TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION
As soon as Christmas ends, people begin planning for Easter! Originally, the source of our Paschal Triduum was but a single liturgy extending from Saturday sundown to sunrise on Easter Sunday. The two days leading up to the liturgy were days of fast, not only for the elect, but for the church preparing to bap ze them. A fi h-century pope explained that the church imitated the apostles, who were in hiding with their grief from the arrest of Jesus, and therefore sacraments, even penance, were forbidden.
Inevitably, though, people wanted to come together, and so eventually a Liturgy of the Word developed for Good Friday. This was the first step toward today’s shape of the Triduum, and gradually new ideas were embraced, including the venera on of the cross and a simple Communion service. Interes ngly, the Word remained central, since we know that in those days the pope did not receive Communion at this liturgy, even though the faithful had that op on. In the other churches of Rome, priests and people received Communion under both species. Although the custom of Com-munion on Good Friday took hold, it did not endure past the Middle Ages. The central liturgies of the year slowly un-raveled and disappeared from parish life. Remember that there were no seminaries in those days, and books were a rare luxury. Most priests could only manage to celebrate a simple “low” Mass, and few parishes could afford the ritual books that would guide a priest through the complex forms. Holy Week remained important in private devo on, but for a me the liturgies virtually disappeared.

The Caritas Corner
Thank you all for your continued generosity and love in action in caring for our brothers and sisters in need in our community. The Caritas – or “Charity” -- Fund is administered by the San Francescani Society and funded through the second collection normally on the third Sunday of each month. Its purpose is to assist recipients – who through no fault of their own have fallen on hard times and have recognizable “one time” needs – in “getting back on their feet.” Since the beginning of the fund in Dec 2014 over $11,000 worth of assistance has been dis-bursed – again, as a result of your tremendous generosity.
Throughout the year we are continually looking for additional brothers and sisters in need in our community who deserve our help. We would value any input you might have in helping us identify those in need. Inputs can be made to Ron Bucchi, So-ciety President, 210-857-1115.
All donations are tax deductible under SFDP’s 501(c) (3) des-ignation as a not-for-profit entity. Again, we are funded through the second collection donations normally on the third Sunday of each month. In addition to the once a month second collec-tion, the Caritas Fund accepts individual as well as business donations. Donations can also be mailed to: Henry Garcia, Treasurer, San Francescani Society, P.O. Box 782474, San Antonio, TX 78278-2474
Again, thank you for your generosity and support and we look forward to keeping you updated as we continue to help our brothers and sisters in need.
May you have a Happy and Blessed New Year!
