Hello, My name is Anna Vill, I am the President of the DECA chapter at Florida State. I am new to the world of RSOs and working with SGA and need information on how to best provide funding for our group for the 2019-2020 school year. I have been a member of DECA for one year and in that time we have won eight awards nationally and four awards internationally. We had an issue between semesters with a change in leadership, which resulted in a lack of information being passed down to me when I took office when it comes to getting the support our team needs. The funding we would need will go towards polos for the team to wear to networking events and tabling, our registration fees for national and international competitions, and the hotel accommodations required by DECA in order for us to compete. I understand that SGA may not be able to assist us in all of these funds, but any support we are able to receive is incredibly helpful. Any information you can give me on SGA funding or what I need to do while working with SGA as a representative for an RSO would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance with your time. Our team is incredibly grateful for all of your help.

Florida State University’s CMAA Chapter is a student run organization that helps educate students that are preparing to get involved in the club management industry. We aspire to influence young professionals to gain hands on experience and connect with established leaders in the industry. Mission Statement: To gain knowledge about the club industry, have our chapter prepared for real world experiences, and be able to explore other opportunities within the club industry. Executive Committee: President, Vice President, Secretary, and Treasurer. CMAA is a club open to any and all college students with an interest in the private club industry. The approximate number of students is 53. Student Conference

-Reasoning for $200: last years was $395 so half of that -In New York -> more expensive in general -Good student network opportunity -We are learning lessons that apply to real life given by professionals in the field

Ex. food and beverage operations is being taught by the F and B director at Chevy Chase Country Club

-Club tours -> learn about the multiple different types of club such as city, country, yacht World Conference

-Reasoning for $100: half of last years $195, -Also its world conference so having money for a hotel closer to the conference gives us better chance of connection with gm’s outside of conference -Network with general managers, clubhouse managers -The information is taught beyond relation to students it is taught to GMs too

• Past accomplishments o Being the only chapter associated with the only private club major o Chapter of the year 2019 o Joe Perdue Scholarship winners o Being host chapter for CMAA World Conference Orlando 2017 o Internships o Being on the news for Putting with Puppies o The Big Event o Annual leadership summit o Qualifying as a club for scholarships o The Players Championship o The masters o Job Placement o Sitting in on the Don Veller Course Focus Group o Volunteering at Internship Fair

American Association of Textile Chemists and Colorists FSU chapter is a part of the national AATCC organization and has been a part of FSU since 2005. The organization addresses the interests of students related to the retail industry and the fashion industry overall. Members receive exclusive information on internships and industry professionals with the help of the national AATCC organization resources. The student organization provides personal and professional growth opportunities for students of all majors. When possible, the club goes on field trips to local retailers, has guests speakers at general body meetings, and members have the opportunity to aid in the planning of an on-campus fashion show each semester.

The American Association of Textile Chemist and Colorists goal is to provide a platform for every student involved to have a better understanding of retail merchandising and product development for the textile, apparel, and retail industry.

In this organization we have two professors as the advisors. We have a President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer, Fundraiser chair and Social Media Chair. We also offer smaller leadership rolls within the organization such as fashion show director.

Our organization accepts members from all majors and the past year we have had around 40 members. We have business school students, students in the human sciences college, students in the criminal justice college, and of course students in the school of entrepreneurship.

Our past accomplishments have been to help students succeed in their future endeavors within the retail world. We’re very proud that we provide insight and help on applying for national scholarships. For some scholarships, like the NRF scholarship we have had students make it as finalists and semi-finalist. They were able to win a trip to New York City and were able to network with numerous influential people from the industry. This is all due to AATCC helping provide the information and assistance along the process. In the past we have helped support different philanthropies like The Big Event and Dress for Success. We’re also very proud of the fashion show we put on every fall because it’s an event that brings all different types of students together and allows them an outlet to express their creativity. It also gives them real world experience by giving them an opportunity to work in a large group and learn how to navigate expressing their opinions in this large group. It also gives students numerous opportunities to lead.

