The Lord was gracious to Samaritan's Purse in 2012 as we were able to bring physical relief and spiritual comfort to millions of people in over 100 countries across the globe. We praise Him for each of these opportunities to minister to the hurting by providing food, clean

water, medical care, and other much-needed help. Most importantly, we are thankful for the privilege of sharing the hope found in the Gospel of Jesus Christ with those in some of the most troubled areas of the world.

Last year was an exciting time in our ministry as the Lord blessed us with enough Operation Christmas Child gifts to reach more than 100 million shoe box gifts collected since we began the project in 1993. We completed the construction of a new children's home and school to build up generations of Christian leaders in Haiti and launched Operation Heal Our Patriots to minister to wounded American military personnel and their spouses.

Here at home and around the world, more than 580,000 dedicated volunteers sacrificed their time to work with us in ministering to the sick and suffering, building hospitals and churches, providing emergency relief to disaster survivors, and bringing shoe box gifts to hurting children—all in the Name of Jesus Christ.

This Ministry Report highlights these projects and other ways the Lord has opened doors for us to proclaim His saving grace among the nations. We give Him all of the glory for what was accomplished. “The Lord has done great things for us, and we are glad” (Psalm 126:3, NKJV).

None of the work presented on these pages would have been possible without the faithful prayers and support of caring believers like you. Thank you, and may God bless you.

samaritan’s Purse launched Operation Heal Our Patriots in the summer of 2012 to help bring God's healing love to wounded U.S. military members and their spouses. The centerpiece of the program is Samaritan Lodge Alaska, a retreat center on the shores of Lake Clark

in Port Alsworth where couples enjoy a week of rest, adventure, marriage enrichment, and the encouragement that can only come from the Good News of salvation through Jesus Christ.

Marriage can be challenging even without the complications of combat service and serious injury. It is not easy for wounded veterans and their spouses to adjust to “new normals,” learning to deal with the far-reaching effects of lost limbs, severe burns, traumatic brain injury, bullet wounds, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

One of the first couples to participate in the program was Marine Gunnery Sergeant Chadd Jackson and his wife Darci. In 2005, Chadd’s light armored vehicle ran over an improvised explosive device (IED) in Fallujah, Iraq. He was left with a traumatic brain injury and two severed nerves in his right arm, among other wounds. He still suffers from migraines, and has been diagnosed with PTSD.

The frustration and anger during the first few

years after his injury were the worst. Darci was forced to quit her job to bring Chadd to all of his appointments. He was prescribed so many narcotics that it was difficult for him to function. Her formerly self-sufficient Marine husband needed continuous care.

“I was married to one person for 10 years, and now I’ve been married to another person for seven,” Darci said. “They’re definitely not the same person.”

The majority of the troops in the Operation Heal Our Patriots program in the past year suffer from PTSD, often on top of other traumatic injuries. Suicide, domestic violence, alcoholism, and divorce are all too common in those returning from combat zones.

"The best resource for healing is the church," said James Fisher, chaplain for Operation Heal

standinG stronG Army Sergeant First Class Tim Gustafson overcame the physical injury he sustained while serving in Iraq to climb to the top of Alaska's Tanalian Mountain during his time with Operation Heal Our Patriots. Gustafson and his wife Janice (inset) were one of the first couples to participate in this new Samaritan's Purse program.

Our Patriots. "There's nothing veterans from Iraq and Afghanistan need more than a personal relationship with the Lord."

The Jacksons were thankful to get away and focus on their relationship. They were moved by the worship service, inspired by God’s creation, and greatly encouraged by marriage resiliency classes that pointed to the truth of the Gospel.

“The week has given me more desire to get involved with church and family,” Chadd said. “Everything is simple here, but at home things are complex. Maybe we need to do some adjusting.”

