    BOARD PRESIDENTS LETTER

We have a wonderful week of entertainment, food

and fun planned this year. I am confident

there is something for everyone here at the Fair to enjoy. From local and headline entertainment to a wide variety of fair food, to the local handcrafted entries there is fun

    and enjoyment around every corner.

I consider the Santa Cruz County Fair a

showcase of the diverse talents of our community.

All this is made possible by the year round work of our small and dedicated staff and many hundreds of talented volunteers. This year has been very busy with many improvements to the grounds and supporting infrastructure.

If you are here at the Fair, have a wonderful time and come back again later this week. If you are contemplating coming to the Fair there is no time like the present.

    Sincerely,

DON DIETRICH, PresidentSanta Cruz County Fair Board

I was going to start my annual note to you all by trying to list the repairs, upgrades and improvements here at the grounds since last years Fair. But I quickly started thinking about the number of dedicated volunteers and staff who are working so hard to maintain and improve this amazing community resource and treasure. All I can say is a humble Thank you. Now, on to the Fair!

Our annual signature event will run Wednesday, September 16 through Sunday, September 20. Volunteers are creating many new displays and exhibits tied to this years theme,

Country Nights and Carnival Lights. New for the kids is Twinkle Time, a high energy get up and move stage show. Youll find Master Hypnotist Michael Mezmer of course,

and new favorites Captain Jack Spareribs and the Turkey Stampede. I am also excited to announce that Wednesday night is the premiere of Monster Trucks

and Motorcycles in the Race Track, and this year as part of our entertainment package it is a free show.

What we started in 2013 as a little experiment turned into a big hit so again this year we will have Valet Parking available for $20 during the entire Fair.

Drive into the marked lane behind the Heritage Hall and our volunteers will guide you. With Valet service you will have an opportunity to purchase fair admissions or redeem your passes at a special entrance between the Heritage Hall and the Floriculture Building. Not only is it convenient but part of your fee helps fund local nonprofit organizations.

I hope you will come out and help me thank the many creative volunteers and employees of the Santa Cruz County Fair. And while youre here try out some of our new food items such as Indian Fry Bread, monster jalapeno corn dogs and the new Funnel Cake stand. We have also expanded our carnival lot and added new rides. Actually, like I said last year, when you are at the Fair it is almost impossible not to have a whole lot fun!

    The(aka Ag Hort)

T he Agriculture/Horticulture Department is looking forward to enjoying Country Nights and Carnival Lights, at the 2015 Fair. There will be new exhibitors and lots of innovative educational hands-on discovery and activities for youth and adults alike.

Whiskey Hill Farms will celebrate their first year as an exhibitor and they will help Fair

patrons learn about their regenerative agriculture practices. Whiskey Hill Farms feels that regenerative agriculture goes beyond organic and sustainable farming, as it is a process that provides for continuous soil rejuvenation. Come and learn about how they accomplish this by using helpful pests, capturing rain water, doing top soil creation programs, building enhancing populations of micro-

organisms into the soil, utilizing advanced crop rotation programs and permaculture inter-crop design. Whiskey Hill Farms chose their name to tie back into the bootlegging history of the very hill where their farm is located today on the north side of Watsonville in the Corralitos foothills.

WHISKEY HILL FARMS MICHAEL WACHTEL, Co-founder and CEO

and JACOB FREEPONS, Director of Operations of Whiskey Hill

Farms with Allen Morgan (middle), Founder of Santa Cruz Heirloom Seed.

  • Cecilie Siegel and her Agriculture Detection Canine, Conan, from the Contra Costa County Department of Agriculture, will be on hand Wednesday and Thursday to demonstrate what they do at work each day to protect all of us from agricultural pests being shipped to California via post offices, FedEx and airports. These pests can be in boxes, crates or luggage and can potentially harm the agriculture industry.

Fair favorites are returning to help round out the Harvest Building this year.Lakeside Organic Gardens will once again be presenting a variety of their organic produce. The California Rare Fruit Growers, Monterey Bay Chapter, return to display their rare heirloom apples.

Santa Cruz County Farm Bureau will wow you with their exhibit tying into the theme, Country Nights and Carnival Lights.Monterey Mushrooms, Ocean Mist Farms, Second Harvest Food Bank, Driscoll Strawberry Associates and Santa Cruz County Mosquito and Vector Control all have something special for Fair visitors

Returning this year will be Allen Morgan, founder and steward of Santa Cruz Heirloom Seed and distributor for Seed Saver Exchange. His display will be about old time medicine and will include medicinal heirloom herbs and flowers and how they help the body, both internally and externally. This exhibit will be an education in self-health and warrants a visit. Allen will be selling his Seed Saver Exchange Seeds from the Amish country of Decorah, Iowa, so Fair visitors can grow their own healthful herbs and flowers. And he will be giving away over 1,000 free lettuce starts.

    Youth

T he Youth Organization participants are busy throughout the year, not just at Fairtime. Scouts, both Girl and Boy Scout troops, have been working on leadership skills, badges, camps and community service.