Our future plans are to continue with the fashion show in the fall and to attend the Atlanta Mart in the fall as well. We are planning on bringing in more guest speakers and making small trips around Tallahassee to hear from local retailers.

For Fiscal year 2019-2020 budgetary needs, we are in need of funding for our fashion show. This show is a staple for our organization and something students from all different majors love to participate in. It’s an amazing learning experience and

Page 6: S.A.P. Funding Requests - Student Government Associationsga.fsu.edu/PDF/S.A.P.Funding-Requests.pdfCMAA is a club open to any and all college students with an interest in the private

something we look forward to every year. We would use the funds to help provide big things such as lighting and sound equipment and use it for smaller things such as signage. We would also use the scholarship to help fund our Atlanta Mart trip. Atlanta Mart is the country’s largest trade show. We have the opportunity to hear vendors speak and learn about internship opportunities at the Atlanta Mart. The students who attend also get a better knowledge of what vendors are, and how crucial they are for the retail industry. The funding would be used to help lower the cost of the hotel to allow more students to afford this amazing trip.

What is the World Affairs Program?

The Florida State University World Affairs Program (FSU WAP) is a student-run, academic program, housed in the College of Social Sciences. FSU WAP travels around the country and occasionally internationally, to compete in Model United Nations and Crisis Simulation Conferences. FSU WAP is open to all students of all levels and prides itself on having diverse students, from a variety of majors, with a host of interests, all at varying skill levels. The conferences that FSU WAP attends are divided into competitive academic committees in which participants combine public speaking, research, diplomacy, and crisis management skills to best represent their position within the designated body. To ensure that the Florida State Team is the best the university has to offer, FSU WAP holds competitive tryouts which simulate conference

Page 8: S.A.P. Funding Requests - Student Government Associationsga.fsu.edu/PDF/S.A.P.Funding-Requests.pdfCMAA is a club open to any and all college students with an interest in the private

committees in order to select the most talented team for each of the conferences attended. This guarantees the World Affairs Program travels the strongest possible team to each competition, and has the added benefit of ensuring that many students have the opportunity to travel. FSU WAP gives students multiple chances throughout the year to tryout to travel as a team member, encouraging them to grow as delegates and improve their skills.

The leadership structure of FSU WAP is an integral part of running the program smoothly and efficiently. The leadership consists of the Director, their Vice Director, and 4 sub-Assistant Directors who help to manage Involvement, Finance, Programming/Training, and Conference & Logistics. These sub-Assistant Directors are responsible for creating an inclusive and supportive atmosphere for the members, managing funds, improving delegates and their resumes, creating travel arrangements, and coordinating events. FSU WAP also has a faculty advisor who helps the program with academic matters and serves as a liaison between the Director of the Program and the administration of the College of Social Sciences.

For 33 years, FSU WAP has represented Florida State University on the Competitive Model United Nations circuit. FSU WAP has excelled in competition, becoming a well-known facet of the circuit with a reputation for being a force to be reckoned with in the committee room. FSU WAP regularly competes against Ivy League Schools, Military Academies, and other renowned institutions. This circuit of conferences includes but is not limited to: the National Collegiate Security Conference (NCSC) hosted by Georgetown University in Washington, D.C.; UPMUNC hosted by the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; MCMUN hosted by McGill University in Montreal, Quebec; CHOMUN hosted by the University of Chicago in Chicago, Illinois; and UCBMUN, hosted by UC Berkeley in San Francisco, California. FSU WAP has proven itself time and again on this highly competitive circuit, regularly defeating students from the world’s top schools. Since the year 2000, FSU WAP has won thirty-nine best delegation awards and twenty outstanding delegation (second overall)

2

awards at competitive conferences. FSU WAP is proud to have earned Florida State a reputation as a top school, and gained the respect of our conference hosts and competing universities.

