“PRESIDENT’S CORNER” Dear Goldenaires: “ALOHA” from a large group of us who enjoyed a visit to the islands via the “LUAU” on July 14

th! While “Tucker Spolter and the Ukulele

Jubilee” serenaded us and graceful Hula dancers lulled us into vacation mode, we enjoyed delicious Hawaiian chicken and ribs catered by Debbie Ghiringhelli and assisted by the able kitchen crew of Cindylu & John Janisen, Pat Fedorchak, Carol Oliva & Lotus Ning and along with help from our Program Director, Carol Jacobs-Courtz! Much thanks to our bartender, Kevin Courtz (Carol’s husband) for setting up those fancy looking Mai-Tai’s & who filled in for Darrell Raggio who was missed by all! And to Joanne Perrone for the colorful floral decorations with help from Vivian Berliner & Loretta Soldavini, and to Ross & Edgar for doing all the heavy work (and Ross’ help with the microphone which I never seem able to work). A big “thank you” goes to Effie Lee for working so hard to sell all those raffle tickets, and thanks also to everyone that bought those tickets! On July 26

th, we held our Annual Summer

Raffle. Congratulations to the following winners: 1

st Prize-$300 CASH-Connie Grey, 2

CASH – Barbara Kutlik, 3rd

Prize-$100 CASH-Fran Vogel, 4

Goldenaires-Sharon Greer. So much effort goes into every event-large or small, to make it a success that it’s just amazing to me! If you haven’t joined is yet for a terrific luncheon or a fun event-PLEASE DO! There’s Monday Night Bingo on Aug. 14

th, El Dorado overnighter on Aug. 17

th &

18th, Day at the Races-Aug. 31

st and definitely don’t

miss the Annual Picnic! A day of fun, bocce, games, prizes, barbecue (our chefs Ross & Kevin-Carol’s husband) and Bingo! If you’ve never been, join us for fund at games on Sept. 8

th!

We have an Oktoberfest luncheon on Oct. 20th

and everyone should make it a point to go to the Senior Information Fair on Oct. 25

th at the Marin Civic

Center for all kinds of useful, practical info on housing, transportation, healthy snacks, goodies and fabulous entertainment too! ALL FREE! This pretty much brings us to November and our crafts fair on the 3

rd! If you have any new items for

our raffle baskets, we’d appreciate your donations at the office or home baked goods on the day before the fair for our bakery booth, which is always a popular booth that sells out first! Contact the office for details and most of all, come and bring all your family & friends! We’re still looking for “SANTA”…anyone? Well, if that’s not enough to keep you busy and involved, there’s more! Just check the rest of the Newsette for all the trips & shows! In addition, we are always looking for backup helpers in the kitchen during bingo/lunch days along with crafty people to join the craft group on Fridays from 12-3PM. They need more people as many of our members have moved on or

unable to attend along with new & fun craft ideas - it’s a fun group! Stop by & check them out! So, did the year just fly by? It’s not just our age that makes it seem so – a 12 year old kid said “This year went by so fast”. Out of the mouths of babes, though actually, it’s true for them-they’re already going back to school in August! We didn’t go back till after Labor Day. Of course, we didn’t get all the breaks kids do these days-seems they’re always off to something or other and parents have to scramble for child care. I certainly am thankful for grown children! Speaking of fall, its flu shot time again on Sept. 18

th from 11:30-1PM here at the Center.

Remember to protect ourselves from the flu! You know how miserable and dangerous it is, especially as you get older! Not so easy bouncing back! (Make sure you’re not allergic to the vaccine). When I was signing up for the craft fair, I met a very talented quilter, Pat Starnes, a member of Goldenaires. She said she did really well at the fair last year and showed me some lovely table runners. I asked her if she might consider meeting with interested persons (beginners and experienced) who would enjoy quilting in the hopes of starting a quilting group for the Goldenaires. She said she had a quilting machine and wouldn’t mind entertaining that idea. So if you’ve thought about getting into quilting, learning or finding an outlet for your quilting talents –here’s your chance! Please contact the office if interested and leave your name-if enough interest we will contact Pat and setup a class. This could be a wonderful beginning! Fingers crossed! Best Wishes to You! **** JUST A REMINDER ****

GET YOUR FLU SHOT before it’s too late!!!

Remember to get your flu shot. It’s the best way to help fight this uncompromising virus and enjoy a healthy flu-free season.

But, you can protect yourself. A flu shot now will give your body time to develop immunity before flu season begins. It’s the smart way to protect yourself against the flu.

Remember, you cannot get flu from a flu shot. The vaccine is made from inactivated or “killed” flu viruses, which are not infectious.

Nurses from Sutter Care At Home will be administering the Quadrivalent flu vaccine, high-dose shots (available) for seniors over age 65 and Quadrivalent preservative-FREE flu shots. Unlike many of the

grocery stores and pharmacies, Sutter Care at Home employs registered nurses to administer vaccinations. The flu nurses have many years of experience and each is trained to assess the health status of every person they are vaccinating. There is a flu vaccine that is not made with eggs, and to ask their doctor about this. Sutter Health Care does not have it. As with any vaccine, vaccination may not protect 100% of all susceptible individuals. Most common side effect-soreness at the injection site for up to two days. Less common side effects: fever & fatigue.