Eighty couples enjoyed Samaritan Lodge Alaska's inaugural season between June and mid-September 2012. Each spent about a week in Port Alsworth soaking in the grandeur of the wilderness through fishing and bear watching excursions, floatplane trips, kayaking, hiking, and other activities. Samaritan's Purse staff and more than 270 volunteers worked for two years to build Samaritan Lodge Alaska and prepare for the arrival of the couples.

“Couples are afforded a special freedom to focus on their relationship with God and each other surrounded by an almost pristine environment," said Fisher.

In the daily devotions, marriage resiliency classes, and worship service on Fridays, Fisher asked questions that gently prompted the couples to think through their spiritual situation.

“I felt God didn’t care about us any more. We’ve been through so much in these past four years,” said Jessica Lind. Her husband, Army Sergeant Ken Lind, was badly injured in Iraq, and they lost a grandson shortly after. “This week really opened up my eyes to see God is still there. It was us that backed up, not Him.”

Samaritan Lodge Alaska became a place of renewal, healing, and rebirth this summer as military members and their spouses trusted Jesus as Savior, were baptized in the frigid

waters of Lake Clark, and even made decisions to serve in full-time ministry. Since their time with Operation Heal Our Patriots, a few have begun their seminary studies. Some couples rededicated their marriages in brief ceremonies at Tanalian Falls and along the lakeshore.

Every couple was encouraged to lean first on Christ, then on each other. Retired Army Corporal Max Poyer and his wife, Bev, have seen rough times, but they’re staying the course despite his PTSD from serving in Afghanistan.

“I want my daughter to see her parents not giving up,” Bev said. “I’m trying to teach her the meaning of lifelong commitment by staying with my husband and marriage even in the tough times.”

The Operation Heal Our Patriots program includes long-term follow up with each of the couples, and our staff works to connect participants with a local church upon their return home.

“The spiritual impact of this summer is only beginning to be seen,” said Fisher. “I believe that what’s happened here at Samaritan Lodge Alaska will affect multitudes of people and generations to come. The effects will ripple through eternity, more lasting than even the mightiest of Alaska’s mountains.”

God's HealinG power Captain Jim Fisher, a retired Navy chaplain, shares the message of eternal peace through Jesus Christ as he leads Bible studies and a marriage resiliency workshop.

FellowsHip Tens of thousands of U.S. servicemembers have had their lives turned upside down by devastating injuries and psychological trauma. While at Samaritan Lodge Alaska, couples are able to find others who share their struggles. They encourage each other as they enjoy wilderness activities together, like fishing in our handicapped-accessible boat named for former Alaska Governor Jay Hammond.

strenGtH FroM above Our U.S. Disaster Relief staff and volunteers begin each day with prayer before they head out to share the Good News of God's love with hurting homeowners.

Page 7: SAMARITAN’S PURSE Ministry report 2012s3.amazonaws.com/.../pdfs/2012_samaritans_purse_ar.pdf · 2013-07-10 · Thank you, and may God bless you. dear Friend Franklin Graham President,

the Samaritan’s Purse U.S. Disaster Relief and Rebuild team helped thousands of families in over a dozen states in 2012. Our staff worked alongside an army of volunteers to clear debris, make emergency repairs, and rebuild homes for vulnerable people whose lives had

been turned upside down by natural disaster. Most importantly, we were able to share the hope of the Gospel with storm victims who desperately needed to know that God loves them.

Hurricane Sandy terrorized residents when it tore through states across the East Coast in late October. The storm’s fierce winds and rain left more than 100 people dead. The next morning, homeowners were confronted with badly damaged and flooded houses. Faced with fuel shortages and the lack of electricity, residents were overwhelmed by the tasks of cleaning and repairing their homes.

Samaritan’s Purse began deploying our staff and disaster relief units to four locations less than a day after the disaster hit. We immediately began working in Bergen, Ocean, and Atlantic counties in New Jersey and Nassau County in New York.

Many homeowners said they felt frozen in time. They knew work needed to be done, but they didn’t know where to start. As people

began throwing out their possessions, the work of sorting through personal items and mudding out homes became staggering.