Beyond our role as the competitive Model United Nations team on campus, FSU WAP works to maintain Florida State’s worldwide status as an academic leader, and works to further the leadership abilities and international understanding of students on-campus. One example of our commitment to these goals is by hosting an annual Regional Training Conference (RTC), which takes place in Tallahassee each September and is expected to be attended by 125 students. At RTC, FSU students are invited to take part in an on-campus Model United Nations simulation that is led by veteran FSU WAP members who train and mentor new and returning FSU students on what to expect on the Ivy League Circuit. The hosts of the conference are ready and willing to answer questions, and they guarantee that the experience is helpful, engaging, and beneficial to each student. FSU WAP members also help students understand complex national and international topics, as well as the complex interactions of international organizations. RTC also benefits our neighboring schools, and is often attended by: Georgia Tech University, University of Florida, Florida International University, University of Central Florida, and Florida

Page 9: S.A.P. Funding Requests - Student Government Associationsga.fsu.edu/PDF/S.A.P.Funding-Requests.pdfCMAA is a club open to any and all college students with an interest in the private

Agricultural and Mechanical University. This helps build a relationship between these universities and creates a local network of leaders.

Furthermore, FSU WAP holds weekly meetings where any FSU student may come to learn the arts of public speaking, diplomacy, and research techniques. Several Florida State students who have not yet traveled with the team have said that the training and practice they received from FSU WAP meetings has helped them succeed in their classes, develop as public speakers, and mature academically. FSU WAP also holds simulations, which allow any FSU student to practice speaking, and engage in debate about current international issues. These simulations require research and critical thinking by the students who choose to participate, and stimulate problem solving and collaboration by the students. These resources that are available to all serve as a low pressure environment for students to grow and develop vital professional skills.

FSU WAP is a key part of Florida State University, through our connections on-campus and diversity in experiences. Members go out into the world to show that Florida State University is a top-tier school that can compete against and beat the best universities in the world and the brightest students from those schools. The experience and confidence that FSU students gain from participating in the World Affairs Program by attending Model United Nations and Crisis Simulation conferences is dispersed to the remaining student population at FSU, as members commit to enriching our on and off-campus academic community. The Florida State University World Affairs Program is not just another student organization; it is an organization that enables FSU students to develop into the global leaders of tomorrow.

3

Benefits to Florida State University from the World Affairs Program:

1. There is a direct educational benefit to participants in the program. The educational experiences range from those provided by the program on campus to those provided through travel on the competitive circuit. The students who travel are an integral part of providing educational experiences for the campus by sharing their experiences and broad viewpoints with other FSU students and organizations.

2. Participation on the circuit is important for the prestige of the program and Florida State University. By remaining a competitive team, students have the opportunity to compete against Ivy League schools. FSU WAP’s continued success results in increased standing for the University, the students, and the program.

3. The media coverage of the conferences, as well as the instituted ranking system gives Florida State University international recognition as a premier competitor in this field of academic debate and global politics.

4. FSU students create and maintain connections to students and faculty from highly prestigious institutions and universities, giving these FSU students a competitive advantage in pursuing their careers.

5. This program seeks to create professionally minded students who are aware of current international issues and are active in the classroom and on campus. These students are an asset to the program and the University. They create a competitive and committed atmosphere in their academic pursuits and are willing to share their experiences broadly within the University community.

How FSU WAP has Utilized Our Funds Previously:

The 2019-2020 school year was one of immense success for FSU WAP. We, through funding from Student Government and the College of Social Sciences, were able to attend eight conferences. We took four first place team awards and two top ten spots on the circuit this year, speaking to our continual growth and success as a program. We are currently ranked among the Top-10 university Model UN Teams (8th overall) and top two among public universities according to Best Delegate. In addition, FSU WAP is involved in sponsoring on campus events, such as Dance Marathon and Relay for Life. FSU WAP has continually used its funds to facilitate creating a program that is not only successful on the circuit, but provides the appropriate and desired trainings and involvement for its members. We will continue to be committed to the long-standing goals of the program and will continue to use the money appropriated to us by the SAP board to increase our annual successes.

