“PRESIDENT’S CORNER” Dear Goldenaires:

Summer’s here and so is SUMMER SPLASH. A

“Summer of Love” nostalgia trip for al of you young at

heart!

Memories of flower power, love, fabulous music

(the Beatles) beach parties, tye-dye Anthos “groovy”

clothes! So colorful, such fun! Join us for lunch and share

a few memories with people who actually know what

you’re talking about! Songs from the Summer of Love

provided by the “Three Guitars”, including Joanne

Saltzgaber-a member, Jeannie & Tom Finch (who I heard

played with the Holding Company & Jefferson Airplane?).

How great is that? SO let’s take back that youthful feeling

and enjoy a summer day! I’m looking forward to seeing a

really big crowd on June 1th. See you at Summer Splash!!

The Tea Garden trip was lovely. The addition of

the Botanical Gardens & Conservatory with butterfly

habitat was quite a treat! Serene gardens and lunch in a tea

house, exotic plants we’re never seen or heard of and a

“fantasy of colorful butterflies” like a dream! What an

experience!

The Cinco De Mayo luncheon was so good!

Catered by Blueberry Hill Caters and Marge Wehrer and

crew – terrific job everyone! And Joanne and her

decorations group did such a festive job - Gracias!

The spirited entertainment by Lucinda, Sandy & Leila

inspired an audience member to get up and dance with such

energy and joy I think they would to have her in their act!

Effie’s Cooking Class was entertaining,

informative and tasty! Conversations among foodies

always interesting and fun! Come join the class to sample,

learn and chat!

Our last Wednesday Bingo did very well, and I

hope everyone noticed the bright, new “BINGO” sign out

front. It was designed and donated by our very talented

Goldenaire member & graphic artist, Suzanne Akagi.

Reports say it looks terrific and very eye-catching! Thank

you Suzanne for a fabulous job!

The Goldenaires appreciate your stepping in to

update our image. Speaking of which, she is also updating

our “NEWSETTE” master head design, which hasn’t

changed in 15 years, to give us a fresher look. Our thanks

again, Suzanne, for our new image! We hope to have it

appear starting in next month’s Newsette!

Now that summer’s here, I hope everyone feels

like putting on their dancing shoes and kicking up their

heels at the Sunday dances! Invite all your dancin’ friends

and have a party. Oh, and don’t forget the Giant’s game

July 19th-Go Giants! And “LUAU” on July 14

th!

Our every hard working director, Carol Jacobs-

Courtz, is already planning our Christmas Craft Fair. We

thought it would be really festive to have “Santa” at the fair

for the kids and parents to take pictures and enjoy the food

and fair! So if you know someone who would make a jolly

“St. Nick”, between 3-6PM on Nov. 3rd

and would like to

volunteer some Ho-Ho-Ho and be in dozens of pictures,

please let Carol know. I think we already have a “Mrs.

Santa” to help pass out candy canes!

Carol is already busy scheduling trips & events for

2018! I can’t keep up – the eyar goes by so quickly, that’s

why those cruises and trips to serene gardens, lovely places

and fun shows are good. You get to slow down, let go,

stop and smell the flowers, float down a river, be

entertained, have lunch and do nothing but enjoy! It’s a

good thing! Our director Carol works hard to find all these

fun things for us to do and appreciates our suggestions on

places to go so we can sit back & enjoy! So, much thanks

Caro for your constant searching. To everyone, I say. Take

it slow, enjoy the little things and I hope to see you all at

the luncheons and trips soon!

Best Wishes To You!

The Health Benefits of Wine Wine – in moderation – has long been touted as good for health, and many people believe that having a glass of red or white on a regular basis can enhance their overall wellness. May 25 was National Wine Day, a time to celebrate wine for its history and the depth it

adds to meals and celebrations. It’s also an appropriate time to explore the health benefits that wine may offer. Heart Disease - Mayo Clinic reports that antioxidants in red wine, as well as the alcohol, may help

ward off coronary artery disease. The benefits also may stem from the increase in “good” cholesterol — high-density lipoprotein — that antioxidants may provide. Wine and other types of alcohol are also believed to reduce the formation of blood clots, improve function of blood-vessel cells and help stop damage from arteries caused by harmful cholesterol. Eye Health Research has found that individuals who imbibe moderately have a 32-percent lower

likelihood of developing cataracts than do people who don’t drink at all. In addition, people who drink wine are significantly less likely to have cataracts than those who mainly stick to beer. Cancer Research has found that drinking a moderate amount of wine lowers the risk of colon cancer by 45 percent. In addition, wine is believed to reduce the chances of other types of cancers. (However, it is also important to note that alcohol has been linked to higher incidents of breast cancer.) Substances in wine, including phenolic compounds and antioxidants like resveratrol, may retard growth of cells related to breast, prostate and liver cancer, studies have shown. Osteoporosis Moderate drinkers also may reduce their risk of osteoporosis, the thinning of bones

related to loss of calcium. One study indicated that women who drank a moderate amount of wine each day had higher mineral density in their hip region bones than did individuals who drank higher quantities or not at all. Cognitive Decline - One or two alcoholic drinks a day may lower the possibility of developing dementia

by nearly 40 percent, research has shown. The moderate drinkers included in the study were over the age of 75 and displayed a reduced risk of dementia compared to peers who did not drink and those who had more than two drinks each day. Another study found that brain function deteriorated at a significantly slower pace in moderate drinkers than in people who abstained from alcohol. Should You Drink Wine for Your Health? Despite all the good news about wine and health, most

doctors won’t advise you to start drinking if you’re not already a drinker. Drinking to excess can increase the risk of a variety of health problems — including the danger of automobile accidents — and can outweigh the benefits gained from moderate drinking. As scientific research continues to shed more light on the benefits and risks of drinking, the best policy for drinkers may be to enjoy your wine while keeping consumption at a moderate level.

