The Caritas Corner A family of seven was in tears as they watched firefighters try to save their home in far South Bexar County. “We lost everything in the house and only have what we had on our back and feet” said the homeowner. “Fortunately, all five children, ages 5 to 17, made it safely out of the house. However, they were unable to get any of their belongings out – belongings like much needed equipment for their youngest son who has cerebral palsy” reported KSAT-12 News. For some reason, the insurance settlement was not sufficient to replace their belongings or get them started on a new home. They are living in a small RV trailer on their property. As a gift of kindness, we delivered – through the Caritas Fund -- two $1,000 gift cards to help ease the fami-ly’s burden and help replace their personal necessities. Additionally, we will continue to help the family find a cheap-er alternative to the mobile home they are trying to purchase and help get a better resolution on the insurance settlement issue. Despite their loss, the family said “they are grateful to still have each other”. This Caritas – or “Charity” -- Fund is administered by the San Francescani Society and funded through the second collection normally on the third Sunday of each month. Its purpose is to assist recipients – who through no fault of their own have fallen on hard times and have recognizable “one time” needs to help get back on their feet.

In addition to the once a month second collection, the Caritas Fund accepts individual as well as business

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION The Eucharis c Prayers at the heart of our litur-gy have a long history, beginning with the ex-temporaneous prayers of the early Chris ans. The presiders gave thanks from their hearts, not from any prearranged text, over the gi s of bread and wine. When the assembly had the sense that enough was said, someone would call out “Amen!” and that was that. For the most part, the plan flowed directly from Jewish meal prayers, which always recalled God’s mighty deeds. Some other markers and sign-posts were added almost everywhere fairly ear-ly, like the presider’s call to a en on: “Li up your hearts!”

Scholars have provided us with transla ons of many early texts. These have actually helped us cra new liturgical prayers, because un l the liturgical reforms of forty years ago, no one could recall any prayer but the Roman Canon, now called Eucharis c Prayer I. For hundreds of years in the West, it was our only Eucharis c Prayer, and it was only in La n. But the history of our Eucharis c Prayers is amazingly frui ul, and models have come down to us that have yielded new insights and expressions. The old custom of improvising texts according to a mas-ter plan has not endured, but we have now re-discovered a plan of standardizing the text while allowing for a great variety.
