I’ve written the New Vic’s festive show every year since 2009. It’s a huge privilege to make a production that’s seen by the equivalent of 1 in 10 of the Potteries population, with many of the audience being children having their first ever trip to the theatre or families out for their Christmas treat. That’s quite a responsibility. I start writing in January, and spend pretty much the whole year thinking of Christmas! Here’s how I go about it.

One: the idea I start by pondering what stories are brimming with Christmas spirit. Am I inspired to adapt a particular story? What is on at a nearby theatre? How do teachers and schoolchildren respond when we consult them? These factors all contribute to the decision.

I knew the concept of The Prince and The Pauper well, both from the BBC TV version in the mid-70s, starring Nicholas Lyndhurst prior to Only Fools & Horses fame, but also from other films and versions that use the trope, from Trading Places through Blood Brothers to Mickey Mouse and even an episode of Blackadder. More recently, Barbie has starred in her own movie, The Princess and the Popstar; Sega created a console game; and Netflix’s The Princess Switch was a seasonal movie. I knew it was a popular idea that can fuel a compelling story.

Two: the crash edit But what would that story be? The novel, and the Errol Flynn film, contain a lot of court intrigue. Whilst fur-robed men whispering in candlelit corridors can make a thrilling Wolf Hall, I didn’t feel that would make the cut for family audiences at the New Vic festive show. I knew that I wanted to focus more on the adventure side of the story, and that I might replace characters like scheming Lord Hertford (played by Claude Rains in the ‘30s movie) with historical figures who are more widely known, yet who might serve a similar plot function. I felt that the repetitive nature of the prince’s journey outside the palace would need to be modified; and that the pauper’s experiences inside the palace would need to be equally important.

Three: a shed load of research It seems counter-intuitive to do this after putting

together the first rough draft, but some subjects are so big that you can find yourself drowning in research, so doing it this way round allowed me to focus on solving problems and enhancing scenes. I needed to know more about the historical characters themselves: Edward VI, Henry VIII, Mary Tudor, Elizabeth I. I read up on banquets, including dishes of swan and peacock; how Royalty would demonstrate their majesty to the general public, in the form of processions and river pageants. I visited Westminster Abbey and the Globe Theatre, and found Bruegel’s paintings Children’s Games and The Fight Between Carnival and Lent to be useful in getting a sense of life for the poorer sort.

The next two steps, four and five, are better the other way round, but I was busy transferring Around The World In 80 Days to New York and The Worst Witch to the West End, so the design team had to do their work before I could find time to complete the script.

Four: the design process The Tudor period was new to us as a creative team. I visited Coventry’s Spon Street for inspiration: this fascinating street is a collection of all the medieval buildings that survived second world war bombing campaigns. It is especially well recorded in diagrams and drawings, so we’ve been able to use it as our model of a Tudor street. Set designer Laura Willstead went to research the structure of an Elizabethan playhouse, accompanying a tour group around London’s Globe Theatre (I enjoyed imagining her as the only person bending down to take photos of how the walls sit upon their brick foundation so that she could replicate this in the set). With costume designer Lis Evans we learned about the Sumptuary Laws which restricted the wearing of certain types of cloth and fur to certain ranks of nobility (with the notable exception of actors) and were dazzled by the accounts of the Master of the Revels, including itemisation of expenditure on costumes for the players performing during coronation pageants, which helped me resolve a plot wrinkle that I knew needed to be reached more satisfyingly than in Mark Twain’s original.

Five: writing a detailed draft This one was quite a remarkable experience, as it mainly took place whilst floating on a lilo in a Florida

pool. I stayed there for a holiday after opening Around The World In 80 Days in Sarasota, and it’s only now that I realise that quite a lot of the spirit of that production has made its way into this one.

Another theatrical influence crept in at this point, too. Mark Twain was massively inspired by Shakespeare, so perhaps it’s not surprising that I have been as well. Whether it be his exhortation to the audience to use their imagination; his vivid interest in ghosts and witches; his focus on how clothes maketh the man (or woman), and how easily they can provide an impenetrable disguise. And he can always be relied upon for a choice insult.

Six: working with the Composer Composer James Atherton and I took a deep breath and delved into the world of hautboys, crumhorns and psalteries, listening to composers such as John Dowland, Thomas Tallis, Orlando Gibbons and even Henry VIII himself, whose song book has inspired two of the songs in this production. We were delighted to stumble across the suggestion that the nursery rhyme three blind mice had perhaps been inspired by Mary Tudor.