“Streets were lined with possessions, caravans of dump trucks hauling debris streamed out of the communities, and many houses had been flooded with two to four feet of water,” said volunteer Bruce Mundell.

Mundell's team spent the day cleaning and repairing the houses assigned to them. One of the last on his list was Barbara Reiss’ home. Two feet of water had flooded inside, buckling the hardwood floors and destroying everything in its path. Reiss was searching for a reason for the devastation around her. She told Mundell that she had lost hope. She was being forced to leave her home and had just been diagnosed with a terminal illness.

relieF and recovery Committed volunteers (top left) battled bitter cold and strong winds to help clean and repair houses in New York and New Jersey in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy. One year after a fierce tornado struck Tuscaloosa, Alabama (above), Samaritan's Purse was still standing with the community by helping to rebuild homes for some of the most vulnerable storm victims.

“Instantly Barbara saw a difference in our group,” Mundell said. “She noticed they weren't like most of the people in her life. That's when the questions began, and we sensed God drawing her.”

Reiss was amazed at the dedication of the team. Most of the volunteers were women, and they were able to talk with her as they packed boxes to move to a storage unit.

“Among the busyness of the team boxing up years of her life, she continued to quiz me about how God worked in our lives,” Mundell said. “Why did we stay so upbeat in such unpleasant circumstances? In a matter of minutes, she allowed me to share God’s gift to her, and she received Jesus into her life.”

Earlier in the year, Samaritan's Purse responded to wildfires that scorched over two million acres in the western United States. At the same time, our teams were working in Minnesota and Florida to help those whose houses had been badly damaged by unprecedented flooding. In all of these devastating situations, our staff and volunteers worked in the Name

of Christ to sift through ashes for treasured mementos, remove debris, clean out mud-filled homes, and patch roofs.

Mundell was one of thousands of volunteers from across the country that worked alongside Samaritan’s Purse staff in states such as Colorado, Indiana, Minnesota, and New Mexico, to share the love of Christ in word and deed. Volunteers also helped us rebuild homes in Joplin, Missouri and Tuscaloosa, Alabama—two communities devastated by a series of deadly tornadoes that swept across the country in 2011.

Joplin resident Robert Gallagher received a new house from Samaritan’s Purse. He said he was astonished that people from across the nation would come to his town to help people they had never met. Every week, his 90-year-old mother, Loweta, baked cookies for the volunteers working to build their home. “We pray for them every day like they’re our own family,” she said.

“Samaritan’s Purse has been with us every step of the way,” said Robert. “God sent you to us.”

Samaritan’s Purse will begin rebuilding in New Jersey and New York in 2013. Currently there are also rebuild sites in Tuscaloosa, Ala. and Joplin, Mo., as well as two construction sites in Alaska and six international sites.

More than 17,000 people from all 50 states volunteered with relief, rebuild, and construction projects in the past year.

U.S. Disaster Relief helped 2,423 families in 15 states during 2012.

Samaritan’s Purse rebuilt and repaired 41 homes.

the 73 boys and girls, ages 2 to 16, cared for at the Greta Home and Academy in Léogâne, Haiti, had their lives changed last year when they moved into brand-new facilities built by Samaritan’s Purse and named after Fox News commentator Greta Van Susteren for her

strong advocacy on behalf of the Haitian people and support for the work of Samaritan's Purse.

Indoor plumbing, a personal bed, clean clothes, and three meals a day are unattainable luxuries for the majority of children in Haiti. They once were out of reach for the children who now live at the Greta Home and Academy too, but no longer.

The new facility was built on the site where an orphanage was reduced to rubble by the horrific quake that struck the country in 2010. It is located in Léogâne, the epicenter of the disaster. More than 30,000 men, women, and children lost their lives in this area.

