The Maze RunnerTrailer• Uses dramatic music and sound effects to build tension and help convey the theme of the movie which is survival

• The narrative of the film is reflected through dark and dull colours used – desaturation

• The storyline is based in a post-apocalyptic world in the future and the fonts used match the metallic futuristic theme

• The synthesized music becomes more and more dramatic as the editing of images speeds up to create the dramatic climax

• The USP of the film is Because the film is an adaption of a novel

• The off screen dialogue said by characters is matched with a range of shots revealing narrative

• At the beginning of the trailer a handheld camera shot of the main character in a lift which he is unfamiliar with helps to convey his fear and confusion

• A ticking sound effect is used at the start of the trailer to signify some kind of bomb that is about to go off – i.e. The build up to the climax of the trailer

• The intertitles used to split up the film clips address the audience directly by using imperatives such as ‘Experience the beginning’

T he Fault In Our StarsTrailer• The music at the start of this trailer presents a very quirky and up-Lifting atmosphere for its audience to match the personalities in the film

• The USP of this film is because the film is an adaptation of a novel

• The trailer uses the main character to create a voice over in first person narration– this could be because the book is based around the thoughts and feelings of that particular character; this is also done to aid the audiences empathy

• The colours of the trailer are bright and natural to match the theme of the Up-lifting story

Page 5: Samantha etirdge top 3 trailers

• The colours of the inter-titles match the colours used for the book and the fonts used are hand written again to match the book

• The music and the atmosphere of the trailer changes when the main charactersays a particular line – this complements the themes of the film and the storyline

• The trailer uses some of the most popular quotes from the novel to narrate the story and to captivate the people who have read the book: quotations such as “I am quite un-extraordinary” “I hope you realise that you keeping your distance from me in no way lessens my affection for you” “I’m a grenade, one day I'm gonna blow up and I'm going to obliterate everything in my wake” and “you don’t get to choose if you get hurt in this world, but you do have a say in who hurts you...and I like my choices”

21 And OverTrailer• The music used in this trailer is quite loud and boisterous to complement the 3 male lead characters in the film

• The colours vary from being quite bright and natural to represent being at university to being dark and musty to represent going on a night out and being in a club

• The target audience for this film is between 18 and 30 because it is about going out and getting drunk with your friends so it is more relateable

• The inter-titles are bold and black so that they stand out - this again is used to compliment the young male characters personalities

• The shots and music speed up to the climax of the trailer which is in slow motion to make it more effective

• The sound effects and dialogue used, correspond with the visual of the trailer

• The shots do not go in chronological order of the film – the trailer starts with a scene to show you what the film is going to look like later on and then jumps back to how things ended up like that

• The companies that created this film are used to break up the shots of the film as intertitles

• A minute into the trailer, the inter-title appears to the beat of the music – this is effective because it makes the title more exciting

• There are a few different types of music in the trailer to help convey the changes that happen throughout the night

Key Learning PointsI have learnt:• That there are 3 different types of trailers:Theatrical trailers - usually around 3 minutes long, come out a few weeks/months before the film and show the most informationTeaser trailers - usually around 30 seconds to 1 minute long, come out months in advance (sometimes just after the film has been finished) and shows the need to know information TV spots which show less than 30 seconds, come out just before or when the film is in the cinema and advertise the movie

• I have learnt the key conventions to making an effective trailer – putting the credits/film title/release date at the end so that it is more memorable, having a dramatic climax represented by building music and fast pace editing and using very short clips to give the audience chance to realise what is happening without giving away too much.

• That the trailers for a film are better for advertising a film than a poster as they are multi-modal (they show clips from the film, they have dialogue and they provide a little bit more information) and posters only show an image and a few hints to what the film is about.
