will top 175 degrees.

Place the Crisco in the stainless-steel pot over low heat until it melts (about 20 minutes). Add the

olive oil. After another 15 minutes, take the soap pot off the heat.

Page 94: Aromatherapy Recipes

Within five minutes, both the pot and the heatproof cup should feel toasty (about 115 degrees if

you have a glass candy thermometer) but not hot. Slowly pour the lye solution into the fats, stirring

steadily. The mixture will lighten and start to thicken.

Looking for trace. Stir diligently for 15 minutes, or until the soap traces. Trace occurs when a bit

of raw soap, dribbled from the spatula across the surface, leaves "traces" for a few seconds before

sinking back in. If you don't get trace after 15 minutes, take a 10-minute break. Stir another 15

minutes. Repeat. Your soap should eventually trace. (If it doesn't, recheck your measurements.

You may have to start over.)

At trace, stir in 1 1/2 tablespoons scent and pour the soap immediately into the mold. Insulate.

Scrape the leftover soap in the pot onto a paper towel and toss it.

Wash the utensils in hot water.

The cure. Leave the soap undisturbed for 24 hours. It will heat up as it goes through its chemical

reaction, then cool. When the soap is firm, cut into four to six bars and put them in a dry, well-

ventilated place, away from kids and pets.

Vegetable-based soap needs at least two weeks to tie up loose ends, while soaps made with animal

fat seem to take twice that long to lose their "bite." Be patient.

Otherwise, you'll arouse unnecessary suspicion if you offer your creation with the words: "Here is

your mild and moisturizing bar of homemade soap, but don't use it for two weeks, OK?"

Make your own Perfume

• Essential oils

• Pure grain alcohol (Everclear, from a liquour store) Do not use wood alcohols which you buy in

stores and pharmacies as they are poison to your body.

• Distilled Water

Perfume is simple to make, the trick is to put the essential oils together creating a smell you like.

Perfume is made up of base notes (the smell stays the longest on your skin), middle notes (smell

stays second longest), and top notes (smell of oil evaporates first). Because the oils all evaporate at

different rates the perfume may smell different as time goes on. Below are listed easily found

essential oils divided into base, middle and top notes.

There is some controversy on which oils belong in each group so this is only a starting place.

• Base notes-Cedarwood, Cinnamon, Patchouli, Sandalwood, Vanilla. Ylang ylang

• Middle notes-Clove, Geranium, Lemongrass, Nutmeg, Neroli

• Top notes-Bergamot, Lavender, Lemon, Lime.

• Bridge-vanilla, lavender (add a few drops to join base, middle and top notes together)

To make your perfume, mix at least 25 drops total of essential oils divided evenly between base,

middle and top notes. Start with the base notes, then middle, then top, smelling as you go. Add a

few drops of the bridge oil. Add 2 1/2 ounces of alcohol, shake for a few minutes, then let it sit for

48 hours (or up to 6 weeks-the longer it sits, the stronger the smell). Add 2 tablespoons distilled

water, stir, then pour through a coffee filter and put it in a bottle.

Anti-Anxiety Aromatherapy Recipes

Of course not all of us are experts in the use of aromatherapy and don't happen to know any

infusions. If you'd like to give aromatherapy a go for alleviating your own stress or that of a loved

one, then follow one of the recipes below:

Recipe 1

3 drops of clary sage oil, 1 drop of lemon oil and 1 drop of lavender oil.

Recipe 2

2 drops of roman chamomile oil, 2 drops of lavender oil and 1 drop of vetiver oil.

Recipe 3

3 drops of bergamot oil, 1 drop of geranium Eoil and 1 drop of frankincense oil.

You can then multiply the amounts maintaining the same ratio in order to create more or less. Now

to use the recipe you will want to make something of it so that you can enjoy using it. To spray it

in the air, simply take 30 drop sand add 1.5 ounces of distilled water with 1.5 ounces of alcohol

and then spray out of a spray bottle.

