POLICE priorities during the Fifa World Cup™ have raised many questions.
While the greatest sporting showpiece has been one big jol so far, do they really have to go hard on roadside fl ag sellers?
Yes, we all love a city where effective law enforcement prevails. And indeed, the roadsiders are breaking municipal street trading by-laws and should face the might of the law. The truth is that residents have for years pleaded with law enforcement agencies to deal with illegal traders.
But there is another school of thought here; the World Cup is upon us. The roadsiders have been selling fl ags of participating countries and other supporters’ items since the turn of the year. And theirs don’t hit the pocket.
In fact, they have always traded there, long before the World Cup kicked off, and will continue to do so after the fi nal whistle.
How then, and when, did people providing a good service and earning an honest living suddenly become a target, so much so that armed policemen take to the roads in trucks and confi scate their wares? Is it because we now have global football fans among us? If so, does it make it right?
Some fans will not be able to show their true colours, courtesy of the lawmen, when the pride of South Africa whips Uruguay in Pretoria on Wednesday evening.
It will be interesting to see if the zero tolerance approach to roadsiders – and the ‘ladies of the night’ who were ordered into a police truck in Illovo the other night – will continue after 11 July. The solution rests with allocating the informal traders a site to conduct their business, and monitoring what they sell not arresting them.
But surely national fl ags during the World Cup cannot be that offensive?

Five employees were inside the offi ce when three other employees ran in, followed by a man with a fi rearm. KATE HENRYNOISE may impact an area within 300m of the Heli Air Sandton project at Sandown high school.
This was one of the fi ndings of the noise and basic assessment documents that have fi nally been released to the public.
Ongoing reports by the Chronicle have detailed the proposal to develop a 33m² helipad at the school in order to supply service between Sandton City and OR Tambo International Airport. These fl ights could be increased to offer a service between Pretoria and Hartbeespoort Dam as well as Dainfern and Fourways, with full operation expected to see up to 30 fl ights a day.
Previously, helicopters were forced to stop using the school grounds after residents complained about the noise, one
of the main bones of contention around the new project. Other worries included safety, the devaluing of properties and increased traffi c in the area.
The report admits that currently noise levels in the area - already high - would be impacted by the project, infl uencing an area within 300m of the activity.
According to the report several mitigating actions could be taken to limit this impact, including the ‘Fly Neighbourly’ programme, adequately trained pilots, fewer fl ights per day, making use of a quieter helicopter and constructing a wall or building between the school and the helipad.

CHRONICLE REPORTERIN a rush to join the excitement at Innesfree Park, fans have been parking on the M1 South and North to watch the 2010 Fifa World Cup™ matches and entertainment at the Sandton Fifa Fan Fest.
From 13 June, cars that park on highways or on the side of off and on ramps will be
impounded and released from Metro police for R15 000.
To avoid this situation, fans should use the park and walk facilities for Innesfree Park at Rautenabauch Square in Wynberg or in Marlboro at the corner of 8th and Old Pretoria roads.
ABED AHMEDMINIBUS taxis saved the day for World Cup spectators in Sandton stranded by Sandton Metro buses.
The neighbouring Alexandra Taxi Association lined up on different roads in Sandton to ferry fans to the Westgate transport hub and Soccer City for the opening match. The transport arrangements for spectators from Sandton were shambolic as hundreds of fans wandered the streets like lost sheep.
The fans had no idea where to go as the City of Johannesburg’s initial transport plan with Sandton Metro buses failed miserably.
“There were a number of bus stops but not a bus in sight. We haven’t seen any Sandton Metro buses this morning,” said angry fan Mitch Breedekamp.
Both foreign and local fans who depended on the prepared transport arrangements were furious at the lack of signs to indicate bus stops.
“I travelled up from Durban to be here. I parked my car at the mall and now I’m walking around with my wife. It’s absolutely embarrassing to leave everyone lost like this. No I’m resorting to taking a minibus taxi to the game,” said spectator Calvin Kisten.
Fifa volunteers present declined to comment but appeared to be only helpful to accredited people. The situation remained the same at Soccer City and Ellis Park after the games.
LOC spokesman Jermaine Craig indicated that an urgent investigation had been launched.

