A. Personal Statement

Neil Mapes Neil Mapes is co-founder and CEO of Dementia Adventure. He is a Clore Social Fellow, RSA Fellow and was selected by an expert panel of judges at NESTA and the Observer newspaper as one of “Britain’s New Radicals” – 50 people and organisations changing Britain for the better. Neil has a background in clinical psychology, dementia advocacy and adventure travel. Motivated by experiences in his own family he has worked for over 20 years to enable people living with dementia to have more choice and control in how they live their lives, bringing joy and positivity into re-framing how we currently understand dementia. Neil is widely regarded as an inspirational international speaker, author, trainer, facilitator, and social innovator.

11. Dementia Choices, overseeing pilot site delivery and co-production of a range of awareness raising information products on self-directed support for people living with dementia (March 2011)

12. Green Exercise and Dementia, an innovative research project conducted as a Visiting Fellow with the University of Essex. The first of which to meaningfully link and explore the benefits of green exercise for people living with dementia (February 2011)

13. Mental Capacity Advocacy Project (MCAP), 2006 to 2009 - with Age Concern England. Set up, leadership and development of this innovative pilot project, this concluded in Oct 2009.

14. Evaluation of older people’s advocacy project in Ukraine, conducted an evaluation of a volunteer advocacy project provided by Age Concern Ukraine, a Department for International Development funded project with Age Concern England (March 2009)

15. Multi Media Advocacy Report, June 2008 - with Age Concern England. Led on one of the first research projects, within the scope of the Mental Capacity Act 2005, examining the social exclusion of older people who lack mental capacity - conducted by the RIX centre using a multi-media advocacy approach.

16. Promoting the mental health and well-being of older people – new qualifications, May 2008 - Led a team of Age Concern colleagues working in partnership with City & Guilds to jointly launch the first national qualifications specifically focused on older people’s mental health. Also played a critical role in the tri-tripartite relationship with Age Concern, Pavilion and City & Guilds to ensure learner and trainer packs were published to support these qualifications.

17. Younger people with dementia, 2006 – researched and established a specialist dementia outreach service with Alzheimer’s Concern Ealing, still in existence and now called the “Working age dementia group” at the renamed charity Dementia Concern Ealing.

18. Worldwide tour leading, 2002-2004 – career break and led adventure travel tours for Explore Worldwide – leading walking tours in the Canary Islands, cultural tours in Turkey, camping tours in USA and exploring the highlands and jungles of Guatemala.

19. An ACE Night Out, 2001 - started up one of the first Alzheimer cafes in the country, for Alzheimer’s Concern Ealing, a service still running and thriving.