The FFA Chapters at Soquel, Watson-ville and North Salinas High Schools are helping students add to their knowledge as well as to the community through their Ag Mechanics and Ag Science Programs. In order to accomplish both of these goals they work through three discipline areas starting with the traditional academic classroom and a grounding in theory and fundamentals.

The students then focus on Leadership and Community Service. This broad cat-egory of interests includes environmental studies, marketing, research, entrepre-

neurship, public speaking, construc-tion, engineering, diesel mechanics, sustainable agriculture, the Guide Dog Puppy Program and even a pantry project that helps local fam-ilies. Students go on to earn profi-ciency awards and certifications in agriculture and animal husbandry to name a few.

Finally, students move into super-vised agricultural experiences by getting out into the field or on the ranch. In summary, after the theory and practice, these future leaders get hands on, common sense, prac-tical experience.

The 4-H Youth Development Program offers many ways to improve public speaking, leadership and citizenship skills. Members learn to achieve goals and feel proud about their accomplish-ments. One of the ways local Scotts Valley 4-H members Galina Cantey and Cade Gillen used their leadership skills was to earn their Emerald Star Achievement Award and at the same time benefit-ed the Santa Cruz County Fairgrounds. Galina and Cade organized volun-teers to plant trees and shrubs at the Fairgrounds RV Park. Not all 4-H is work, there is plenty

of room for fun and learning. Galina along with a leader started a folk guitar project for members of the club. Galina also started a Ukulele Project for club members who have performed through-out Scotts Valley and Santa Cruz. During this years Fair the Scotts Valley 4-H Club musicians will be performing periodically throughout the Fair.

  • Heritage Hog

Last year the main well for the Fairgrounds collapsed, and Heritage Hog donations funded the repair of old water pipes and installation of a new well pump. A computer monitoring system was also installed to inform the Fairgrounds of future water problems as well as water usage. This new watering system showed that the current water tanks only store enough water to supply the Fairgrounds with 3 hours during peak demand. This years Heritage Hog Fundraising Program will focus on raising funds for storage tanks.

    TheFundraiser

    13

The Santa Cruz County Fair Heritage Foundations (SCCFHF) Annual Heritage Hog Fundraiser is underway. Each year, the Foundation chooses an applicant to raise a Heritage Hog that is sold at the Junior Livestock Auction during the Santa Cruz County Fair and Horse Show, this year to be held on Saturday, September 19, 2015. The community has an opportunity to give a tax-deductible gift to the Heritage Hog to support much needed improvements on the fairgrounds. Janell Moules has been selected to raise this years Heritage Hog and will receive a $1,000 scholarship for her efforts.

The Santa Cruz County Fair is home to many youth activities in our community including 4-H, FFA, Junior Fair Board, Junior Livestock, little league, horsemanship, youth exhibit programs, 2nd Saturday on the Farm, and more. The SCCFHF is proud that all of these youth oriented programs help children learn the responsibility, accountability, leadership and teamwork needed to participate in such community projects. The Santa Cruz County Fairgrounds is a unique venue for our youth to showcase their accomplishments.

A ll Home Arts entries are judged using the Danish system of judging which means they are judged against a set standard, rather than against each other like in the American system of judging. Therefore, if an entry is of blue ribbon quality, it will receive a first place ribbon. This can result in the awarding of more than one first place in a section. However, if

no entries are of blue ribbon quality, judges do not need to award any first place ribbons.

Items are judged by paid experts in their particular field. Judges come from as far as Sacramento and are quite serious about their work.

They use pre-determined criteria to judge the quality of an entry,

recording their comments on judging sheets to provide feedback.Judges are encouraged to give complimentary and constructive comments geared toward helping the entrant to better their skills. It serves as a great way to receive helpful feedback and edge even closer to joining the sea of blue ribbons to be found throughout the department.

    A Look at the Logic

Just how do they decide which of the hundreds of entries filling the Crosetti Building deserve a blue ribbon? It may come as a surprise to some, but there really is a very

    organized system in place.

The racing pigs return to the beautiful lawn near the Livestock Area, bringing cheering crowds to the Santa Cruz County Fair.

These prestigious porkers have appeared in hundreds of television news reports and over 500 newspaper articles, and they are returning to the Santa Cruz Fair for three appearances daily. Although the Alaska State Fair has been their home base for many years, they have a soft spot for Santa Cruz County and have made

many appearances here since their debut race in 1988. They have returned more than 25 times since!

Two of the main ingredients for the All-Alaskan Racing Pig shows are comedy and competition. These perky pigs are natural hams, so to speak, and they have brought home the bacon at shows all over the western United States and Alaska.

Another important ingredient of the race is cookies, which is the treat that the pigs are racing to

win. Each race only lasts about six seconds (these pigs are fast!) and each 20-minute show features four races.

The pigs live better than most. They reside in an air-conditioned trailer, eat well and get a fresh cedar or pine bedding change twice daily.

