Jubilee Year of Mercy May 15, 2016 Solemnity of Pentecost Announcing the Jubilee Year of Mercy, Pope Francis challenged us to proclaim God’s mercy “to everyone without exception . . . again and again, with new enthusiasm and renewed pastoral action” (Misericordiae Vultus, 12). Pentecost proclaims that the door locked for fifty days is thrown open at last. No longer closed in on itself, the community speaks to crowds from different backgrounds, distant lands, exotic languages. Everyone hears their native language. The Spirit does not restore Babel’s uniformity, but forges unity-in-diversity of language, race, nationality—embracing all without exception. The relativism of our world tells us that we should be tolerant of all things, that there is no absolute truth. Baptism Registered parishioners should contact the office for instruction. This should be done at least six months before the birth of your baby.

Marriages Registered parishioners should contact the parish office at least six months in advance of making marriage arrangements.

Sick Calls Please contact the parish office if you need a priest to come to your home to anoint you, or to be anointed at a weekday Mass.

We are seeking volunteers to assist with the Catholic prison ministry at the Citrus County Jail.

We are in need of men and women. There is a special need for Spanish speaking or bilingual volunteers. Training will be provided. If you would like to volunteer or to learn more about this ministry, please call the Parish Office at 746-9422.

In September of 2015, the first phase of the forming of the St.

Scholastica Parish Advisory Council (PAC) was completed, comprised of seven members. We are now seeking to complete the full complement of the Council. Any St. Scholastica parish member who would like to serve on the council is asked to submit your name, a short personal resume and a picture to the parish office no later than Thursday, May 19th. Voting for

two positions will take place in September.

The Pregnancy & Family Life Center of Citrus County is in desperate need of retired nurses (RN or LPN) to

volunteer at the Center. We are open Monday through Friday from 10 am to 3 pm, and any day and time you can provide help would be greatly appreciated. Please contact Christina Terrasi at [email protected] for more information.

There will not be a General meeting in May.

We will have our Corporate Communion on Sunday, May 15th, the Rosary at 8:30, followed by the 9:00 Mass. Immediately following the Mass, arrangements have been made to have our brunch at the Plantation Inn. This is our last function for the year, and all husbands and friends are welcome to join us. Some of our Charities that we were able to contribute to this year are Day Star, Pregnancy & Family Life Center of Citrus County, Heifer International, Casa, K of C Golf, Rosaries, Saint John Paul 2 Scholarship Fund, Replacing and Cleaning the Church Lights and donating a good sum to the Debt Reduction. This would not have been possible without the support of our Members and Parishioners at all our functions. Thank You.

The Respect Life group and the Knights of Columbus of the parish will again be collecting donations for the Citrus County Pregnancy and Family Life Center. We distributed the empty baby bottles at all the Masses on Mother’s Day, to be filled with your donations and returned on Father’s Day, June 19th.

St Scholastica Rosary Makers completed 4 years In November 2015, and have distributed over 25,000 rosaries to Missions, children at Saint John Paul II school, Nursing homes, Diocese of St Petersburg Propagation of Faith, Prison and Homeless Ministry.

The Traveling Chalice Program is a reminder in your home to pray for our Priests and Vocations to the religious life. The Chalice is available to be received in May and the continuing summer months. “Order” and “presbyter” are not everyday words in our vocabulary, since we think of order as a quality of life rather than a collective noun, and “priest” usually does just fine in everyday conversation. Yet each word has deep roots in our tradition. At an ordination we select men for service to the community. Ordo is a Latin word drawn not from pagan religious life but from Imperial Rome. It meant a distinct body standing apart from the people, such as a body of people responsible for civil governance, senators for example. Think of the selectmen or board of governors in your civic home, and you will get the idea. The church borrowed the term to describe the place of certain people within the people of God, thus the “order of deacons,” “the order of presbyters,” and even “the order of virgins, catechumens, widows, neophytes, penitents,” and so on, as distinct groups within the church. Just as ancient Rome had various uniforms for the ranks and stations in civil life, so too did certain garments give clues to membership in an “order” in the church. So, our tradition favors the idea of an ordination liturgy not as receiving something so much as being received. This is clearly expressed in the liturgy. The “kiss of peace” is given only by the ordaining bishop and priests to the newly “ordained,” not by the faithful, the deacons, or the concelebrating bishops who are present. —Rev. I’m not very good at telling jokes. I like them, but after I hear one and

laugh at it, I let it go and forget it. I suspect this doesn’t just apply to jokes. The Gospel today hints that the disciples may have had the same weakness when Jesus says the Spirit will “teach you everything and remind you of all that I told you” (John 14:26).

