Walter Monco Day at the Races

The family of Walter Monco hosts a Day at the Races in Walter’s memory every year at Arlington Park Race Track to raise money for the school scholarship fund. Walter was a long time parishioner, attended daily mass, and was an ar-dent supporter of the parish who passed away from cancer five years ago. His family wanted to honor his memory in a way that would provide a lasting legacy of support to the parish. This year the event will be held on Sunday, June 22nd, beginning at noon. For further information or to make a donation please contact Mrs. Mijal at the school office.

The Ascension of our Lord Jesus Christ

In today’s first reading St. Luke says that in his first book (his gospel account) he dealt with everything Jesus did and taught up until the day he was taken up into heaven. He recounts Jesus’ many post resurrection ap-pearances and instructions to the disciples. Now Jesus instructs them to wait in Jerusalem, for in a few days they will be baptized with the Holy Spirit. As usual, the disciples misunderstand, and ask him if he is going

to restore the kingdom of Israel. Jesus tells them it is not for them to know the Father’s plans; but that they will be his witnesses, not only in Jerusalem and Judea, but “to the ends of the earth.” After saying this Jesus is taken from their sight. Suddenly two men dressed in white garments (angels) appear to them and ask them why are they standing here looking up at the sky. The angels tell the apostles that Jesus has been taken up into heaven and will return to them in the same way. In the second reading St. Paul writes to the Ephesians, praying that God will send them the Spirit of wis-dom and revelation, giving them knowledge of Jesus Christ; that their hearts be enlightened so that they may know the hope and the richness of the glory that is their inheritance, and that they may believe in the power of God made mani-fest in Christ. The gospel from Matthew has the final words and deeds of Jesus on earth. On arriving at the designated mountain Jesus tells them that, “All power in heaven and earth has been given to me. Go therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, until the end of the age.”

Acts 1: 1-11 Ephesians 1: 17-23 Matthew 28: 16-20

Ascension of the Lord Page 3

From the Pastor’s Desk

Today is the Feast of the Ascension, Alleluia! This feast is the culmination of the Easter season and the goal of the Pascal mystery. What began on Good Friday as a tragedy finds its fulfillment in the Ascension. The good news is that this is not just about Jesus. It is about us! Jesus triumphs for our salvation. His Ascension is the promise that we, too, one day will rise and be with him forever. This startling gift should be the center of our lives as Catholics.

Christ’s Ascension is the fulfillment of the promise that we will be (and actually have been) re-united with God. And, of course, the Ascension is the prerequisite for Jesus to be able to send us the Holy Spirit (“unless I go away, the Holy Spirit cannot come”), which we will celebrate next week on the Feast of Pentecost.

St. Luke reminds us in the reading from the Acts of the Apostles that for the past forty days Christ has appeared to them with proofs that he, indeed, is the same Christ who was crucified and is now risen from the dead. He has been teaching them about the kingdom of God and promises to send them the Holy Spirit. When he ascends into heaven the disciples are staring at the sky. This is a perfectly normal reaction. Watching someone ascend the sky to heaven doesn’t happen every day. As they are watching and pondering two men (angels) appear and promise them that Je-sus will return in the same way (the promise of the Second Coming). Jesus gives them another promise as well as a mission. He says that when the Holy Spirit comes they will receive power and that they are to be his witnesses to all the ends of the earth.

This is the same mission that the apostles receive in the gospel reading from St. Matthew. Jesus tells them that be-cause he has been given all power in heaven and earth that they are to “Go, therefore, and make disciples of all na-tions, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you.” Jesus ascends to heaven so that he can send the Holy Spirit to be with us and to give us the power and wisdom of God himself to guide us through this life. All the post-resurrection appearances are meant to reassure the disciples, and us, that Jesus can be believed. Not just his words, but that he is, in fact, who he says he is: the Son of the Living God who promises life to all who believe in him. We are baptized into this faith of the Apostles and are commanded to obey all that he taught us. We have received the power of the Holy Spirit and are given the Great Commission, to make disciples of all nations by proclaiming the love of God in our words and actions. At the end of the gospel Jesus gives us the great promise of the Ascension, “Behold I am with you always.”