Watch to see which one of the All-Alaskan Racing Pigs tries to hog the limelight at races held every day at the Santa Cruz County Fair.

I f its been some time since you have had a little one in the house or that is something you have yet to experience, you might want to plan on being in Paddy Smith Park on Saturday during the Fair. The Diaper Derby/Toddler Contest kicks off, or rather crawls off, starting at 1 PM. These slow motion races for the prize begin orderly enough but as soon as the whistle blows an entertaining chaos breaks out. The kids are cute and their parents are entertaining. Some of the competitors head straight for the finish line, at least in the beginning, but most wander off when they spot something far more interesting than dad jiggling the car keys on the other side of the mat.The derby has its roots in the celebrations held in pioneer communities and was a

part of the Santa Cruz Fair in the late 1800s and early 1900s. Fair Board of Director Loretta Estrada brought the event back to the Fair and it grows in popularity each year. While the Kentucky Derby calls itself the fastest two minutes in sport, the Fair derby is the slowest two minutes. But way more fun!

Rocking with orange pigtails out, the kids pop-rock stage show Twinkle Time will debut at the 2015 Santa Cruz County Fair.Starring Twinkle, sporting her signature bright orange pigtails, the show features her two best friends; Happy, a clumsy and shy bookworm that loves science, and Lil Hoopz, who is blissfully aloof and loves anything sports or competitive. The trio performs wearing wacky colored clothing and puts on a show that will get kids and parents

jumping to their feet to dance and sing along.Twinkle Time is a high energy educational and bilingual pop concert for kids, Twinkle explains, Parents love it too because the music is so fun and catchy, people love to get up and dance along! What makes this pop group stand out is the importance of learning while having fun. All the songs are pop-rock related, but all about teaching a positive educational message,

Twinkle said. She added, We sprinkle a few bilingual phrases, English and Spanish, throughout the songs. The kids are having fun but also learning a cool message.Younger children will learn coordination through Twinkles signature dance moves as they Move and Groove Twinkle Time Style. Twinkle Time will perform three shows on the Tank House Stage all five days of the fair.

Its new, its exciting, its a free show, and it kicks off the 2015 Santa Cruz County Fair with a roar! Monster Trucks and Motorcycles will fill the Race Track on Wednesday night, September 16, starting at 8 PM. This opening night motorsport event brings back the thrill of huge trucks and daredevil motorcycles all going air born. And there is a special connection for the Fair, the monster trucks are the passion of Watsonville resident Kelvin Ramer.Ramer got his first pickup truck in high school, and he would take it to the local sand pits and play. Ramer says hed drive through water, over jumps, get sideways, and just have

fun. He was the first at his school to put a lift and big Super Swamper tires on his truck. After high school, he moved to Arizona to attend Universal Technical Institute. While there Ramer competed in student drag races and also did his first truck pull. After graduation he moved back to California and started going 4-wheeling with local off-road clubs. Ramer says that he has been to most of the off-road spots in California, including the Rubicon, Hollister Hills and Pismo, and participated in annual events like Mud-In-Yer-Eye. He continued competing in more truck pulls and also a few mud bogs. Ramer has raced 80cc Shifter Karts, and

earned a Kart track championship in 2000. How did he get hooked on big trucks? Well to hear him explain it, The first time my wife and I saw a Monster Jam truck, we thought it looked like a lot of fun! He added, In 1984, we started buying parts and building a Monster Jam truck of our own. After a series of setbacks Ramer tried for the third time and luck was with him. We saved, bought parts and built the Monster Jam in our spare time. The Monster Jam truck took 7 years to complete, from 1997 to 2004. Our first Monster Jam show was Anaheim in January, 2005.

aise em up, Raise em up, Raise em up high! will ring throughout the Fairgrounds Thursday night as country music artist, Austin Webb, performs at the 2015 Santa

Cruz County Fair.Hailing from South Carolina, Webb launched into the spotlight after winning

a local song writing competition. He moved to Nashville after a bad break-up, and his winning-demo reached the hands of Grammy award-winning producer Bryon Gallimore who offered him a publishing deal. In 2012 he released his debut single Its All Good and the following year released his second single Slip On By (2013) which hit the Billboard Top 40 Singles list. Webb was named One To Watch in 2013 by Nash Country Weekly which wrote, Its one thing to be a gifted writer, another to be a talented

singer, and even another to be a dynamic performer. Combine them all with a personality and sense of humor that engages everyone in the room, and stardom has to be around the corner.

His most recent singles include Raise Em Up (2014) and All Country on You (2015).

I have a guiding philosophy on trying to put together the kind of Fair the community looks forward to attending explained manager Dave Kegebein, Each year we try and add something new into the mix. New rides, a different entertainment lineup, new attractions and exhibits, and my personal favorite, new Fair food booths!Fair food ranks as one of the top reasons the county comes to the Fair and 2015 wont disappoint. Fair foodies are just going to have to come out to find out all that has been added but heres a little taste.
