Explanatory Answers
Q.1. Just complaining about the traffic jam will not help anyone and hence option (c) is least
contributive in nature. Option (c) also indicates that there is a lack of intent to reach office
on time. Option (c) scores only 1 mark.
Option (d) is better than option (c) it shows there is some intent to reach office on time.
Option (d) scores 2 marks.
Option (a) is better than both (d) and (c) since here Surya respects his work and sees that
his being late will be not in the best interest of his team and organization. Also, by the act
of informing he has given consideration to other people who would be participating in the
meeting (he values their time too). Option (a) scores 3 marks.
Option (b) clearly is the best contributive option. Surya here demonstrates a clear intent to
reach office on time. He is doing all that he can do to find the solution to the problem and
try and reach office on time. Surya here is taking the responsibility, he values the meeting
and his work and clearly has a “make things happen” attitude. Option (b) scores 5 marks.
Q.2. In option (a) Rajnish looks at his job in a very narrow way as a 'mere' tailor. He will only
stitch (Rajnish here does not know about customer satisfaction). Option (a) scores 1 mark.
In option (c) Rajnish looks at his delivered product (seat covers) as something which will be
an addition to some cars. He doesn‟t look at his job as something which can add value to
the cars and the owners (customers). He surely doesn‟t respect his job. Option (b) scores
2 marks.
If Rajnish looks at his job as the one which will make the end product valuable (in this case,
the end product is car) - he will strive for customer satisfaction. In option (d) Rajnish does
see the value he is creating or is capable of creating, but it is slightly lesser than the best
option because the value of the car is as perceived by him and not the customer. Option
(d) scores 3 marks.
If Rajnish believes that the only reason why he works is to make his customers feel happy,
then he will take pride in his work and at the same time believe that his work is necessary
to make the end product better which in turn will make the customer happy.

Q.3. Just because one of the team member is absent that does not mean the customer should
suffer. We see examples like this all over - how many times do we see long queues at
banks, ticket counters etc. because one person is absent.
When Kamaal continues to do his own work as given in option (d) he shows an apathetic
approach towards his team mates, his hotel and customer. Option (d) scores 1 mark.
Kamaal in option (a) just passes the problem upwards without putting in any effort to solve
it or trying to come up with a solution to the problem. Option (a) scores 2 marks.
Kamaal in Option (c) is leading by examples. He himself is cleaning the table/dishes and
has not just stopped at giving advices. This option has lesser weightage primarily because
he has decided the solution by himself and expects other to follow. 3 Marks for option (c).
In Option (b) Kammal decides to call his co-workers and together decide what the solution
could be so that customers do not feel uncomfortable. The best part when everyone
decides on a plan together is that everyone feels responsible for the solution and takes
ownership of the consequence. Option (b) scores a full 5 marks.
Q.4. Each option given in the question is a contributor practice just that by itself it is incomplete
but when all are done together it results into CONTRIBUTION.
Practitioners of Option (c) demonstrate adherence with the law. Kantilal demonstrates
ethical values here, but this should not be an excuse for being late. 1 mark for option (c)
In Option (b), he delivers the furniture undamaged and on time. Here Kantilal demonstrates
effectiveness in his work. He also demonstrates certain degree of human concern since he
is concerned about the inconveniences which the customer has to go through incase the
furniture gets damaged. Option (b) scores 2 marks.
In option (a), Kantilal surely demonstrates effectiveness and great deal of human concern.
3 marks for option (a)
Since a contributor seeks to combine Effectiveness and Values, all of the three are very
important. Option (d) scores 5 marks.
Insight: Contributor‟s focus is on achieving the larger goals of the team, rather
than focusing only his/her own personal success. Unit 1: Who is a Contributor?
Insight: In any work, the Contributor Personality seeks to combine
– Effectiveness (Performing work activities well & Achieving the goal)

Q.5. Denai in option (b) gives a static identity to himself. Denai is completely depending on his
past achievement. He thinks he will win this year because he had won last year. Hence,
option (b) is the least contributive answer. Option (b) scores 1 mark.
Denai in option (c) also gives a static identity to himself. Even though Denai is willing to
practice it is only for winning at the Sports Day. Option (c) scores 2 marks.
Denai in option (d) is better than option (c), because the intention of practice is not just
winning but improving last year‟s performance. Thus effort is directed towards
improvement though the improvement is restricted to beating the records. Option (d)
scores 3 marks.
Option (a) is the most contributive because here Denai‟s focus is on improving his ability
as an athlete. If he focuses on this one thing alone, not only will he win but he will also
improve his previous performance. With this attitude he is likely to perform well not just for
the Sports Day but for any other event or activity in future. Option (a) scores 5 marks.
Q.6. Arjun in Option (b) is absolutely unwilling to learn and grow with new task and hence has
blocked himself from growing any further. Option (b) scores 1 mark.
Option (a) reflects Arjun‟s willingness to try new work but at the same time shows
dependence. He says he will do the work only if someone teaches him to do. Thus
willingness to learn, do & grow is dependent on others. Option (a) scores 2 marks.
Option (d) is a very contributive attitude. Here Arjun is not restricting himself and is willing
to learn new things. However the scope is narrow because Arjun‟s attitude seems restricted
only to the given new task (or to computer). Option (d) scores 3 marks.
Option (c) is most contributive of the given four options because it reflects a willingness to
learn and grow in Arjun‟s attitude. Because of his eagerness to learn and grow, Arjun is
always ready to accept new challenges as opportunities. Option (c) scores 5 marks.