FLU SHOT CLINIC HERE-San Rafael Community Center

618 B Street, San Rafael

DATE: Monday, Sept. 18th

TIME: 11:30am-1:00pm No reservation necessary. Bring your Medicare Part B (as long as not an HMO) & Sutter will bill Medicare for your vaccination. If not enrolled, vaccine is $30 for Quadrivalent vaccine or $45 for the high dose vaccine. Questions call Denise Sobel at 1-707-535-5690

ATTENTION: We have a member (female/non-smoker) that is looking for a roommate for the CANYON COUNTRY TOUR – April 12th-20th, 2018, presented by Collette Tours.

Brain Fitness Workshop-no charge

SEPT. 28th

(Thursday) 10:30-11:30AM

San Rafael Community Center (Goldenaires) Concept Statement:

As we age, we start relying more and more on the routines of life. We brush our teeth, we write our name or we drive the

same direction to the store. The challenge with routines? They don't require you to think about the activity.

There are many ways to exercise your brain:

Use your non-dominate hand to do a task * Drive a different way to go shopping

Learn something new * Play a Game

The Alzheimer's Foundation of American suggests the following five things to promote a healthy brain lifestyle:

Physical Activity -- walk, dance, garden

Nutrition -- eat lean protein, fruits, vegetables, foods high in omega 3 fatty acids and antioxidants

Socialization -- call a family member, visit a friend, join an organization, volunteer

Mental Stimulation -- read out loud, problem solve, play a game

Spirituality -- pray, meditate, go to a place of worship

Workshop: San Rafael Goldenaires & Senior Access will be offering a new way to accomplish these activities.

Join us for 1 hour of FUN activities. Our activity leader will lead you through a series of brain fitness exercises.

The event will provide you an opportunity to achieve:

Physical Activity (you have to get to the event);

Socialization (you will be surround by a group of other people); and

Mental Stimulation (you play games together).

CALL 415-485-3348 to reserve a space in this fun workshop! Limited to only 20 participants!

an all-new "ravishingly reconceived production that is a glory to behold” (The New York Times) directed by Tony winner

John Doyle. With a soul-raising score of jazz, gospel, ragtime and blues, THE COLOR PURPLE gives an exhilarating

new spirit to this Pulitzer Prize-winning story. Don’t miss this stunning re-imagining of an epic story about a young

woman’s journey to love and triumph in the American South. It’s the musical sensation that New York Magazine calls

“one of the greatest revivals ever.”

3) SCHOOL OF ROCK - June/July 2018 – ORPHEUM is a New York Times Critics’ Pick and AN INSPIRING JOLT

OF ENERGY, JOY AND MAD SKILLZ! (Entertainment Weekly). Based on the hit film, this hilarious new musical

follows Dewey Finn,a wannabe rock star posing as a substitute teacher who turns a class of straight-A students into a

guitar-shredding, bass-slapping, mind-blowing rock band. This high-octane smash features 14 new songs from ANDREW

LLOYD WEBBER, all the original songs from the movie and musical theater’s first-ever kids rock band playing their

instruments live on stage. Vanity Fair raves,

4) ON YOUR FEET - Sept/Oct 2018 – GOLDEN GATE From their humble beginnings in Cuba, Emilio and Gloria

Estefan came to America and broke through all barriers to become a crossover sensation at the very top of the pop music

world. But just when they thought they had it all, they almost lost everything. From international superstardom to life-

threatening tragedy, ON YOUR FEET! takes you behind the music and inside the real story of this record-making and

groundbreaking couple who, in the face of adversity, found a way to end up on their feet. Directed by two-time Tony

Award® winner Jerry Mitchell (Kinky Boots), with choreography by Olivier Award winner Sergio Trujillo (Jersey Boys)

and an original book by Academy Award® winner Alexander Dinelaris (Birdman), ON YOUR FEET! features some of

the most iconic songs of the past quarter-century.

5) WAITRESS – Oct/Nov 2018-GOLDEN GATE Brought to life by a groundbreaking all-female creative team, this

irresistible new hit features original music and lyrics by 6-time Grammy® nominee Sara Bareilles ("Brave," "Love

Song"), a book by acclaimed screenwriter Jessie Nelson (I Am Sam) and direction by Tony Award® winner Diane Paulus

(Hair, Pippin, Finding Neverland). "It's an empowering musical of the highest order!" raves the Chicago Tribune.

Inspired by Adrienne Shelly's beloved film, WAITRESS tells the story of Jenna - a waitress and expert pie maker, Jenna

dreams of a way out of her small town and loveless marriage. A baking contest in a nearby county and the town's new

doctor may offer her a chance at a fresh start, while her fellow waitresses offer their own recipes for happiness. But Jenna

must summon the strength and courage to rebuild her own life.