Samaritan's Purse hit the ground within 24 hours of the disaster, and we've been working to help people there recover ever since. Our teams have provided assistance for more than one million people over the past few years, including drilling wells for clean water, sending volunteer doctors and nurses to treat the sick,

and strengthening the church with pastors' conferences and discipleship classes.

In the devastating disaster’s aftermath, dozens of vulnerable children were brought to the location, where they lived in the ruins. Upon learning of these little ones’ plight, Samaritan’s Purse provided temporary housing nearby and began caring for them.

The Greta Home and Academy was dedicated to the glory of God in December 2012 with Van Susteren, her husband John Coale, and Franklin Graham in attendance. Van Susteren spoke encouragingly to the children in French, one of Haiti’s two official languages. “It pleases me greatly to be here because you all are very special,” she said.

The campus’ centerpiece—a two-story U-shaped building—features dormitory-style rooms. The building also houses seven

classrooms, a library and media center, offices, a nurse’s station, and a 100-seat cafeteria. An expansive outdoor play center and state-of-the-art commercial kitchen sit behind the main building. A garden, soccer field, and basketball court are planned for the future.

Ten licensed professors teach at the school. Each student is able to work on an inexpensive, durable laptop. Seventh grade will be added next year, and the academy plans to enroll 50 students from the community as well.

The Greta Home and Academy is first and foremost built on the foundation of the Gospel. With the support of Samaritan’s Purse, the children will have opportunities to succeed and become Christian leaders for their country. On the first day at their new home, each child received a set of play uniforms bearing the promise of Jeremiah 29:11—“‘For I know the plans I have for you,’ declares the Lord, ‘plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope’” (ESV).

In addition to meeting physical and educational needs, spiritual discipleship is of primary importance for the staff. There are morning and evening devotions, and all of the children attend a local church on Sundays. Boys and girls seven years and older completed our

discipleship program, The Greatest Journey, this year, and 26 received Christ as Savior.

In early 2013, these 26, along with 13 other children who had made decisions to follow Jesus through church attendance or devotions at the Greta Home, were baptized in the Caribbean Ocean (cover photo). “We have found great joy in teaching them about God,” said Pastor Kenol Despinasse, teacher of The Greatest Journey curriculum. “These children will be our successors and will bring the Gospel to the world after us.”

Fourteen-year-old Jeff Moise was one of those who was baptized. A year after the disaster, he was still living in a tattered tent with his mother and two siblings. His father died when he was very young, and his mother had barely been able to provide for her children even before the earthquake. She made the difficult decision to take them to the Greta Home.

Moise said he wanted to be baptized after he completed The Greatest Journey. He was baptized by Pastor Pierre Julien, leader of Samaritan’s Purse ministry programs in Haiti. After his baptism he said, “Today is a great day because I am living a new life. When I look at what Jesus Christ has done, I wonder how He could love me so much to put me in this home.”

lovinG care The Greta Home and Academy is staffed by caring believers who share God's love with the children through word and deed. Many of these boys and girls have never had a real home in their lives.

Hope For a briGHter Future The grounds of the new facility include a brightly colored playground where girls and boys who once lived in filth and rubble can rediscover the joys of childhood.

samaritan’s Purse helped meet critical needs for those affected by violent conflict and other disasters in some of the world’s most troubled regions. Through our relief and evangelism efforts, hundreds of thousands of people received food, medical help, clean water, and

most importantly, the hope of the Gospel.

sOUTh sUDaNMuch of the world has ignored the war that

Sudan is waging against its non-Arab citizens in the Nuba Mountains and other regions along the country’s border with South Sudan. Hundreds of thousands of people have been driven from their homes. Some try to survive by living in rocky caves and eating sticks and bugs. Others attempt the long, dangerous journey across the border to find refuge in crowded camps in South Sudan.

Samaritan’s Purse is providing life-saving relief to more than 170,000 of these refugees in five camps. We have distributed thousands of tons of food to hungry families. Hundreds of severely malnourished children have been brought back from the edge of death at our therapeutic feeding centers. We also have provided medical care, shelter, clean water, blankets, and hygiene items.

