Saoban Village Handicrafts
Saoban is a social business that works with traditional
artisans to preserve and promote Lao village crafts. We
work under the principles of fair trade in order to create
employment opportunities for villagers, especially
women, and reduce poverty.
In 2005 PADETC, a Lao non-government organization,
started working with small groups of weavers, providing
them
with technical guidance for product improvement and
small loans to expand their production. Soon, other
weaver groups approached PADETC for startup capital
and help with marketing and business development. The
result was Saoban, which means “village” in Lao. Saoban
represents a dynamic new opportunity to showcase a
range of ancient crafts.
“ When you purchase a Saoban product you provide an income for the artisanand you support and empower rural
communities ”
“ Saoban now works with over 350 artisans in 17
producer groups across 7 provinces
of Laos ”

Come and see our range which includes beautifully
hand woven silk and cotton textiles using natural dyes,
bamboo wares, silver jerwellery, bags and accessories.
PADETCPADETC works to improve the livelihood of Lao communities in a just and sustainable way.
NATURE DYE From the local material
Indigo blue is made from the leaves and shoots of the “ Kham ”
plant, which grows in many areas in Laos. Making the dye is an
art that involves fermentation of the “ Kham ” and keeping the
mixture in air-tight jars at the required temperature.
Insect resin known as “ Stick lac ” is used to make red and pink.
These are very complicated colors to create. The silk need to be
soaked in gypsum before dyeing and the dye requires adding
ash and tamarind water.
Indigo blue
Red and Pink
Onion skins are boiled to create on orange dye. For
strong colour the fibers are dyed many times.
Orange
yellow dye is made from the wood shavings of the jackfruit tree
Yellow
Grey is made by soaking and fermenting the Mak Gua, a Lao
fruit, Fibres are dyed several times in a cold dye to acheive the
right depth of grey.
