Registra on is now open for online for Assembly 2016, taking place on Saturday, November 5th, on the campus of St. Mary’s University. Keynote speakers will be Eduardo Verastegui, Kar-yme Lozano and Fr. Thomas Mc Carthy. In the spirit of this year’s theme “United As Church” we are requiring all par cipants a ending Assembly 2016 to carpool in groups of no less than three persons per vehicle. Vehicles with less than three persons will not be allowed to park on campus. To foster the spirit of unity, it is Archbishop Gastavo’s desire for all a endees to em-brace this requirement as a sign of our communion with one another. This three person requirement applies to all vehicles, including those reques ng accessible parking (vehicles must show handicapped placard) on the St. Mary’s campus for those with disabili es. Register for Assembly 2016 by visi ng the Arch-diocese website at www. assemblysa.org or call 210-734-1911.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION This month, parishes around the country will conduct the “October count,” a measure of a endance at Sunday Mass. The measure has been taken for many centuries, and in some European dioceses it is possible to measure the level of en-gagement in worship by the popula on over the course of many centuries. Long ago, it was also the custom to track “Easter duty” by a sta s cal report. Penitents would receive a kind of chit at confession, which they would then turn in at their parish church when they received Holy Communion dur-ing Easter me.

Long ago, of course, Communion was fairly rare in the life of a Catholic Chris an, perhaps only once a year. The chits would be tallied by parish priests and reported to the chancery, which in turn would hold on to the records and include the sta s cs in a report to the Va can every five years. Nowadays, the October count has proved especially cri cal in the life of our Church as bishops use the figures to measure the vitality of church life, to sketch parish boundaries, and even to decide when to close, merge, or form new parishes.
