MERCIFUL LIKE THE FATHER

Our Holy Father has declared a Holy Year which is dedicated to living out in our daily lives the mercy which God constantly extends to all of us. “The motto of the jubilee will be “MERCIFUL LIKE THE FATHER” and it serves as an invitation to follow the merciful example of the Father who asks us not to judge or condemn but to forgive and to give love and forgiveness without measure.”

The Holy Father wishes to develop three themes during this jubilee. First is that “the mercy of God is not an abstract idea, but a concrete reality through which he reveals his love as that of a father or a mother, moved to the very depths out of love for their child.” Mercy is the foundation of the Church’s life. Holy Father reminds us that “The Church’s very credibility is seen in how she shows merciful and compassionate love.”

The second theme offers practical ways to live well the Holy Year: go on a

pilgrimage,; do not judge or condemn but forgive and give, avoiding gossip, envy and jealousy; have a heart open to the fringes of society and bring consolation, mercy and solidarity to people who live in precarious situations; take up the corporal and spiritual acts of mercy with joy; and observe the ’24 Hours for the Lord’ initiative which encourages prayer and the sacrament of reconciliation, in every diocese during Lent.

The Holy Father issues calls for justice and conversion as the third theme. He

asks members of criminal organizations and those involved in corruption to change their lives and embrace God’s mercy. Pope Francis notes too that both Judaism and Islam “consider mercy to be one of God’s most important attributes and he trusts that this jubilee will foster an encounter with these and other religions that will open us to even more fervent dialogue toward greater knowledge and understanding, eliminate every form of closed-mindedness and disrespect and drive out every form of violence and discrimination.

Worldwide events of recent days in nearly all countries give ample examples of

how very much we need to embrace mercy and forgiveness as Our Father showers us with both.

Our first parish event on Monday, December 14 – ICONS OF GOD’S MERCY

will be and excellent jump-start to a year-long jubilee of living mercy and forgiveness as God shows us.

Please see reverse side for more information on the Dec 14 event.

Saint Mary’s Catholic Church ~ 15164 Juniper Dr. Marne, MI 49435 616.677.3934 www.saintmarysmarne.org

Prayer of Pope Francis for the Jubilee Lord Jesus Christ, you have taught us to be merciful like the heavenly Father, and have told us that whoever sees you sees Him. Show us your face and we will be saved. Your loving gaze freed Zacchaeus and Matthew from being enslaved by money; the adulteress and Magdalene from seeking happiness only in created things; made Peter weep after his betrayal, and assured Paradise to the repentant thief. Let us hear, as if addressed to each one of us, the words that you spoke to the Samaritan woman: “If you knew the gift of God!” You are the visible face of the invisible Father, of the God who manifests his power above all by forgiveness and mercy: let the Church be your visible face in the world, its Lord risen and glorified. You willed that your ministers would also be clothed in weakness in order that they may feel compassion for those in ignorance and error: let everyone who approaches them feel sought after, loved, and forgiven by God. Send your Spirit and consecrate every one of us with its anointing, so that the Jubilee of Mercy may be a year of grace from the Lord, and your Church, with renewed enthusiasm, may bring good news to the poor, pro-claim liberty to captives and the oppressed, and restore sight to the blind. We ask this of you, Lord Jesus, through the intercession of Mary, Mother of Mercy; you who live and reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit forever and ever. Amen.