THE announcement by the city council that former taxi bosses will now own 100 percent of the bus operating company, Clidet, that will run and control the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) Rea Vaya for phase 1A, is good news.
But the fact that city council and the new owners are reluctant to disclose the fi ner details concerning how much they stand to benefi t from this business leaves a big question mark.
One can only hope that this is a good business deal that won’t turn sour soon, due to some bosses surrendering their taxis to the City of Joburg in exchange for shares in the company. Another concern is that no one has mentioned anything about who is going to be in charge of what, when and how they are going to take the bus company to greater heights.
Commuters can only hope that the local authority really means what it says and has done extensive research on this deal hailed as an historic milestone.
Commuters expect nothing less than quality public transport that is safe, fast, effi cient and affordable, as promised every day by all spheres of government.
Here is to hoping that drivers and owners will run these quality buses effi ciently and professionally and keep them clean and roadworthy at all times, failing which the city council will have to take back ownership. To those taxi owners who are still against BRT it’s time for introspection. Johannesburg is one of the fastest growing African world class cities and needs public transport transformation fi nish and klaar.

AMY PATTISON-EMMSTHE transport system in Joburg has been developed to improve South Africans’ travel experience.
Confl ict between taxi operators and the city council has been resolved, opening the gate to an effi cient, reliable, affordable, safe and eco-friendly commuting system.
This was according to Executive Mayor Amos Masondo, speaking at a press conference at the Metropolitan Centre in Braamfontein. Masondo, announced the fi nalisation and closure of negotiations between taxi owners and the city council regarding ownership of the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) Rea Vaya system.
Masondo said this project was launched after ten months of heated discussions between taxi owners and the city council. The offi cial handing over of ownership will
take place in September.He also pointed out that BRT was an
integrated system that would provide communities an alternative and modernised transport system that would not necessarily phase out the traditional taxi system but rather complement it. “This bus system is not just about a few individuals. It’s a project that seeks to improve the quality of life of commuters and residents.’’

AMY PATTISON-EMMSTHE Gauteng government has decided to respond to the call for maintenance of hospitals which is rife across the province.
To tackle this, R30 702 million has been allocated to hospital maintenance around the province. This was revealed by Faith Mazibuko, the Gauteng MEC of infrastructure development during her budget speech at the legislature.
“We have identifi ed among other hospitals, Chris Hani Baragwanath, Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic and Helen Joseph hospitals as our planned maintenance projects, where we will provide materials and work with communities and cooperatives who will be providing intensive labour.”
According to Mazibuko, this was one of the biggest maintenance projects that the government would undertake.
The Democratic Alliance (DA) was not convinced.
Neil Campbell, DA Deputy Spokesman for Health, said the money was insuffi cient. “At Chris Hani Baragwanath hospital alone there are four boilers and half of them are not working.
“Fixing them will gobble up that whole budget.’’
Campbell also suggested that it would be better if that project was undertaken by the health department which was better informed on hospital requirements.

I think that it’s wonderful but there is a question I would like to ask the Fifa board. What happens

The recent 33 sales of council land, some parks and open spaces that
slipped through the Joburg Property Company and are now the subject of a court case, are a wake-up call to the community. We must protect our green lungs and open spaces from developers and those who wish to profi t from them, at all costs. The Field and Study park no longer has a permanent employee to empty bins and keep watch. As a community enjoying this open space, please work with us to keep it tidy. We
are working with Joburg City Parks to fi nd a solution to this and other problem areas in the park. There are indications that development plans may be forthcoming and Fofs will again get involved to see that the park and those who wish to develop in the Riverpark precinct can mutually benefi t. Once again we will need community support when the time comes.

I received a letter in my post informing me that I had won money, but to receive it I needed to forward a fee of R99. I have received three such letters in the past week. Surely if someone
won money he/she would be informed via phone or contacted in person?
Why must a person who has won money have to pay R99 to receive it? There is no phone number on the letters if you want to query it either.

