A short presentationTony Nguyen

What we did

• Excursion to Vic Uni for kids to engage in activities and collect data

• 3 activities with recess and lunch breaks (no food provided) and a short ethics seminar

• Activity 1: weight lifting, reach test, beep test.• Activity 2: homeostasis. Body temp and heart

rate.• Activity 3: biomechanics. Throwing a ball and

kicking a footy with 3D cameras.

What we gathered

• Data for univariate and bivariate data yr 10 or 11.

• Qualitative vs. quantitative. • Graphs plots: frequency, bar, dot, box etc.• Talking points for increasing/decreasing trends.• Line of best fit and linear extension possible

What happened

• Students were happy with the activities and saw the relationship between information and performance. Relevant to their interests.

• The coaches/trainers were well spoken and prepared their own information sheets for a one hour 30 minute session

• Video and photo opportunities. • Kinovea program for sports analysis potential.

Maybe for specialist kinematics/physics.• Is it possible to have a maths excursion?

What next?

• The data collected from the day can be used for assessment (discussion, SACs, worksheets) and future reference for KLA

• Possible annual event?• PD days working with Vic Uni and other

schools to explore other areas for VCE mathematics and life skills.