On Sunday, May 18th the new Bishop Jakubowski Street Sign was unveiled on Austin Ave. in front of the church. Doing the honors were Alderman Cullerton, Bishop Jakes’ family and the Sisters of Mary of Providence. Also in attendance were Fr. Tom Mulcrone, Fr. Hal Stanger and many of our parishioners. I blessed the sign and, in a short prayer service, asked Bishop Jake for his continued guidance and blessings upon our parish, and that the sign will be a visible reminder of all he did for us and inspire all of us to carry on Christ’s mission in our faith community.

The School Board, Mrs. Mijal and I held a Town Hall Meeting for school families on Thursday May 22, unveiling our exciting new plans for the school. We are building a new science lab, computer room and library in the lunchroom area. This will free up several classrooms to accommodate our increased enrollment. We hope to have the construction completed before the new school year begins. We are also expanding the afterschool program with new options for art, theater and sports, as well as additional opportunities for academic tutoring.

We bid a fond farewell to the class of 2014. They celebrated with the annual 8th grade luncheon on Wednesday and had a wonderful Graduation Mass on Friday. They are a wonderful group of young people, not only prepared aca-demically for successful high school careers, but also formed in Christian faith and service. They will be missed, but it is time to let them move on. I hope to continue to see them around campus and church.

The Kindergarten Graduation will take place this coming Tuesday morning. It is always exciting to see their joy and enthusiasm.

The Easter Season ends next Sunday with the celebration of Pentecost, commemorating the gift of the Holy Spirit and the birth of the Church. There will be a second collection to support the medical and retirement needs of the priests of the Archdiocese of Chicago. Please read the Cardinal’s letter on page five.

Have a great week. Sincerely, Fr. Neil

June 2014

Dear Friends in Christ

On the weekend of June 7 ·8, 2014, we will take up a special collection for the Retired Priests of the Archdiocese. During 2013, we mourned the death of thirty of our retired priests - the most who have died in a single year.

At their funerals, I listened to accolades for their ministerial service-the children they

baptized, the homilies they preached, the Masses they celebrated, the hospitals and nursing homes they visited, the children they taught in our schools and religious-education programs, the weddings they witnessed and the families they comforted at countless funerals. Time and again, I heard stories of the selflessness with which our retired priests helped many parishes avoid reducing Mass schedules and other services.

Our retired priests still number 193, and they rely upon your help now. The Priests'

Retirement and Mutual Aid Association (PRMAA) cares for our retired priests. As you know so well, the costs for health care, prescription drugs and nursing-home care continues to increase. Also, the priests' pension fund remains seriously impacted by the economic downturn. This special collection will help us continue to support our retired priests. This special collection in June is different from the December collection for retired men and women religious where the collection goes to those in religious orders; Archdiocesan priests do not receive any funds from that collection.

I want to take this opportunity to thank all of our retired priests for their lives of service

and devotion. I also remember in prayer all of our retired priests who have died.

I am thankful to all of you for your immense generosity in this collection last year. I ask you to repeat your kindness this year. Your donations, your prayers and your good wishes are an affirmation of our retired priests.

Please pray for an increase in vocations to the priesthood. You and those you love are in

my prayers; please keep me in yours.

Sincerely yours in Christ,

Francis Cardinal George, O.M.L Archbishop of Chicago

Clothing Drive Thank you to everyone who dropped off bags of clothing in support of the Parents' Association's Clothing Drive last month. We collected over 6000 pounds of clothing and textiles. That's twice what we collected at our first drive in the fall. Keep cleaning out those closets over the summer and watch the church bulletin for the date of our next drive this fall.

Have a great summer!

