ST. NICK’S 100th ANNIVERSARY

In 1916, plans were made to start a parish in the area of the Queensboro Hospital for Communicable Diseases, which is the location of Queens General Medical Center. Property was purchased in January of 1917 and a church was built on the corner of Parsons Blvd. and Union Turnpike by October of that same year. The area and the parish have developed into a diversified community with people of many different languages and cultures. This is St. Nick’s today! In order to celebrate our 100th Anniversary as a parish community, a different event has been planned each month to bring us together to celebrate, to pray and to work.

November 12-13, 2016: St. Nicholas of Tolentine Art Show and Museum in Tolentine Hall. December 18, 2016: Lessons and Carols in Church (starting at 3:00pm). Also in December, Vespers on the Four Sundays of Advent. May 21, 2017: Spring Concert with all choirs, time TBD in Church (Music Director will coordinate rehearsal schedule at a later date). June 25, 2017: Parish Picnic, Cunningham Park (time TBD). September 10, 2017: Feast of St. Nicholas of Tolentine, Church and Tolentine Hall, 12:15pm. We ask all parishioners to come forward and get involved in some of these programs wherever you feel more comfortable. Contact the rectory office to let us know of your interest and availability in various activities.

From the Pastor’s Desk….

Christ is our Hope

The first reading (2 Maccabees 7) presented the famous story of the seven sons who died a mar-tyr’s death, in hope of the resurrection. This was the first written example scholars know about that explicitly confirms a belief in the resurrection. The martyrdom of the Jewish mother and her seven sons revealed pre-Christian spirituality among many Jews. Justice was in the hands of God. He will reward the faithful and punish the evil at the end of time. Jesus teaches us in today’s Gospel to believe and hope in the resurrection of the dead! The Sadducees were only looking for a way to trap Jesus. Also, they wanted justify their belief that life ends here on earth. How-ever, they were wrong. Through His discussion with them, Jesus reassures us that life does not end here. Hence Saint Paul reminds us that: “If our hope in Christ is only for this life, then we deserve more pity than anyone else (I Cor 15, 19). Our hope must not end here because we are on a journey toward eternal life in Christ. There are many people in our society who do not believe in an afterlife. Our faith is strong and clear that there is a resurrection, there is reason to hope for a future life beyond what we can see and touch in this material world. The Catechism of the Catholic Church teaches us that: “Hope is the theological virtue by which we desire the kingdom of heaven and eternal life as our happiness, placing our trust in Christ’s prom-ises and relying not on our own strength, but on the help of the grace of the Holy Spirit”(CCC1817). Our belief in the resurrection challenges us to live in this life with the conviction that our word and deeds matter, and have consequences, for our eternal life with God. May we always take up this challenge and remember that each one of us has a place waiting for us in heaven with our names on it and, if we are faithful to Jesus our savior and His Church, it will be ours forever.
