TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION

An old joke asks, “What me is Midnight Mass?” The answer is not really obvious, since Christmas is unique in having several dis nct celebra ons. The readings and prayers vary greatly from hour to hour. The Vigil Mass hinges on the family herit-age of Jesus and his origins. The concept of “midnight” predates clock me, and really has to do with a celebra on in the hours of darkness. Years ago, it was not possible to receive Commun-ion without fas ng for a full day, so the late hour of this Mass made it possible for the people to receive. The first Mass a er sunrise, the Mass at Dawn, was once known as “The Shepherds’ Mass,” and later Masses set aside stories of Jesus’ birth to focus on the key to the day’s celebra on: John the Evangelist’s majes c theology of Christ’s iden ty as the Word made flesh, dwelling among us. One feast, four separate Masses. Only monas-teries manage the whole round. Parishioners typi-cally take just one entry point into the mystery. Yet there is much to savor and celebrate in the coming of Christ into the world. Christmas is not a day, but a season. You s ll have two weeks to send those Christmas cards before you’re officially late!

The Caritas Corner

Thank you all for your continued generosity and love in ac-tion in caring for our brothers and sisters in need in our community. The Caritas – or “Charity” -- Fund is adminis-tered by the San Francescani Society and funded through the second collection normally on the third Sunday of each month. Its purpose is to assist recipients – who through no fault of their own have fallen on hard times and have recog-nizable “one time” needs – in “getting back on their feet.” Since the beginning of the fund in Dec 2014 over $11,000 worth of assistance has been disbursed – again, as a result of your tremendous generosity.

Throughout the year we are continually looking for addition-al brothers and sisters in need in our community who deserve our help. We would value any input you might have in helping us indentify those in need. Inputs can be made to Ron Bucchi, Society President, 210-857-1115.

All donations are tax deductible under SFDP’s 501(c) (3) designation as a not-for-profit entity. Again, we are funded through the second collection donations normally on the third Sunday of each month. In addition to the once a month second collection, the Caritas Fund accepts individu-

al as well as business donations. Donations can also be mailed to: Henry Garcia, Treasurer, San Francescani Soci-ety, P.O. Box 782474, San Antonio, TX 78278-2474

Again, thank you for your generosity and support and we look forward to keeping you updated as we continue to help our brothers and sisters in need.

May you have a Happy and Blessed New Year!

San Francescani Society