MEMORY SCREENINGS Are you concerned? Take Action!

Thursday, July 20th

9:00am – 12:30pm (half-hour individual appointments)

Who should be screened? Memory screening makes sense for anyone concerned about memory loss. Screenings are also appropriate for anyone who

does not have a concern right now, but who wants to see how their memory is now and for future comparison.

What is memory screening? Memory screening is as simple as a few short activities with a geriatric professional. How you do with the activities is not a

diagnosis and in no way does it replace consultation with a qualified health professional, but it may lead to a thoughtful

conversation about “next steps.” You have time to discuss your concerns with a professional. The screenings are individual

half-hour sessions just between you and a professional.

Why screen now? Why not? It’s never too early (or too late) to make lifestyle changes that can affect your overall

health: Nutrition -- eat lean protein, fruits, vegetables, foods high in omega 3-fatty acids and antioxidants

Socialization -- call a family member, visit a friend, join an organization, volunteer

Mental Stimulation -- read out loud, problem solve, play a game

Spirituality -- pray, meditate, go to a place of worship

Physical Activity -- walk, dance, garden

Memory Screenings are a national initiative of the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America. In our community, Senior Access,

Senior Helpers, Care Navigate and the Goldenaires are working together to bring this initiative to you.

1) SOMETHING ROTTEN! Aug/Sept 2017 ORPHEUM- With 10 Tony® nominations including Best Musical, Set in

the ‘90s – the 1590s – this hilarious smash tells the story of Nick and Nigel Bottom (Tony® nominee Rob McClure and

Broadway’s Josh Grisetti), two brothers who are desperate to write their own hit play while the "rock star" Shakespeare

(Tony® nominee Adam Pascal) keeps getting all the hits. When a local soothsayer foretells that the future of theatre

involves singing, dancing and acting at the same time, Nick and Nigel set out to write the world’s very first MUSICAL!

With its heart on its ruffled sleeve and sequins in its soul, SOMETHING ROTTEN! is “The Producers + Spamalot + The

Book of Mormon. Squared!” (New York Magazine).

2) AN AMERICAN IN PARIS Sept/Oct 2017-ORPHEUM is the new Tony Award®-winning musical about an

American soldier, a mysterious French girl, and an indomitable European city, each yearning for a new beginning in the

aftermath of war. Acclaimed director/choreographer and 2015 Tony Award®-winner Christopher Wheeldon brings the

magic and romance of Paris into perfect harmony with unforgettable songs from George & Ira Gershwin in the show that

earned more awards than any other musical in 2015.

3) THE COLOR PURPLE – May 2018-ORPHEUM is the 2016 Tony Award® winner for Best Musical Revival!

Hailed as “a direct hit to the heart” (The Hollywood Reporter), this joyous American classic has conquered Broadway in

an all-new "ravishingly reconceived production that is a glory to behold” (The New York Times) directed by Tony winner

John Doyle. With a soul-raising score of jazz, gospel, ragtime and blues, THE COLOR PURPLE gives an exhilarating

new spirit to this Pulitzer Prize-winning story. Don’t miss this stunning re-imagining of an epic story about a young

woman’s journey to love and triumph in the American South. It’s the musical sensation that New York Magazine calls

“one of the greatest revivals ever.”

4) SCHOOL OF ROCK - June/July 2018 – ORPHEUM is a New York Times Critics’ Pick and AN INSPIRING JOLT

OF ENERGY, JOY AND MAD SKILLZ! (Entertainment Weekly). Based on the hit film, this hilarious new musical

follows Dewey Finn,a wannabe rock star posing as a substitute teacher who turns a class of straight-A students into a

guitar-shredding, bass-slapping, mind-blowing rock band. This high-octane smash features 14 new songs from ANDREW

LLOYD WEBBER, all the original songs from the movie and musical theater’s first-ever kids rock band playing their

instruments live on stage. Vanity Fair raves,

5) ON YOUR FEET - Sept/Oct 2018 – GOLDEN GATE From their humble beginnings in Cuba, Emilio and Gloria

Estefan came to America and broke through all barriers to become a crossover sensation at the very top of the pop music

threatening tragedy, ON YOUR FEET! takes you behind the music and inside the real story of this record-making and

groundbreaking couple who, in the face of adversity, found a way to end up on their feet. Directed by two-time Tony

Award® winner Jerry Mitchell (Kinky Boots), with choreography by Olivier Award winner Sergio Trujillo (Jersey Boys)

and an original book by Academy Award® winner Alexander Dinelaris (Birdman), ON YOUR FEET! features some of

the most iconic songs of the past quarter-century.

6) WAITRESS – Oct/Nov 2018-GOLDEN GATE Brought to life by a groundbreaking all-female creative team, this

irresistible new hit features original music and lyrics by 6-time Grammy® nominee Sara Bareilles ("Brave," "Love

Song"), a book by acclaimed screenwriter Jessie Nelson (I Am Sam) and direction by Tony Award® winner Diane Paulus

(Hair, Pippin, Finding Neverland). "It's an empowering musical of the highest order!" raves the Chicago Tribune.

Inspired by Adrienne Shelly's beloved film, WAITRESS tells the story of Jenna - a waitress and expert pie maker, Jenna

dreams of a way out of her small town and loveless marriage. A baking contest in a nearby county and the town's new

doctor may offer her a chance at a fresh start, while her fellow waitresses offer their own recipes for happiness. But Jenna