Have you noticed something new in the restrooms in Kernaghan Hall? The Parents' Association had diaper changing stations installed in both the women's and men's restrooms.

Parents in need will have access to these during all masses and other events hosted in the Church.

Many thanks to Father Neil for supporting this request.

Micah Zaker

was selected as one of the 2014 Golden Apple Scholars. Over 1700 High School Seniors in Illinois were nominated and he is one of the 175 students selected.

This commitment to become a teacher, and to teach in schools of need is an important part of the faith and education he received growing up in the St. Robert Bellarmine Parish and School Community!

Congratulations Micah!!

KEEP YOUR CHILDREN SAFE

The following was received from the Community Action Projects division of the Chicago Police Department: To keep your children safe, it's best that you monitor their phone. Look through their apps, texts and pictures. They may feel that you're invading their privacy, but let's be honest... You're paying the phone bill, so you can do whatever you want! So, as you monitor your kid's phone, keep an eye out for these 7 apps you may not be aware of, that in my opinion are very dangerous: Yik Yak - This App is one of the newest and one of the most dangerous. It allows users to post text-only Yaks of up to 200 characters. The messages can be viewed by the 500 Yakkers who are closest to the person who wrote the Yak, as determined by GPS tracking. Users are exposed to - and contributing -sexually explicit content, abusive language and personal attacks so severe that schools are starting to block the App on their Wi-Fi. Although the posts are anonymous, kids start revealing personal information as they get more comfortable with other users. SnapChat - This App allows users to send photos that will disappear after 10 seconds. Once the recipient opens the picture, the timer starts. Then it's gone. From both the sender's phone and the recipient's phone. However, the recipient can take a screen shot of the photo and have it to share with others. This App enables kids to feel more comfortable "sexting" with peers. KiK Messenger - This is a private messenger app and is coveted by those under 18 for a number of reasons. The App allows kids to send private messages that their parents can't see. There is very little you can do to verify the identity of someone on Kik, which obviously poses the risk of sexual predators chatting with your child. And again, this is an easy tool for sexting. Poof -The Poof App allows users to make Apps disappear on their phone with one touch. Kids can hide every app they don't want you to see on their phone. All they have to do is open the App and select the ones they don't want you to see. Very scary! The good news about this App is it is no longer available, which isn't uncommon for these types of Apps. But, if it was downloaded before it was deleted from the App store, your child may still have it. Keep in mind that Apps like this are created and then terminated pretty quickly by Android and Apple stores, but there are similar ones being created constantly. Some other names include: Hidden Apps, App Lock and Hide It Pro. Omegle - This App has been around since 2008, with video chat added in 2009. When you use Omegle you do not identify yourself through the service - chat participants are only identified as "You" and "Stranger". You don't have to register for the App. However, you can connect Omegle to your Facebook account to find chat partners with similar interests. When choosing this feature, an Omegle Facebook App will receive your Facebook "likes" and try to match you with a stranger with similar likes. This is not okay for children. There is a high risk of sexual predators and you don't want your kids giving out their personal information, much less even talking to strangers. Whisper - This is a meeting App that encourages users to post secrets. You post anonymously, but it displays the area you are posting from. You can search for users posting within a mile from you. A quick look at the App and you can see that online relationships are forming constantly on this App, but you never know the person behind the computer or phone. One man in Washington was convicted of raping a 12-year-old girl he met on this App just last year. Down - This application, which used to be called "Bang with Friends," is connected to Facebook. Users can categorize their Facebook friends in one of two ways: they can indicate whether or not a friend is someone they'd like to hang with or someone they are "down" to hook up with. The slogan for the App: "The anonymous, simple, fun way to find friends who are down for the night." If that alone doesn't scare you, I don't know what will! I know it's overwhelming to keep up with your kids and their online habits. But just remember to check their phones often, and even more importantly have real life conversations with them. Discuss the dangers of the Apps and make sure they understand the need to keep personal information private.