This initiative by the United Nations Environment Programme (Unep), Global Environment Facility (GEF) and South African Department of Environmental Affairs (DEA) aims to encourage tourists to contribute to sustainable tourism by making responsible choices.
The ‘passport’ is a booklet fi lled with information on travel that respects the environment and positively affects economic development. It will be available at airports, hotels and tourist centres countrywide.
This awareness drive launched in Illovo is part of a project called Reducing the Carbon Footprint of Major Sporting Events: Fifa 2010 and the Green Goal. One of the criteria for choosing host countries is how well they fulfi ll this goal.
With $1 million in GEF funding, 12 billboards, 60 traffi c lights and 78 street lights near stadiums in six host cities have been converted to solar power.
Another project enables travellers to calculate and offset their carbon emissions against one of fi ve projects that included soil composting, wind energy and solar cookers.
In addition 11 visiting football teams (Algeria, Cameroon, Cote d’Ivoire, Ghana, Uruguay, Italy, Switzerland, Argentina, England, Republic of Korea and Serbia) have committed to offset their emissions. Unep hoped more would follow suit.
“Hosting the 2010 Fifa World Cup™ must leave a legacy, and we want it to be a green legacy. It’s also an opportunity to showcase
environmentally sound practices,” said Andre Share, DEA chief executive offi cer.
“We hope travellers take the knowledge home and implement environmentally friendly changes in their lives.
“The message is simple yet powerful – through small lifestyle adjustments we can all score goals for our planet,” said Unep’s Satinder Bindra.

KEBA MOTHOAGAEBAFANA Bafana can rest assured the whole nation is behind them.
An estimated 185 000 people packed the streets of Sandton’s central business district to witness the national team parade in an open top bus, with everyone present using the opportunity to wish Bafana well for their opening 2010 Fifa World Cup™ match against Mexico.
The festivities were the brainchild of Rand Merchant Bank which brought on board Primedia, Supersport and Sandton’s Southern Sun where Bafana will stay for the duration of the tournament. National pride was at fever
pitch as people squirmed and jostled for a better view of their heroes, with customary howls of ‘booooooooooth’ ringing out as the team, and a very tall Matthew Booth, came into view. The occasion coincided with Vuvuzela Day, and the sound of nearly 200 000 blaring horns gave the Bafana Boys plenty of gees in their endeavour to do well in the greatest show on Earth.
As if part of proceedings, the Dutch national team bus passed through, sending the crowd into a frenzy that left thunderstruck expressions on the faces of the Dutch players.

Nearly 200 000 tense and excited spectators packed Sandton’s Innesfree Park Fifa Fanfest™ to witness Bafana Bafana collide with Mexico in the fi rst ever 2010 Fifa World Cup™ match on African soil.
Gridlocked traffi c on the adjacent Grayston Drive did not diminish the spirit of an incoming crowd determined to lap up as much quadrennial World Cup euphoria as possible.
Nick Roberts from England described the event as buzzing.
“After this I’m defi nitely staying for the whole tournament,” he said.
The place was awash with the yellow of Bafana Bafana, but a meagre Mexican
representation was intent on making its modest presence felt, even though blowing Central American melodies on vuvuzelas lacked the necessary impact.
When kick-off arrived, the noise and passion was incredible and the rendition of Nkosi Sikelel’ iAfrika seemed likely to bring down nearby buildings as the audience channelled its zeal into a Bafana team almost 30km away.
Immediately after the game, as if on cue, a typical Johannesburg winter chill descended on the park. But the camaraderie kept everyone warm as the droves headed for the exits.
The general consensus was that a return to Innesfree was not negotiable. Expect a bigger, better and louder turnout for the next matches.

