SAN TELMO
Take a walk on the bohemian side of Buenos Aires
-
At the Mercado – the permanent
flea market - you can buy
everything from fruits and
vegetables and antique posters
to Gramophones (yes, there is a
Gramophone store) and
chandeliers.
Haggling? Of course, This is a
good place to practice your
bargaining skills.
-
CIAO, BELLA! …the Italian influence is everywhere.
-
Sunday is the day when street
vendors, tango dancers,
puppeteers, mimes and just about
anyone else with a talent and an
empty hat comes out to entertain,
amuse and enlighten.
Plaza Dorrego is especially known
for its impromptu tango shows
that are put on right in the middle
of the square.
-
Bar El Federal has been at the corner of Peru and Carlos Calvo since 1864 and is a trip
back into time. The stained glass is still bright, the wood is heavy and worn into comfort,
and the best treat you could give yourself after an afternoon of flea market shopping is to
sit at a window table, open your book and settle in for a few hours of reading Borges and
drinking cappuccino. In Buenos Aires, no one ever hurries you.
