MOTHER TERESA OF CALCUT-

TA

Mother Teresa, in all aspects of

her life, was a generous dispenser

of divine mercy, making herself

available for everyone through her

welcome and defense of human

life, those unborn and those aban-

doned and discarded. She was committed to defending

life, ceaselessly proclaiming that “the unborn are the

weakest, the smallest, the most vulnerable”. She bowed

down before those who were spent, left to die on the

side of the road, seeing in them their God-given dignity;

she made her voice heard before the powers of this

world, so that they might recognize their guilt for the

crime – the crimes! – of poverty they created. For Moth-

er Teresa, mercy was the “salt” which gave flavor to her

work, it was the “light” which shone in the darkness of

the many who no longer had tears to shed for their pov-

erty and suffering.

Her mission to the urban and existential peripheries re-

mains for us today an eloquent witness to God’s close-

ness to the poorest of the poor. (Homily of His Holiness

CANONIZACIÓN DE LA BEATA

MADRE TERESA DE CALCUTA

Madre Teresa, a lo largo de toda su

existencia, ha sido una generosa dis-

pensadora de la misericordia divina,

poniéndose a disposición de todos

por medio de la acogida y la defensa

de la vida humana, tanto la no nacida como la abando-

nada y descartada. Se ha comprometido en la defensa

de la vida proclamando incesantemente que «el no naci-

do es el más débil, el más pequeño, el más pobre». Se

ha inclinado sobre las personas desfallecidas, que mue-

ren abandonadas al borde de las calles, reconociendo la

dignidad que Dios les había dado; ha hecho sentir su

voz a los poderosos de la tierra, para que reconocieran

sus culpas ante los crímenes -¡ante los crímenes!- de la

pobreza creada por ellos mismos. La misericordia ha si-

do para ella la «sal» que daba sabor a cada obra suya, y

la «luz» que iluminaba las tinieblas de los que no tenían

ni siquiera lágrimas para llorar su pobreza y sufrimiento.

Su misión en las periferias de las ciudades y en las peri-

ferias existenciales permanece en nuestros días como

testimonio elocuente de la cercanía de Dios hacia los
