John Conover, PlumpJack Winery, General Manager

Longtime wine industry executive John Conover is General Manager of PlumpJack Winery and Partner in CADE Winery. He helped focus the direction of PlumpJack on Cabernet Sauvignon, the varietal that achieves unparalleled expression in the Oakville region of Napa Valley. The results have been high critical acclaim for our Estate and Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon wines, including many 90+ scores and Wine Enthusiast's des-ignation of the 2001 Estate Cabernet Sauvignon as "The Number One Wine in the World." PlumpJack Reserve Chardonnay is a regular favorite at the White House. Conover also pioneered the use of screw-cap bottle toppings for high-end wines, a decision he believes best protects the wine and underlines PlumpJack's approachability.

"As far as Cabernet Sauvignon vineyards go, it just doesn't get any bet-ter than Oakville," says Conover. "We have our own interpretation of the classic Oakville expression. Our wines have bold fruit character, rich complexity, and an inviting, easy-to-enjoy style."

Conover joined PlumpJack Winery in 1999, after holding sales, market-ing, and management positions with Grgich Hills Cellar, Monticello Cellars, and Lockwood Vineyard. He serves on the Board of Directors of The Napa County Land Trust and Napa Valley Grape Growers.

Ridge’s iconic Monte Bello Proprietary Red (no lon-ger called Cabernet Sauvignon) is one of the can-didates for the longest-lived Bordeaux blend made in California. Even vintages from the late sixties and early seventies are still vibrant wines. The winery owns just over 100 acres of Cabernet Sauvignon vines.

"The just-bottled 2010 Monte Bello combines pure structure and power in a rich, full-bodied style for this wine. Waves of dark red fruit, crushed rocks, flowers, mint and grilled herbs wrap around the long, insistent finish. Always classy, the 2010 Monte Bello impresses for its impeccable balance. 3L Nicolas Catena Zapata, 2008

Nicolas Catena Zapata is made from a meticulous vine selection in the best lots of the Catena family’s estate vineyards. These Zapata vines are carefully hand tended and produce extremely low yields. The grapes are micro-fermented in new French oak bar-riques and the wine is then aged for 24 months in new French oak. Nicolas Catena Zapata 2008 has an intense dark violet color with bluish-black tones. Complex wine: super-ripe aromas of black cherry, dark chocolate and licorice, enlivened by minerals, violet, pepper and herbs. Then penetrating, sharply delineated and impressively concentrated, with a seri-ous back bone supporting its very fresh currant and mineral flavors; the vibrant, echoing finish suggests that this wine will have even more to say in a couple of years.

We could not resist combinging these two Southern Rhone Valley gems into one lot.

Chateauneuf du Pape rarely gets better than those from Chateau Beaucastel.

Just six of the Les Pallieres bottles were import-ed to the United States. Les Pallieres is the famous Gigondas estate owned by the Brunier family of Vieux Telegraphe in Chateauneuf-du-Pape and American importer Kermit Lynch. Vintage 2009 was an all-time great, producing wines of power, depth and profound elegance. While their "Terrasse du Diable" (from high eleva-tion Grenache vines planted on the "terraces of the Devil") is absolutely delicious right now, it also has tremendous capability to age and this six-liter bottle has decades of life ahead of it.

Celebrating his 40th Anniversary of his Sommelier Riedel glasses, we are honored to have Georg Riedel with us again this year.

A past receipient of our annual SFWC Honorary Wine Achievement Award, Georg presents us today with a unique six-liter Riedel decanter that he designed especially for us.

A decanter of this stature needs wine of the same and Kenwood has provided a 6-liter of their Artist's Series Cabernet 2001, which marks the 27th vintage in the Artist Series Collection. The finest lots of Cabernet Sauvignon were selected from hillside vineyards in Sonoma Valley and Dry Creek Valley and then blended with a small amount of Malbec. The wine spent 29 months in small French oak barrels and one more year in the bottle before release. Polish Born Artist Tamara de Lempicka lends a quintessential expression of the Art Deco style "Femme Bleue a la Guitare" to grace the label.