God is at work in the midst of the tragedy, drawing hundreds of people to faith in Christ. The majority of the refugees are Muslims who have never heard the Gospel. Samaritan’s Purse staff and Christian refugees are sharing their faith and inviting residents to one of the more

than 30 open-air churches that have been established in the camps.

Timothy and his family fled from the Nuba Mountains when invading government troops burned their home to the ground. They arrived in Yida, South Sudan after walking for days with almost no food or water. “The people who burned my house accused me of being an evangelist,” Timothy said. “But here in Yida, I can move around freely and talk about Jesus.”

syRiaThe tragic civil war in Syria has claimed more

than 60,000 lives and driven more than 2.5 million people from their homes. Hundreds of thousands have fled into neighboring countries. Samaritan’s Purse is supporting church partners as they work to provide emergency food, medical care, blankets, and heating fuel to thousands of families in Syria, Lebanon, Jordan, and Iraq.

Syrian believers risked their lives to bring food to families in war-ravaged towns where most homes and community buildings had been reduced to rubble. As the Christians responded

One of our longtime ministry partners in the region said, "Throughout the Middle East, there is a new generation of evangelists ready to continue the work of our Lord until that blessed day when He returns to us. I ask you to pray that they will be fearless in their work in any circumstance."

JaPaNWhen an earthquake and tsunami devastated

Japan in 2011, Samaritan’s Purse launched a massive emergency response that transitioned into a major home construction program in 2012. By the end of the year, 507 houses had been rebuilt for Japanese families whose lives had been turned upside down by the catastrophe.

Throughout the 22-month relief and rebuilding campaign, we worked closely with local church partners and more than 7,500 volunteers who helped with home construction, relief distributions, and other projects to help people rebuild their lives.

A new church was planted in one of the hardest-hit communities, Ishinomaki, by a pastor who returned to his hometown to volunteer with Samaritan’s Purse. Shuzo Suzuki started the church in an apartment building we had restored.

“There has never been a church in this area,” Pastor Suzuki said, “but my hope is that this church will have a firm foundation, that many people will believe, and that there will be many Christians in this area one day.”

Through our international emergency relief efforts, we worked to bring critically needed food and other relief to victims of war, natural disaster, disease and famine with the purpose of sharing God's love through His Son, Jesus Christ.

More than 170,000 refugees living in five camps in South Sudan received clean water, medical care, food and other necessities.

Our Disaster Assistance Response Teams helped disaster victims in places like the Philippines, where torrential rains brought flooding that destroyed homes and crops.

operation Christmas Child reached a milestone this year— more than 100 million shoe box gifts collected since Samaritan's Purse launched the project in 1993. We give God all of the glory, and we praise Him that multitudes of boys and girls have heard

the Gospel through this project. As the symbolic 100 millionth Operation

Christmas Child shoe box gift was given to little Brenda Valdez, she smiled shyly and ducked her head. She was barely able to wrap her arms around the colorful box, but as the 5-year-old sifted through its contents, her face lit up with an ear-to-ear grin.

Evilyn Pinnow, 12, had waited a month for this moment, journeying from her home in Fort Atkinson, Wisconsin, around the United States to collect various toys, school supplies and toiletries for a little girl she had never met in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic.

Evilyn and Brenda sat side-by-side among about 250 other children opening Operation Christmas Child shoe box gifts. As Brenda unpacked her box, Evilyn explained the story behind each item. There were candy canes from Alex Nsengimana, who received a shoe box after surviving the genocide in Rwanda. Another past shoe box recipient, Oksana Nelson, had contributed a musical stuffed lamb that played “Jesus Loves Me” to Brenda’s special box.

Each item was a treasure to Brenda, especially the little pink leather Bible. “We read a verse together, and I learned that God loves me,” she said. “I never dreamed of a gift like this.”

