Ball-shaped Egg Waffle

Ball-shaped egg waffles are Hong Kong people’s favourite street snacks. People may think that waffles come from western countries but ball-shaped egg waffles are in fact local snacks.

Back in the 1950s, a food hawker made the first ball-shaped egg waffle. The hawker had some broken eggs but he did not want to waste them. So he mixed them with flour and sugar. Then he poured the mixture into a special pan over the fire. Finally the first ball-shaped egg waffle came out. Now there are different tastes, such as chocolate, coconut and honey, etc.

When you buy ball-shaped egg waffles at a food stall, you may also find traditional waffles. They have similar

ingredients but they have different shapes. Traditional waffles have a lot of tiny squares but ball-shaped egg waffles look like little eggs. It also explains why people call ball-shaped egg waffles ‘little chicken eggs’ in Chinese.

Both waffles have similar tastes but I like ball-shaped egg waffles more. They look funnier. How about you?
