John Albrecht created Good Life Ceram-ics knowing that a pinch pot had saved

his life. John explains, “The short of my story is that I had been suffering with anxiety and depression for several years and found the key to my recovery in Kathryn McBride’s beginning ceramics class at Cabrillo College. After several psychiatrists, layers of medications and many other attempts for calm, it was after a ceramics class that it hit me. Walking out of the studio that day, I was broad-sided by the peace I had lost and so very much wanted. No anxiety. No ruminating. No labored breathing. Calm. On that day I decided if I could feel that way from making a clay pot, I could certainly feel that way doing the other things in my life. It was hard and took time, but I did it. I survived.”John soon realized he wanted to create

a space where people could just walk-in and make a simple tray. No lessons, no

classes, no expectations, and with very little commitment of time and money. And the name of this space came to John right away. Good Life Ceramics! It had made for a good life for him, and he knew it could offer the same for others. John now knows that we are all born creative. In his TED Talk, David Kelley talks about build-ing your creative confidence. He talks about

overcoming the fear of judgment that most of us feel. Once we experience

our creativity, we have more con-fidence in our lives. He says with this confidence, we make better deci-sions, consider more options, com-municate better and we find com-fort knowing that we are creative.

Good Life Ceramics is a welcoming -make-your-own ceramic art studio.

Their doors are open to all from sea-soned ceramic artists to first-timers. With

guided projects for walk-ins, a fully equipped studio for members and the option to reserve the studio for events, individuals are able to ex-perience the beauty of clay. And it is there that John and the staff at GLC strive to realize their mission. “To enlighten and nurture the creative confidence inherent in all.” For more informa-tion visit: www.goodlifeceramics.com

16 Tips to Get Great Photos at Your Next Event

If you follow Event Santa Cruz or Santa Cruz Waves, you’ve likely seen photog-rapher and designer Jules Holdsworth’s photos. She’s one of those rare people who see the extraordinary in the ordi-nary and put people at ease when they’re being photographed.

I asked Holdsworth how small business owners can take great event photos and how to share and store them. Here are her best tips:

1. Get photos of people having a good time, whatever that means. You can pho-tograph a couple, or three or four girl-friends together, or anything else, just as long as everyone looks like they’re having fun.

2. Know the type of photos you want. Do you want candid shots or grip and grins? Sometimes people want to make a funny face, which can be fun, depending on the event.

3. For photos of the venue and surround-ings, focus in on details. Try to see things other people don’t and make people see things in a new way.

4. Get the shots that aren’t obvious to other people. When Holdsworth edits her photographs, if it’s a photo anyone could have taken, it’s a throwaway photo for her. “It’s in the way you see things,” she says, “and I’ve always seen things dif-ferently.”

5. Take two steps closer. “People are al-ways further away than you realize,” Holdsworth says. “You can’t get too close.”

6. To get good candid shots, shoot peo-ple from far away and zoom in with your lens.

7. Try to get people in their element. “When people are in their element,” says Holdsworth, “they’re all smiles because they’re doing something they love.”

8. Make the people you’re photograph-ing comfortable. Get them talking about something they like by asking them questions about their family, children or something that makes people happy. It helps them to loosen up.

9. Bad lighting is a common mistake people make with event photos. Use a flash that bounces the light so it’s not di-rectly on the subject.

10. Don’t have your subjects looking into the sun or they’ll be squinting in the photo.

11. Look around your subjects to make sure there’s no plant cropping out of their head or something distracting in the background.

12. Have people say yoga instead of cheese. “Saying cheese gives you a really cheesy grin,” says Holdsworth.

13. Take multiple photos when there are three or four subjects because someone will always have their eyes closed. Take a few shots to make sure you get a good one of everybody.

14. Use event photos to help promote fu-ture events. After you’ve photographed several of your events, you have a library of photos to choose from.

15. Collect your photos in a folder on your computer and organize them by date and event so it’s easy to find what you’re looking for.

16. Put your photos in four places: In-stagram, Twitter, Facebook and on your website. Put a few on social media, and more on the website. From your social media, give people a link to the website to see more.

Stop! Don’t Spend Any More On Marketing Until You Read This…SlingShOT TO SUcceSS

by Bryce Root

On a regular basis, we listen as new business owners share how they ran a couple of print

or radio ads to help generate foot traffic and tell the world they’ve opened their doors. The story usually ends with the fact that they weren’t able to determine whether these marketing strategies worked or not, but they do know that they spent too much of their marketing budget. In today’s article, we want to provide you steps to ensure that you are properly approaching your market-ing strategy before your extra time and budget are gone.

We intend to give you the bottom line on best practices and when it comes to “getting your name out there,” we offer ten essential steps for you to follow. Keep in mind that we are making the as-sumption that you have already conducted a de-cent amount of market research, as well as brand development. With that said, here we go:

1. What are the business goals and milestones that you want to reach?

2. In many cases, sales and foot traffic are top choices, so you will need to determine your core product(s) and/or services(s).

3. Who is your target audience for these prod-ucts and services? (Please refer to our column in the August 23, 2016 Santa Cruz Record.)

4. Write down all of the places, activities, hob-bies, likes, dislikes and the overall day-to-day lifestyle that would be part of a typical week for your target audience.

5. Create a realistic marketing budget, don’t worry, a lot can be done with close to nothing.

6. Figure out which marketing vehicles will help you reach your target audience during a given week, i.e. events, strategic partnerships, adver-tising, PR, etc.

7. Form a marketing plan that outlines the specific marketing vehicles you will us, which months you’ll use them and how much they will cost.

8. Investigate each of these strategies and price them out to ensure your estimated costs are realistic.

9. For each marketing vehicle, create an action plan where you drill down into the details of what needs to happen to make them work effi-ciently and effectively.

10. Always build a tracking component into your marketing to determine what’s working and what isn’t.

We realize this involves some work, but your efforts will certainly pay off. You may very well determine that your marketing can reach your target audience with very little money, which could be contradictory to the cold calls you re-ceive on a regular basis. One of our top tips is to make sure you’re always tracking your marketing, be sure your employees are doing this for each and every customer. If you need assistance developing your own marketing program, we would enjoy the opportunity to simplify this process for you, provide an objective perspective and help make great things happen for your business. n

NOTICE TO POTENTIAL BIDDERS: If you are considering bidding on this property lien, you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a trustee auction. You will

be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed, and, if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you may call (916) 939-0772 or visit this Internet Web site www.nationwideposting.com, using the file number assigned to this case 7789. Information about postponements that are very short in duration or that occur close in time to the scheduled sale may not immediately be reflected in the telephone information or on the Internet Web site. The best way to verify postpone-ment information is to attend the scheduled sale. 7/20/17 GOLDEN WEST FORECLOSURE SERVICE, INC., as Trustee 611 Veterans Blvd., Suite 206, Redwood City, CA 94063-1401 (650) 369-2150 (Phone), (916) 939-0772 TRUSTEE’S SALE INFORMATION Michael D.