In addition to the millions of children, their parents, and community members who have come to faith in Christ through Operation Christmas Child, many churches have been planted across the globe as a result of shoe box gift distributions.

We work through local pastors to deliver the gifts and share the message of eternal life through Jesus Christ. Fidel Lorenzo, the volunteer national coordinator for Operation Christmas Child in the Dominican Republic, said that seven to 12 churches are planted in his country each year after shoe box distributions.

“The Dominican Republic is at the perfect moment to change the next generation, and Operation Christmas Child is the perfect instrument that will allow us to make this change,” he said. “It is more than a shoe box. It’s changing the life of a kid, a family, and a nation.”

Good news, Great Joy These youngsters in South Sudan were some of the millions to receive shoe box gifts and learn about the Gospel this year.

More than 196,000 volunteers here in the United States helped collect and process shoe boxes. Internationally, we trained 41,679 volunteers to lead children through The Greatest Journey discipleship program.

God has used Operation Christmas Child and The Greatest Journey to bring the Gospel to communities even in the world’s hardest-to-reach areas, where previous evangelistic efforts have often been met with closed doors and life-threatening violence.

In India, a predominantly Hindu country, local Operation Christmas Child leaders heard of a group of about 60 children who were meeting to study the Bible. The town was not originally slated to receive shoe boxes or The Greatest Journey lessons, but the local Operation Christmas Child team decided to send some of the gifts to that group of children.

One boy there had been praying for two years that his family and other people in the village would come to know the saving grace of Jesus. After he received his shoe box gift and

started The Greatest Journey lessons, he shared his burden for the salvation of his neighbors with others within their small community of believers.

Using what they learned from The Greatest Journey, this little band of young Christians boldly began sharing the Good News with everyone around them. Now his village is being transformed by the power of the Gospel as many who hear the message of salvation are making decisions for Christ. Dozens have now been baptized.

“The Lord is working wonderfully in this village,” said one of the local Operation Christmas Child leaders. “God already had plans to reach this village, and Operation Christmas Child was used by Him for this purpose.”

“I planted, Apollos watered, but God gave the increase. So then neither he who plants is anything, nor he who waters, but God who gives the increase” (1 Corinthians 3:6-7, ESV).

The Samaritan's Purse discipleship program The Greatest Journey is bringing the life-changing message of the Gospel to youngsters around the world.

Last year, Christian leaders in more than 74 countries were able to offer the Bible lessons in their own languages.

Over 1 million boys and girls have graduated from the program and received a New Testament.

Over 650,000 children have made decisions for Christ through The Greatest Journey.

the freedom to openly share the Gospel with patients is the most powerful incentive for Christian physicians and other medical personnel who serve overseas through World Medical Mission. “It’s freeing to be able to talk with my patients about what matters

most in life,” said Dr. Abby Miknaitis, who served at Hospital Loma de Luz in Honduras. “Medical care is a great opportunity to minister. If they know I care about their physical needs, they’ll know they can trust me when I try to help with their spiritual needs.”

When one of her patients shared that his marriage had serious problems, Miknaitis used the opportunity to talk about God’s forgiveness of sins through Jesus. She told him that surrendering his life to Christ was the only way to true peace.

“I explained that it’s not necessarily an easier life to follow God, but it is a much better life with eternal results,” said Miknaitis.

When the man said he wanted to accept Christ as Savior, Miknaitis quickly grabbed the hospital pharmacist and local pastor. “We prayed together, and my patient made the best decision of his life right there in the clinic,” she said.

Miknaitis and her family began serving in Honduras through World Medical Mission’s Post-Residency Program and are now living there full-time. The two-year program helps young physicians follow God’s call to the mission field after residency and lay a foundation for a lifetime of service. Since the program began in

2004, 94 post residents have been placed in hospitals worldwide, where they have treated over 790,000 patients in Jesus’ Name.