SPOIL DADThis Father’s Day, why not spoil Dad with something different, like a home-cooked meal and some quality time together in the kitchen! Grab an apron, pull out the pots and get ready to do your best Nigella domestic goddess thing. We guarantee he’ll be impressed - and appreciative of your efforts!
For chilled-out dadsFrench onion soupIn a large pot, melt 1 tablespoon butter with a few glugs of olive oil over a low heat, as you don’t want it to burn. Make sure the bottom of the pan is covered, by swishing it around. Pour in 3 roughly chopped yellow onions, mix them into the oil with a wooden spoon and sweat gently for about 40 minutes. If the heat is kept to the lowest setting they won’t need more oil. Towards the end of the cooking, turn up the heat a bit; you want the onions to brown and caramelise, not to be charred to a crisp. When the onions look golden and browned round the edges, pour in 2 litres of stock (I use 4 cups of chicken stock and 4 of vegetable stock, although beef is the traditional choice). Turn down the heat to low again, stir, and add 1 tablespoon good aged syrupy balsamic vinegar. This gives the soup a mellow, sweet earthiness. Let it simmer for another 15 minutes, taste, add salt and pepper
For dads who love eggs
Preheat the oven grill to hot. Heat 30ml olive oil in a 25cm, non-stick, heavy-based ovenproof frying pan and sauté 3 sliced red onions, 5ml crushed garlic and 30ml chopped fresh sage until soft and the onions are golden in colour. Pour 10 beaten jumbo eggs into the onion mixture, season with 5ml sea salt crystals and 2ml freshly ground black and pepper, and top with 80g ricotta
if needed, then ladle into bowls. Pour in 100g / 1 cup grated Gruyère or Parme-san cheese when you are about to serve. Serves 4 generously

Onion, ricotta and sageomelette
Preheat a griddle pan on a high heat for 5 minutes until it’s screaming hot. Snap off the woody ends of 500g of asparagus and discard, then grill for 5 to 8 minutes, turning every now and then, so they start to get charred, nutty and delicious. Bash a garlic clove in a mortar and pestle with a pinch of sea salt and freshly ground black pepper, then stir in the zest and juice of half a lemon and 3 times as much Spanish extra virgin olive oil. When the asparagus spears are charred and cooked, put them into a shallow bowl with your dressing to marinate for a few minutes. Transfer them to a plate and serve them with a handful of stoned green olives torn up over the top of your lemon zest sprinkled over. Serves four as a tapas dish.

For dads who like chicken
Preheat the oven to 175°C (350°F / Gas mark 4). In a large, heavy-based frying pan, heat 2 tsp corn oil (vegetable oil) over medium heat. Add 6 skinless, bone-less chicken breasts and brown on both sides. Season with salt and ground black pepper to taste and transfer to a large casserole dish. Add 350g finely chopped onions to the frying pan and sauté until soft and translucent, about 5 minutes. Add 2 finely chopped cloves of garlic and continue sautéing for 1 minute. Add 350g buckwheat to frying pan, stirring to coat with the oil. Cook for 1 minute,
stirring well. Add 1/2 tsp ground cumin, 1/2 tsp ground coriander, 1/2 tsp ground cardamom and juice and grated zest of 1 lemon. Stir well, then spoon buckwheat mixture over chicken. In a medium saucepan, bring 700ml chicken stock to the boil. Pour stock over buckwheat and chicken. Cover the casserole tightly with aluminium foil and bake for 45 minutes, until chicken is cooked through and buckwheat has absorbed almost all the chicken stock. Serves 6

For dads who enjoy meatLamb shanks with peppers and brinjalPreheat the oven to 175°C. Dust 6 lamb shanks with 1 cup flour seasoned with salt and pepper and fry in 1/4 cup olive oil until brown. Transfer the shanks to an ovenproof dish. Arrange 1 diced red pepper, 1 diced yellow pepper, 1 diced green pepper, 36 whole baby onions, 1 x 410g can peeled tomatoes and 1 cubed brinjal over the shanks. Combine 1 cup white wine and 2 cups chicken stock and pour over the shanks and vegetables. Season to taste. Cover the dish and roast for 1 to 1 1/4 hours. Serve with rice. Serves 4 - 6

And finally ... for dads with a sweet tooth Apple tartPeel and core 6 apples. Cut 3 of them into chunks and cook with 1 tsp sugar and 1 stick cinnamon to make a purée. Slice the other 3 apples into thin wedges and poach until soft. Roll out pastry into a greased tart dish. Blind bake in preheated oven at 200°C for 10 minutes. Remove from oven. Spoon apple purée over the pas-try lining. Arrange cooked apple wedges on top. Spread apricot jam over the top. Return to oven for 20 to 30 minutes and bake until golden.