Jesus spent three years teaching his disciples about the kingdom of God. While he may have condensed his message to “Love God . . . and love your neighbor as yourself” (Mark 12:30–31), he spent most of his time showing them how much God loves them and how to love their neighbor. He used parables as examples and miracles as signs of the Father’s love. He answered their questions and explained things privately. Knowing that this would still not be enough, he promised to send the Spirit after he had risen. He seems to have known that sometimes you just can’t learn by listening. You have to experience some things to understand them. Sometimes you have to explain something to someone else before you understand it yourself. And that is what the disciples would do.

When they received the Spirit after Jesus’ resurrection, they began to talk about Jesus to anyone who would listen. They also began to do the things Jesus talked about. They fed the poor and healed the sick. Thus they began to experience Jesus in those around them. They would remember what Jesus had taught them and apply it in their lives. They even accepted suffering for their faith.

We too can receive that promise from Jesus to have the Spirit teach and remind us. As we share our faith with others, we begin to experience Jesus in them. Just talking about our faith helps it to grow. As we listen to the Lord in prayer, we are reminded of passages in the Bible that we have read or heard from the altar on Sunday. We begin to understand how they apply in our lives. We may remember things that seemed to be very bad but turned out to be God’s plan—maybe losing a job, only to find a better one; or moving away from friends, only to make new friends later. God of the covenant, You called Abram to leave Ur of the Chaldees and guided him to the Promised Land.

God of the Exodus you led your people out of slavery in Egypt and brought them to a land flowing with milk and honey.

God of the Exile, you restored your people after their captivity in Babylon and settled them in the holy city, Jerusalem.

Watch over and protect all who travel.

Guide their steps with your outstretched arm, and at the end of their journey lead them safely home to their loved ones and friends. Amen.

Two years ago, during Rome’s quiet summer, Pope Francis took a day off to visit privately with some old friends, whose identity took Catholic Italy by surprise: Evangelical Protestants. They welcomed Francis to their Pentecostal Church of Reconciliation, where Francis asked pardon for Catholic persecutions and celebrated the Holy Spirit’s “pentecostal work.” Unlike Satan, declared Francis, who creates division among God’s children, the Holy Spirit creates a diversity rich and beautiful. And unity; not uniformity, Francis specified, but unity in diversity. Francis named the Spirit’s gift “reconciled diversity.” Pentecost’s rich treasury of scriptural readings, for Saturday’s vigil and Sunday’s morning liturgy, traces the Holy Spirit’s work from creation’s beginning, through Jesus’ resurrection, into the church’s earliest days, now into our days. Kindled in our hearts, the Spirit’s gentle fire is ours to share generously, even with those most strikingly different from us. All hearts are Spirit-warmed by reconciled diversity.

Come Holy Spirit!

Reconciled diversity illumines Pentecost and fills this Jubilee Year of Mercy. Locked doors fly open as Pentecost’s Spirit sends forth once-frightened disciples to share Jesus’ gospel in countless languages, uniting crowds of divergent—sometimes hostile—nationalities into one newborn community filled with peace. Paul exhorts the Corinthians, and us, to celebrate our differences, for gifts of the same Spirit build our diversity into Jesus’ one body. Paul bids the Romans, and us, to embrace life bestowed by “the Spirit of adoption, through whom we cry, ‘Abba, Father!’ ” In today’s traditional Gospel, Jesus sends forth previously frightened disciples, and us, to love others as Jesus loves us. So Pope Francis sees Pentecost’s Spirit, in this Jubilee Year of Mercy, summoning us afresh from past mediocrity and selfish isolation to share God’s mercy enthusiastically and generously. The alternative Gospel declares keeping Jesus’ commandments not a mindless obligation but a loving choice, closing Easter Time with Jesus’ enduring promise of the Pentecost Spirit’s abiding presence: that Spirit “will teach you everything and remind you of all I told you.”