Seven: rehearsal Getting the play script into the rehearsal room is when

it undergoes the next big change. The first day, when we sit in a big circle with all the craft and production and marketing and education departments and read it aloud for the first time, is an anxious experience for us all. But then as the actors start to interrogate the text and put it on its feet in the rehearsal room, the magic starts to happen. This is my favorite bit of the writing process. It’s when the words really start to come to life: the characters become vivid, and the actors bring their special brand of charisma and energy and ingenuity to the play.

Opening night! Finally, having been lost in the world of the play for months, I get to see the play as if for the first time, all the moments where I’ve completely missed essential pieces of plot; or a moment that’s potentially confusing but none of us had spotted. It’s also the moment where the play gets to meet its most important character: the audience.

Finally... Of course, I’m already thinking about what next year’s festive show will be, and plan to sit down and start writing it just a few weeks from now…

Designer Laura Willstead’s stunning wrap-around design of miniature Tudor houses looked striking on her model box but how could we practically produce 110 handmade 3D houses whilst still building all the

other props and set for The Prince and The Pauper?

The houses aren’t the first time the New Vic has made use of the exciting equipment and expertise at Wavemaker, a digital technology specialist based in Hanley. You may remember the

beautiful willows hanging from the balcony for last year’s The Wind In The Willows and the vinyl cuts for The Snow Queen chandeliers; they were all laser cut at Wavemaker. So we were lucky to be able to make use of Wavemaker’s equipment and technology again.

SO HOW DID WE MAKE THE HOUSES?

STEP ONE Designer Laura hand drew four designs which Melissa from the Workshop team and Danni our Chief Electrician digitally converted into Inkscape Software so it could be exported as a file which can be read by the laser cutter.

STEP TWO By drawing in different colours the team differentiated between a “kiss cut” which looks like a

line drawn on the card and a “cut” which will cut all the way through the card. The drawings were then uploaded on to the computer at Wavemaker, downloaded into the laser cutter and the first test cuts were done!

STEP THREE With some editing and refining of the designs we were able to get the laser cutter to cut out a house in just over 5 minutes! And so the cutting of houses began…

STEP FOUR They then returned back to the workshop where Scenic Artist Denise painted and textured them.

STEP FIVE The houses returned to the technical team who installed internal LED lighting to give the houses life.

STEP SIX The houses were mounted and attached to the balcony balustrade where you can see them twinkling during the show.

The whole process was a real team effort which would have been impossible without the equipment at Wavemaker.

Wavemaker is a digital inclusion and engagement specialist which offers opportunities to grow skills in all areas of digital technologies.

Mark Twain (1835 – 1910)

Mark Twain is a celebrated author of major literary classics from The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and Adventures of Huckleberry Finn to The Prince and The Pauper.

He was born Samuel Langhorne Clemens in the village of Florida, Missouri on 30 November 1835. The sixth child to John and Jan Clemens he was in ill health as a child and some of his early years of sickliness and time spent with his mother he would later incorporate into his novels, but very often through rose-tinted glasses. In 1839, his family moved east to the town of Hannibal on the Mississippi River where his father believed that their fortune could be made; here he would be influenced by these surroundings to write the stories about Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn.

As a young boy he was imaginative and adventuring. He and his friends would often play pirates and other make believe stories or spend their time fishing, swimming and picnicking. Throughout his later life he was still drawn to the river as he was a keen riverboat pilot, as well as a journalist, lecturer and novelist.

His youth was peppered with tragedy, hardship and a very challenging social environment. He was witness to crime and murder in the town over his time there and his family

were not immune to tragedy either, as two of his siblings died in childhood and his father died in 1847 when Twain was just 13 years old.

In 1850 he became a typesetter for his elder brother at the Hannibal Journal, where he would start to write and draw sketches. It was during the American Civil War when Twain went to work as a reporter at the Virginia City Territorial Enterprise that he took the pen name Mark Twain. A riverboat pilot called Isaiah Sellers would sign off as Mark Twain, a reference to the boating term of ‘marking the twain’; he liked this, took the name and set about forging his writing career.

By 1869, due to his successful travelling trips lecturing and his career as a journalist, Twain was now one of the most famous writers in America. In 1876 his most famous works were published: The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and the sequel, Adventures of Huckleberry Finn.

Twain married Olivia Langdon in 1870 who was the daughter of a rich New York merchant. He felt that this would raise his social standing. Though he had huge success as a writer he had severe financial failings, which consequently would have serious implications on his life and mental health.

It was in 1881 that he wrote his fanciful novel about Tudor England: The Prince and The Pauper. He said it was written for ‘young people of all ages.’

During his later years, death and grief would fill his world again, as he lost 3 of his 4 children to illness, but his work would see him honoured with degrees from Universities on both sides of the Atlantic.

Twain died on 21 April 1910 at the age of 74 and is buried in Elmira, New York. He is remembered for his tales of American life in the south, as a humourist, a novelist, a political philosopher.