Tickets were sold out and the 35000 capacity stadium was fi lled to the brim, with the majority of fans from the local Portuguese community.
Superstars Cristiano Ronaldo, Deco and Ricardo Carvalho made appearances to the crowd’s delight as Portugal thrashed Mozambique 3-0.
Both sides had opportunities during the
fi rst half. Mozambique hit the upright with a magnifi cent shot from defender Paito.
The second half yielded the much anticipated results as Portugal capitalised on a fl aw in the Mozambican defence, and striker Danny tapped one in past the goalkeeper. Ronaldo started from the bench and immediately impacted the game with his trademark step over. Portuguese striker Hugo Almeida made it two after a one-two pass with captain Simao.
The third came off the Mozambican goalie’s save of a Ronaldo shot that Almeida once again tapped in.

ABED AHMEDTRANSPARENCY was a key priority at the 60th Fifa Congress at Sandton Convention Centre as over 208 affi liated soccer associations from around the world were present to view Fifa’s fi nancial results.
Fifa’s current fi nancial situation looked impressive as the last four years yielded profi ts in the region of $3 billion while the organisation’s expense budget was 18 percent under its allocation for 2009 alone. Last year’s result was an impressive $196 million profi t.
Global soccer development over the past year received $172 million and it was announced that member associations would receive $250 000 as a bonus, while six confederations would each receive an
additional $2.5 million as a profi t share of Fifa’s 2009 annual fi nancial results.
On the election front, President Sepp Blatter announced he was ready to stand for another term as members prepared for the upcoming elections after the World Cup. Blatter was elected after the 1998 Fifa World Cup™ in France and has served for three consecutive terms.
Fifa secretary general Jerome Valcke was said to be a natural candidate for the Fifa presidency, but declined to comment on any matter relating to his involvement.
The congress also agreed to keep the executive committee’s decision on age eligibility for players in the men’s Olympic tournaments at 23.

Olympic youth squad announcedABED AHMEDSOUTH African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee (Sascoc) has announced the squad that will compete in the fi rst Youth Olympics in Singapore later this year.
The announcement was made by Sascoc president Gideon Sam. The squad will include 62 athletes, 24 offi cials and fi ve medical offi cers from around the country.
The athletes will participate in athletics, aquatics, basketball, canoeing, cycling, equestrian disciplines, fencing, gymnastics,
hockey, rowing, triathlon, weightlifting and wrestling.
Cultural and educational programmes will be part of the event and mandatory for athletes.
“These youngsters have qualifi ed to be here, they were not randomly picked,” said Sam.
“The Singapore Youth Olympics will for the fi rst time allow the world’s youth aged 14 to 18 the opportunity to compete on an international level and hopefully gain the experience to be selected for their fi rst Olympic squad.”
Chef de Mission or custodian of
the South African squad Dave Carr said he was adamant they would not disappoint their country.
“On this level, besides winning medals which we will, we have to allow these youngsters to integrate on a cultural and social level which will give them the respect they need to make an impact on the Olympic Games,” said Carr.
The event in Singapore will see 3600 athletes, 1200 media members and an anticipated spectatorship of close to 400 000. It will be held from August 14 to 26.

SHARMAINE REUTERDOUGLASDALE sisters, Kadzamiri (14) and Vizuri (9) Modjadji are brimming with enthusiasm and patriotism for the 2010 Fifa World Cup™, since they both play a part in the historical event.
Two weeks ago, Kadzamiri was chosen as a fl ag bearer for the quarterfi nal at Ellis Park on 3 July.
Kadzamiri was at home with her friends when she discovered the news.
“I was so excited and jumped up and down screaming when I found out,” she said. “It was great to have my friends there to share the excitement with me.”
She said she wasn’t too sure of what was expected of her on the day.
“But they will brief us and it’s sure to be great fun since there will be more than 300 fl ag bearers.”
Her younger sister Vizuri performed in a video screened at the opening ceremony last Friday.
“I auditioned for it about two weeks beforehand, and at the time all I knew was it had something to do with the World Cup.”
The next day, Vizuri got word she had the part and fi lming started the following day.
The idea for the video was to showcase the young girl in different parts of Joburg.
“I was a little nervous but was also so excited and felt like a model.”
A highlight for the sisters was they got to keep the clothes.
“I had this pretty princess dress made for me which is now mine,” said Vizuri while Kadzamiri said she was thrilled to have her fl ag bearing soccer gear.
