advance for your support. Saint Ignatius of Loyola – July 31

Saint Ignatius was born the youngest son of a Basque noble family. As a young soldier, he fought against the French army and eventually sustained a crippling leg injury. During his long recovery, he read books about the life of Christ and the saints and was duly converted. After a pilgrimage to Jerusalem he went to study in France, where he also did evangelical work as a

layman. Together with a small group of followers, Ignatius offered his services to the Pope. They were ordained as priests and in 1540 the Pope gave formal approval to their religious order known as the Society of Jesus. Ignatius re-mained in Rome as the head of the Jesuits which grew to over one thousand members at the time of his death in 1556. Saint Alphonsus Liguori-August 1

Saint Alphonsus Liguori was born near Na-ples in 1696, and was the son of a noble-man. He was a successful lawyer before being ordained a priest at the age of 29. In 1731, Alphonsus with Sister Maria Celeste Crostarosa co-founded a community of nuns and a year later he founded the Con-gregation of the Holy Redeemer; a commu-nity of priests dedicated to preaching to the

poor in rural towns. He was bishop of Sant Agatha dei Goti for thirteen years before retiring due to ill health. He pub-lished more than thirty theological and devotional works and as a result was declared a Doctor of the Church in 1871. Food for Thought

Neil Kurshan in his book, Raising Your Child to Be a Messiah, tells this provoca-tive story of a medical student who had vowed never to entrust her children to a housekeeper. When the student was a child, her wealthy parents would vacation in Europe each summer and leave her in

the care of a nanny. The year she was eleven, the nanny quit right before the parents were to go on vacation, but the parents were able to hire a substitute. The girl came upon her mother wrapping up and hiding all the family jewels and silverware. She asked why, since her mother had never done that before. Her mother explained she could not trust the new servant with the family valuables! That insensitive remark cut the little girl to the heart. Was she not a "family valuable" of greater importance than knives, forks or jewelry? She vowed that day that she would raise her own children.

In Christ’s Peace,

Again, this weekend we are given three more parables about the Kingdom of Heaven. The first two (buried treas-ure and the great pearl) tell what happens when someone discovers the Kingdom; they are filled with joy at their dis-covery. Both main characters go out and sell everything they have to possess the “treasure”. The third tells us more about the kingdom that all are welcomed. It is like a net that gathers everything its way, good and bad alike, that are to be sorted at the “end time”. What have we learned in the past three weeks in Jesus’ seven parables about the Kingdom? First, that as members of the Kingdom we are to spread the Word (sower), and that we are not to worry where the seeds land. Second, in the Kingdom there is good and bad (wheat and weeds) and the two live side by side and with patience the good sur-vives over the bad. Third, the Kingdom is not just in the ma-jestic but often found in small events (mustard seed) and even though it is small it has great power (yeast). Fourth, it is like a real treasure (buried treasure and pearl) worth more than anything we can ever posses and calls for total determination and commitment when found. Lastly, in the Kingdom there is real judgment, even though it (the net) gathers all into it, the angels, in the end, will separate the good from the evil. The first two parables compare the Kingdom to a treasure. The finder of each treasure goes all out to possess the treasure. So too, we are encouraged to do the same in our “Christian living” giving it the full reverence and dedication it deserves. The kingdom should be so treasured to us that we would do anything or give up anything in order to pos-sess it and live by its values. Sr. Diane Bergant says, “If our Christian life is not something we ‘treasure’, it will likely be-come just another burden in an already overly busy life, just one more trinket in an overstuffed jewelry box." Lastly, what Jesus says about the kingdom in these para-bles is applicable to anything we should treasure. Fine chi-na should not be handled like plastic cups and plates. When we possess a treasure (the Kingdom), it should be treated for what it is: Joyful living--en-joy-ment--comes from preserving and relishing what is important and of value to us. Sound System Upgrade So far we have received 68 gifts totaling $15,180. Several Anonymous Cash Donations of $440, together with our re-bate of $4000, gives us a total of $19,620 towards our Goal of $32,000. If you wish to make a one-time donation to cov-er the remainder of the cost, simply use an envelope and mark the outside with Sound System Upgrade and do the same on the memo line of your check. Thank you in

“…the kingdom of heaven is like a buried treasure…

…a pearl of great price… ..is like a net thrown into the sea,

which collects fish of every kind. “

All things work for good, and God is glorified in all. Such is the character of the Kingdom of God.