The Post-Residency Program is just one of the ways World Medical Mission supports Christian hospitals overseas. Last year, we sent hundreds of volunteer doctors and dentists to medical facilities around the world on short-term mission trips. Many of them served more than once. Critically needed medical equipment and supplies were also shipped from our warehouse to hospitals and clinics in dozens of countries.

Our staff worked to revitalize and expand aging mission hospitals that have been serving the sick for decades in countries like the Democratic Republic of Congo, Liberia, and Nigeria.

We praise God that through this ministry, thousands of people saw His love in action and heard the Gospel, and many came to faith in Christ.

Since 1977, World Medical Mission has worked to support evangelical mission hospitals and clinics by arranging short-term mission assignments for medical personnel and providing essential equipment and supplies.

Over $10 million dollars of critically needed medical equipment and supplies was sent overseas.

A total of 678 medical personnel served on short-term mission trips.

Medical facilities in more than 60 nations received critically needed resources from World Medical Mission.

dozens of youngsters from some of the most remote areas of the globe were given a new chance at life

through the Children’s Heart Project last year. Hospitals and surgeons across the United States performed critically needed heart surgeries for boys and girls. With the support of Christian host families and host churches, we were also able to share the Good News of Jesus Christ.

For most of his four years, Edwin’s (pictured right) life had been filled with pain and despair. His parents sold their land and farm animals to afford increasingly expensive witch doctor treatments to heal their son.

Eventually his mother, Sharon, made an arduous 12-hour trip by car across their home country of Uganda to a hospital where a visiting cardiologist serving with Samaritan’s Purse diagnosed Edwin with a heart defect. After his evaluation, we arranged for him to have surgery in Florida, and a Christian host family and church lovingly cared for him and his mother.

Sharon was anxious as she sat in the waiting room during Edwin’s procedure. A witch doctor from her village had told her that her son would

die while the American doctors were working on him. When the surgeon announced that the operation was successful, she was finally able to smile. A member of the family hosting Sharon shared the Gospel with her and told her that all good things, including her son's healing, come from the Lord. Sharon said she knew God had brought her son through the surgery, and she wanted to give her life to the Lord. Right there in the waiting room, she prayed to accept Christ as her Savior.

As he recovered, Edwin ran through the house and continually showed his mother all the new things he could do because of the new energy he had from his repaired heart. Sharon called her husband in Uganda to tell him that their son finally had a chance at life because of God's love and healing power. Like Sharon, he gave his heart to Jesus.

“I praise God for everything He has done for me,” Sharon said. “I am so grateful that my child is healed. I thank God for the doctors. The Lord used His hand through them, and they brought healing.”

From the highlands of Bolivia to the Kenyan bush, the Lord is using Samaritan’s Purse animal and agriculture projects to help tens of thousands of people provide nourishing food for their families. In 2012, our staff and Christian partners distributed livestock, seeds, and

tools to farmers in more than a dozen countries while teaching them ways to increase their harvest and care for their animals.

Yon Meak never learned how to keep the family livestock healthy while growing up in his village in Cambodia. By the time he was raising his own family, Yon was a rice farmer and cut wood for his income. However, he did not have enough money to support his family of five children.

When Samaritan’s Purse started an animal project in his area, he eagerly signed up. Our staff gave him the training he needed to raise livestock. We then gave him two piglets, 600 fish fingerlings to start his own fishpond, and materials to build a chicken coop for his chickens.

“I was very happy that Samaritan’s Purse started helping us with the chickens, fish, and pigs,” Yon said. “I knew this would help give my family better opportunities for the future.”

In just a short time, Yon had plentiful food to eat in his home and was able to sell the surplus in his village for additional income.

“Before, we were a poor family,” he said. “Now I don’t have to go to the market to buy fish and chicken. Everything is better than before, and we have enough food.”

Our team did not only help take care of Yon’s

physical needs, they also showed his family the unconditional love of Christ. Our local church partner, Pastor Sam Nang, shared the Gospel with Yon during regular home visits. Everyone in the family eventually made decisions for Christ.

