SAINT LOUISCATHOLIC CHURCH

The “Blues” developed in America from African American roots, probably after the Civil War (1861-1865) from “field hollers”–a form of communication among black plantation workers in the South. Lyrics reflect loneliness or sorrow; it influenced rock, folk and country music– all about love gone bad, a lover betrayed, a relationship that failed. In our first reading today Isaiah sings the blues in his 8 century BC love ballad: a relationship has been betrayed– the covenant relationship with God was forgotten; worship was ritual for show; the wealthy exploited the poor; justice was ignored. Jesus sang the “blues” the day before he told this parable. When he entered Jerusalem, people cheered but he wept for the city. A disappointed, frustrated lover grieved: “If only you knew what is needed for your peace! But now you cannot see it.” The Scriptures today talk of opportunities missed; God’s people fail to live up to what they should do and be, yet there is hope that we can in fact get things right. Some years ago my parents and I visited family in Sicily. They still farm vineyards and make wine; I don’t know how many decades or centuries the family has done it. The vine is the first of the cultivated plants mentioned in Bible (Genesis 9). It was a thoroughly useful plant– fruit and leaves could be eaten, wood used for fuel; like hickory and mesquite it adds delicious flavor; blossoms were fragrant; wines of Israel were renowned in the middle east.It took labor intensive effort to get the vines to grow, a year round task: soil had to be dug and cleared of stones, heavy annual pruning, hoeing, thinning and support of the fruit clusters, irrigation. The vine could live to be hundreds of years old with a trunk over a foot thick; a wall/hedge would discourage predatory foxes or wild boars or thieves; a tower would stand guard over the grapes and the wine press would process the grapes. With good reason the owner expected some result after such time and effort.Isaiah spoke of “wild grapes” produced by the vine that was Israel – sour, stinking, rotten grapes– symbol of “bloodshed” and the “outcry”– lack of social justice, concern for poor and needy. Jesus’ parable repeated elements of Isaiah’s song almost verbatim. The workers produced no fruit; they were thieves, violent and even murderers. This was addressed against Jewish leaders of his time. There is a sense of disloyalty and ingratitude. What more could I have done? asks God in OT. I’ll send even my Son, says God in NT.We can apply this parable to all of us, not just to the Jewish leaders in Jesus’ time. What kind of fruit to we bear? Do our lives reflect all that God has done for us? God has great expectations from us, not just as a businessman expecting profits from his investment, but as a parent who has great hopes for his children.