Rather, the contributor sees oneself in terms of his/her future potential –
what he/she can accomplish in the future. Chapter 2: Contributor‟s Identity

Q.7. Option (a) indicates that Jagjit has reduced his job title to a mere activity. When such a
thing happens, people do not take ownership of the end result and are likely to shirk
(dodge/evade) responsibility too. 1 mark for option (a).
In Option (c), Jagjit considers himself responsible for ensuring that products fall within
quality requirements. He has with this definition considered himself responsible for the end
product. This will ensure a better quality product. 2 marks for option (c).
Jagjit in option (b) has shown willingness to go beyond his job title however will exert
himself only to benefit his company. Jagjit here has very well understood that the
reputation of his company is directly linked with his performance in this job. Therefore, He
has included the reputation of the company within the ambit of his responsibilities. 3 marks
for option (b).
Option (d) is most contributive because Jagjit has gone beyond his job title of “Quality
Supervisor” and has considered himself responsible for the happiness & satisfaction of all
his customers. This attitude will always push him to do all that is right for the customer. By
taking the responsibility of the last person in the chain all the intermediate links are
automatically taken care of. 5 marks for option (d).
We can also look at these options in the following manner:
Option a: Only my work
Option b: Me + My team (only when the whole team works, the end product can have quality)
Option c: Me + My Team + My Company
Option d: Me + My Team + My Company + My Customer
Q.8. In option (a), the officer sees himself as "expert" in a particular field and thus takes up a
certain kind of assignment. Option (a) scores 1 mark.
In option (b), the officer sees himself in wider terms than (a). He sees that he can mentor
and make a positive difference in others due to his "experience". Option (b) scores 2
marks.
In option (d), the officer sees himself as one who can make a positive difference in face of
adversity. Option (d) scores 3 marks.
In option (c), the officer sees himself as one who can proactively make a positive difference
to the world (unlike in option (d) where the positive difference to the world is a reaction to
some calamity/adversity). Option (c) scores 5 marks.
Insight: The contributor‟s image of self is not defined by “power and position”.
Rather, the contributor focuses on the “responsibility” he/she has been
entrusted with in that role.

Q.9. Aastha in option (a) is measuring the success only in terms of external success of meeting
boss's expectations (or recognition of the boss). Aastha will only keep meeting the target till
the time she observes this recognition. The moment she will identify that her boss has
recognized her effort her inspiration to keep performing will go off. Similarly if she identifies
that her boss is not recognizing her effort, she may lose interest in performance instead of
putting in more effort. Option (a) scores 1 mark.
Aastha in option (c) measures her success on the work (meeting the target). She may relax
after meeting the target or may totally loose interest in performing when given an extra-
ordinarily huge target. She is not enjoying the work or the thrill of the challenges which
come with any job. Option (c) scores 2 marks.
Aastha in option (d) is enjoying the challenge. So she is definitely enjoying inner-success
but note here the key word is "selling tickets" which is narrower than "convincing customers
to go on holiday". Selling the tickets can be monotonous or even transactional (if
customer‟s benefit is not considered). But the joy of seeing a happy customer is dynamic
and ever-evolving. Option (d) scores 3 marks.
Option (b) clearly suggests that Aastha is getting joy in the experience and the challenge of
convincing customers. Option (b) scores 5 marks.
Q.10. Option (d) is the lowest in terms of the contributions among the given four options as it
does not enable Phalguni to gain anything from the failure but just tells her to move on with
no reflection and without any learning from the participation. It also focuses on attempting
for external achievement again. 1 mark for option (d).
In option (c) though the success is being measured in terms of being better than others
(external), it has a positive way of looking at failure, hence it is better than option (d). 2
marks for option (c).
Option (a) will enable Phalguni to see that she was selected for the contest and therefore
worthy of being a participant. Here some weightage is given on the inner success (ability to
contest) over the external loss. 3 marks for option (a).
Insight: The Contributor‟s image of self is not defined by the qualifications and
achievements he/she has got. Rather, he/she thinks of oneself as
someone who has the capability to make a positive difference in the
world. Chapter 2: Contributor‟s Identity
Insight: External and internal success includes not just meeting targets, getting
bonus or being recognized by others, but also the experience and
challenge of working for a target and the joy of achieving it.