Past Performance 2000-2019 Ranking As Reported By Best Delegate

Since 2011, a company known as Best Delegate has been responsible for ranking and reporting the performance of Collegiate Model United Nations Teams across North America. The World Affairs Program has held a steady climb through the ranks and is proud to announce that we have reached our highest rank as the 8th best team across the North American Continent. FSU WAP ranks higher than several Ivy League Universities such as Yale, and is the second highest ranked public school on the circuit.

Ranking Within Each Conference Attended

As well as basing our success off of Best Delegate ’s ranking system, FSU WAP tracks how we place per every conference we attend. Placing per conference is based off of a point system. Each award is equivalent to a certain amount of points which is then added together and divided by the number of students brought. In the case of certain conferences such as NCSC, the longer a conference has been running, the more competitive the competition becomes which is reflected in decreasing conference performance but increasing ranking.

ranks all Model United Nations Conferences on an Eight Tier system. For the 2019-2020 school year, WAP plans to attend:

Tier One : HNMUN - Harvard National Model United Nations (Cambridge MA, Feb 2020). Tier Three : UPMUNC - University of Pennsylvania Model United Nations Conference (Philadelphia PA, Nov. 2019); NCSC - National Collegiate Security Conference at Georgetown University (Washington D.C., Oct. 2019)

Tier Five : VICS - Virginia International Crisis Simulation at the University of Virginia (Charlottesville VA, March 2020); &MUN - William & Mary Model United Nations (Williamsburg VA, April 2020). Tier Six : MUNE - Model United Nations at Emory (Atlanta GA, Feb. 2020); UNCMUNC - University of North Carolina Model United Nations Conference (Chapel Hill NC, Nov. 2019). Tier Seven : FLCS - Florida Crisis Simulation at the University of Florida (Gainesville FL, Feb. 2020).

The chart that follows outlines WAP’s expected spending for the 2019-2020 fiscal year. Notice that hotel costs are not included. Hotel costs are covered by “Conference Fees” which is asked of every student who travels. Also travel costs are not included for MUNE or FLCS because both conferences are within a short enough distance that our team feels comfortable carpooling. This chart also does not reflect the amount of money necessary to host our Regional Training Conference or our End of the Year Banquet.

The World Affairs Program also puts on our Regional Training Conference (RTC) in order to train new delegates and prepare them to compete at ranked conferences. We invite Model UN Teams from every school in the South East in order to diversify our attendance, and therefore, we try to provide an experience as realistic as possible. Our conference consists of six committees and in each, we award one Gavel to the Best Delegate as a first place award. Gavels are a tradition on the Model UN Circuit and are therefore most appropriate. Our Budget for RTC is as follows:

Type of Expense Quantity Cost per Item Cost Conference Materials 150 $5.00 $750.00 Committee Awards* 6 $50.00 $300.00 Total $1050.00

There is no delegate fee for participating members . Budget Request

The estimates provided in this request are for the 2019-2020 fiscal year. These costs are an estimation for the upcoming year using past traveling experiences as well as current hotel and airfare rates. This budget request accounts for the previous cuts to FSU WAP’s operating budget, which amounted to a 66-percent cut between the 2006-2007 school year, the 2012-2013 school year and in the 2015-2016 school year a 44-percent cut, but continues to contain the optimistic spending priorities of the program for this coming year. The FSU administration originally funded FSU WAP and other Student Academic Programs, but this was eliminated from the budget in August 2007. To save FSU WAP and other SAPs from extinction, SGA stepped in and promised “to provide the Student Academic Programs with funding . . . at a level sufficient to maintain the continued existence and strength” of these programs (Resolution 53, 60th Senate). FSU WAP will continue to seek permanent and sustainable funding from other sources on and off campus. In the meantime FSU WAP relies on SGA as its primary source of funding. The continued existence and effectiveness of FSU WAP as an international debate organization directly depends on the level of support provided by SGA.