“They went to my house and shared the Gospel with my family,” Yon remembers. “They showed me love and did not discriminate because I was a poor farmer. When I became a Christian I found hope for my life, and I felt happy.”

Because Yon wanted to share Jesus’ love with others, he formed a Bible study group in his village and began to attend a school to become a pastor. Now he is leading 18 men and women in a home church with five young adults and 50 children.

“I hope that I can share the Gospel with many people in my village,” he said. “I also hope to be a model family to others in the community because I want the people to receive salvation from Jesus.”

“Thank you to Samaritan’s Purse for the work you have done,” Yon said. “On behalf of everyone in this village I say thank you and may God bless you.”

FreSh Start Almost one-third of the people of Cambodia live on less than $1.25 a day. Samaritan's Purse trains and equips them to cultivate gardens (left) and fish farms (right) so they can raise nutritious food for their families and sell the extras at the village market.

ministry HigHligHts

Working in the Name of Jesus Christ, Samaritan's Purse teaches farmers sustainability techniques, trains herdsmen, and provides fishermen with boats and equipment. These projects raise hope for an abundant future.

More than 100,000 people were provided with livestock and other animals in over a dozen countries.

Over 175,000 fruit trees were distributed to families.

Some 3,000 families around the world were given the seeds and tools needed to start vegetable gardens.

samaritan’s Purse has water, sanitation, and hygiene projects across Africa, Asia, Latin America, and the Caribbean. These allow us to meet desperate physical needs while at the same time sharing the Good News of Jesus Christ, who said: “I will give of the fountain of

the water of life freely to him who thirsts” (Revelation 21:6, NKJV). Mangar Makuach, a small village in South

Sudan, is just one of the remote areas that benefitted from Samaritan’s Purse water, sanitation, and hygiene projects. A woman named Abuol was one of dozens there who surrounded the vehicle and sang as our team arrived to drill new wells. Before we came, there was no nearby water source. They were forced to walk more than two hours to the nearest river. Sometimes it was dry, so they had to go even further.

The lack of water made simple tasks like washing dishes unthinkable. “That’s why all of us are filthy as you see us now. When we saw you coming, we sang because we know our condition will never be the same,” Abuol said.

Dirty, unsafe water causes millions of deaths each year. Many of those are small children. Deadly waterborne bacteria, such as cholera, can ravage entire communities within just a few weeks.

Samaritan’s Purse completed two wells in Mangar Makuach, both fitted with new hand pumps. The community also received health and hygiene training. “Our village is totally different

now,” Abuol said. “We will not have to travel a long distance in the hot sun to collect dirty water, and the children can go to school on time. Now our focus will be on farming since you have killed the greatest enemy—the lack of water.”

The wells in Mangar Makuach are among 91 Samaritan's Purse installed in 2012 across the state of Northern Bahr el Ghazal, providing safe, dependable water to over 45,000 people.

To give individual families access to clean water in their homes, we distributed 7,000 household water filters. In addition, we helped over 50,000 people have access to better sanitation facilities.

In Haiti, our teams have worked to bring water and hygiene education to tens of thousands of people since the earthquake that hit the country three years ago. “I feel I’m another person,” said 20-year-old Estinfil Adelene who gave her life to Jesus after attending hygiene classes that included presentations of the Gospel.

“The water keeps me clean on the outside, and Christ has washed away my sins and shame on the inside,” she said.

Pure JOY In places like Honduras (left) and Liberia (right), women and children often have to walk hours to collect contaminated water. Through our projects, we are bringing clean water closer to their homes.

Samaritan's Purse has a variety of projects around the world to provide clean water for families and promote safe hygiene practices.

Samaritan's Purse provided clean water to communities in 11 countries such as Cambodia, Kenya, and Liberia.

Over 400,000 people gained access to clean water through new and restored wells, boreholes, and filters.

More than 100,000 trained in proper hygiene and sanitation practices.