Option (b) helps Phalguni to recognize confidence and hence believe that despite losing
the contest she won something much more valuable. The focus is on “inner success” and
it enables her to move away from failure of not winning. The inner success is long lasting
and energizing while the external success had she won would have been short lived. This
is an expanded vision of success (she has become stronger due to the experience). 5
marks for option (b).
Q.11. Option (d) recognises both external and inner success as important ingredients of
success. An expanded vision of success includes both inner (respect from team) &
external (role of a manager) Option (d) scores 5 marks.
Option (b) It recognises inner success and places it higher than external success as inner
success is more long lasting. Option (b) scores 3 marks.
Option (c) recognises only external success which is also very important. Option (c) scores
2 marks.
1 mark for option (a)
The important point here is that external success is important BUT it is important to go for it
along with internal success.
Q.12. Jamnalal in option (a) may at best have short term external success but even that will not
last. His customer will start getting dissatisfied soon and these unsatisfied customers will
stop giving him contracts. 1 mark for option (a).
Jamnalal in Option (b) may have make profits (external success) but he is not showing any
concern towards his customers or not even to his company. His goal of inner success is
not getting met (or is not even considered). 2 marks for option (b).
In Option (c), He has moved higher from profits to building goodwill "among customers" so
the definition of external success has widened. Thus, this option is higher than Option (b).
However, the reason for doing so is to "increase business", he somehow fails to
understand that increased business is an automatic by-product of customer satisfaction
and good-will among them. 3 marks for option (c).
Insight: Sometimes one does not “win” an external achievement, yet one feels
that one has gained confidence and become stronger from the
experience. To others this might look like a “failure” but to you it
doesn‟t seem so – this is an expanded vision of success. Unit 3: The Contributor‟s Vision of Success
Insight: Both of them are successful. One has achieved external success and
one has achieved inner success. An expanded vision of success
includes both. Unit 3: The Contributor‟s Vision of Success

Whereas in Option (d), Jamnalal is focused on 3 different things: customer satisfaction,
employee development and high quality of the product. He is not only interested in External
Success but understands that Internal Success is also very important and necessary for
External Success. 5 marks for option (d).
Q.13. This part of the question “She said that she wants to ensure that India wins in international
events.” clearly indicates that P. T. Usha has a purpose. A Contributor will definitely
recognize the purpose.
Thinking that Usha‟s focus is on becoming "famous" only as an "athlete" is seeing her
achievements in a very narrow way. Option (a) scores 1 mark.
In option (c), her evolution as a coach from an athlete is evident but the focus is on
becoming "famous" both as "coach and athlete". Option (b) scores 2 marks.
Option (b) recognizes her willingness to learn and make "herself" a better coach. Option (b)
scores 3 marks.
Option (d), categorically recognizes her purpose (“making Indian athletes win international
events”) and also her willingness to learn all that is needed to achieve that purpose (“she is
working towards achieving that purpose”). Option (d) score 5 points.
Q14. Salary and perks are important but the thrills to face challenges and opportunity to develop
one-self is even more important. Actually, one‟s continuous growth in salary and perks are
the outcome of one‟s continuous growing skills.
Option (b) where Dilip is focused only on the "salary & perks" is of course least contributive.
Dilip might be good at negotiation and may be successful in leveraging expected salary
from the employers but if he is not intended to grow then Dilip will get stagnant sooner than
later. Option (b) scores 1 mark.
In option (a), Dilip at least goes beyond salary and tries to find out what kind of work he
would be doing. Here Dilip shows an affinity towards work which is a positive attitude, but
he lacks intentions to seek growth/development. Option (a) scores 2 marks.
Dilip in option (d) goes beyond salary, finding out the "what work he would be doing" to
assess if he would "enjoy" doing it or not. Dilip in option (d) is better than (a) since he is
concerned about the quality of work. If he indulges in a work which he enjoys than he will

likely to take to achieve his goals.

be able to deliver high quality output. But here again, Dilip is not open to new learning and
is possibly reluctant to grow. Option (d) scores 3 marks.
In option (c), Dilip is focuses on the "opportunities of development and contribution" in his
work. This is Contributor‟s Opportunity Vision of Career. Option (c) scores 5 marks.
Q15. Harsha in option (a) is closed to learning. He is restricted by his comfort zone and is
scared to identify the learning opportunities. Option (a) scores 1 mark.
In option (d), Harsha though does not see learning opportunity in his job, he sees that he
has a "responsibility" as a postman to "make sure" that letter reach on time to the right
person. Option (d) scores 2 marks.
In option (b), Harsha sees opportunity to contribute beyond just his role. He "volunteers to
take up new responsibilities" and thus "learn". Option (b) scores 3 marks.
In option (c), Harsha sees opportunity to learn and thus contribute to "not only self but
others as well". He is willing to try out and learn new things, diversify and volunteer for new
responsibilities and roles. He is indeed expanding his capacities. Option (c) scores 5
marks.
Q16. In option (b), Tanuja remains in her comfort zone and thus sticks to her job description.
She may be good at what she does (working with software and hardware), and suggesting
anti-virus softwares falls well within her ambit of expertise. But she is confined in her
knowledge and does not try anything new. 1 mark for option (b).
In option (d), Tanuja expands her capacity but the new learning is, again, only within the
"job description". 2 marks for option (d).
In option (c), Tanuja has moved out of her comfort zone (job description). Here she is
growing by learning latest development in the field of computer software, even though she