For the 2019-2020 year, FSU WAP is requesting $10,000 in the Travel Category.

This amount would be sufficient to cover our conference registration costs, and to help offset the cost of travel. By providing our registration costs, SGA will have helped us to cover the largest and most critical

expense our team encounters. If WAP has leftover funds after paying Registration Fees, the remaining funds would be used towards paying for Plane Tickets to Philadelphia and Washington D.C.

Student Government Association Florida State University

FSU Student Government Association Leadership:

It is my great pleasure to write a letter recognizing our excellent, nationally ranked Florida State University World Affairs Program (WAP) as a Student Academic Program. This outstanding student group is a core component of the college’s Get More Than a Degree programming, and it is the college’s honor to support this program.

WAP is a student-run academic program housed in the College of Social Sciences and Public Policy. WAP members travel around the country, and occasionally internationally, to compete in Model United Nations and Crisis Simulation Conferences. WAP is open to students of all levels and prides itself on having diverse students from a variety of majors at varying skill levels.

WAP cannot be successful without continued SGA support, however. SGA funds allow the group to reach a wider student audience, amplify their impact on campus, and compete more successfully on the national and international stage.

Feel free to contact me if you have any issues or questions concerning this letter of recognition at [email protected] or 850-644-5488. I look forward to our continued partnership in support of this outstanding student organization.

Dr. Tim Chapin Dean, College of Social Sciences and Public Policy Professor, Department of Urban & Regional Planning

MEMORANDUM

June 13, 2018 Student Government Association Dr. Michael D. Hartline, Dean Case Competition Club

It is my pleasure to express the support of the College of Business as a sponsor of the FSU Case Competition Club. The Case Competition Club is a student academic program that gives all Florida State students an opportunity to engage in solving some of the toughest challenges in the business world today. The club provides a space for students to expand their interests, sharpen their skills, and learn more about the problems and tests that are faced by business leaders and their teams daily.

This club and its members have earned international acclaim and proudly represent our university wherever they go. By having this organization, we open more doors for students to engage within our campus, explore beyond it, and achieve when they leave.

As dean of the College of Business, I am proud to offer my support to the Case Competition Club in their request for funding.

June 13, 2019 Omar Urbina Student Body Treasurer Student Government Association Florida State University Dear Mr. Urbina: I am pleased to provide this letter of endorsement for the Florida State University Forensics Program’s application for support from the FSU Student Government Association for 2019-2020. The Forensics program provides very valuable educational experiences for team participants, and is open to all students at FSU. While the program is organized in and supported by the School of Communication, it is a service to the whole university community. Only one student in 2018-2019 was a major in the School of Communication. The School of Communication has hired a faculty member who will serve as Director of Forensics beginning in August 2018. This will be a great boost for the program, and we anticipate that even more students will participate this year with this leadership and support. We also hosted a successful Debate Reunion, which took place April 12-14, 2019 to celebrate 70 years of Debate at FSU. My office works with the School of Communication to plan, support, and supervise coaching and tournament travel for the Forensics Program each year. We see this program as a valuable contribution to students and to our larger community, and key to leadership development. Thank you for considering this application, and please feel free to contact me if you have any questions. Sincerely,

To provide a sense of the level of competition, other universities that attended these debate tournaments included Columbia, Clemson, Duke, Ecole de Guerre, Emory University, University of Florida, University of Georgia, Gonzaga University, University of Miami, University of Michigan, Notre Dame, University of Texas, Wake Forrest University, Yale and more. Each team gets a minimum of 6-8 rounds of direct competition at every tournament and can get up to 10-14 rounds depending how far they progress. Highlights are listed in the preface above.