Page 101: Aromatherapy Recipes

Alternatively, if you wish to use your anti-anxiety aromatherapy recipes as a bath oil then add 15

drops to 2 ounces of carrier oil and mix before placing in the bath and mixing well, make a hot

temperature and you will be able to lie back and relax and enjoy the smells. Alternatively try

dipping a warm flannel in and then wrapping it around your face to surround yourself with the

smell and the relaxing heat. Alternatively you can take the same recipe and use it as a massage oil

to help relax the muscles at the same time as creating the relaxing smell.

Lastly one very popular option is to mix with bee's wax in order to create a candle. You will need

to first melt the wax as instructed and then mix it with your drops (around 15-20) before leaving it

to harden in a candle jar and adding a wick. You will then be able to release the smell by burning

the candle.

Enjoying the Aromatherapy

To get the most from the aromatherapy you need to of course create an environment that is

conducive to relaxing and stress-busting. To do this make sure that you have a quiet and dark

room, light some candles and listen to some calming meditation music. Now make sure to forget

all of your troubles that have been bugging you through the day – set yourself 30 minutes to an

hour and make a pact not to let anything bother you until you have finished relaxing. When you

return you will be energized and better able to take on challenges.

Alternatively if you have a willing partner then you can ask them to use the massage oil recipe in

order to massage your back, shoulders and neck. You can still use lighting and candles, and the

added muscular manipulation will help to ease the tension out of these areas and prevent knots and

headaches.

Many people also choose to use aromatherapy to help them relax into a deep sleep and particularly

lavender blends. Make sure that you are cautious if you decide to use candles while drifting off to

sleep.

Aromatherapy and Love

Romance is in the air! Literally it is in the air when you diffuse essential oils, more specifically

romantic, aphrodisiac essential oils.

According to some, Valentine"s Day is named for a priest, Valentine, who served in the 3rd

century in Rome. Emperor Claudius ll decided that single men made better soldiers than married

ones with families, so he banned marriage to all potential soldiers. Valentine, realizing the injustice

of the ban, defied Claudius and continued to marry young lovers in secret. He was eventually

discovered and Claudius ordered him put to death. It is unlikely that St. Valentine could have

predicted that his acts of kindness would develop into one of the most celebrated days of the year,

especially for chocolate, lingerie and card manufacturers.

Essential Oil Gift for a Romantic Valentine"s Day

Essential oils make a great valentine gift for either men or women. Paired with a romantic evening

at home or away and you have the perfect combination for relaxation and love. Imagine the setting

- a candle light dinner, a small bowl of hot water with five drops of your chosen essential oil in it

creating a romantic atmosphere, appropriate background music… who knows where it might lead.

Rose Essential Oil and Rose Hydrosol

Roses have been connected with romance for centuries, which is why Valentine"s Day is the

florists" busiest day of the year. An early East Indian tradition at weddings was to throw rose petals

over the couple and to cover the bed with fresh rose petals. It was believed that the rose petals

would reduce anxiety and create a romantic atmosphere.

Rose essential oil is known as a women"s oil. It has a powerful effect on the uterus - it is cleansing,

regulating and tonic, and is valuable where there is a loss of uterine muscle tone. It is thought to

aid conception and appears to increase the production of semen.

Rose hydrosol is a pleasant alternative to rose essential oil. It has the same properties but is less

concentrated and can be used safely on the skin.

Romantic and Aphrodisiac Essential Oils

Other aphrodisiac essential oils include:

Page 104: Aromatherapy Recipes

•Jasmine essential oil

•Neroli essential oil

•Ylang ylang essential oil

•Sandalwood essential oil

There is another group of essential oils that are known to arouse sexual desire, particularly in men.

This group includes:

•Black pepper essential oil

•Cedarwood essential oil

•Clary sage essential oil

•Patchouli essential oil

•Pine essential oil

•Vetivert essential oil

Ways to use Essential Oils

There are many ways to use essential oils to enhance Valentine"s Day. Use the essential oils on

their own or blend them together to make a personalized fragrance. Add essential oils to an

essential oil diffuser and plug it into the wall of the bedroom an hour before using. Try misting the

sheets or the body with rose hydrosol.

This Valentine"s Day, introduce essential oils and aromatherapy into the bedroom and romance the

night away with the benefits and aroma of essential oils.
