The King’s Authority: Scott Hahn Reflects on

the Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time:

Last week, Jesus announced the kingdom of God is at hand. This week, in mighty words and deeds, He exercis-es His dominion—asserting royal authority over the ruler of this world, Satan. Notice that today’s events take place on the sabbath. The sabbath was to be an everlasting sign—both of God’s covenant love for His creation, and His deliverance of his covenant people, Israel, from slavery. On this sabbath, Jesus signals a new creation—that the Holy One has come to purify His people and deliver the world from evil. “With an unclean spirit” is biblical language for a man pos-sessed by a demon, Satan being the prince of demons. The demons’ question: “What have you to do with us?” is often used in Old Testament scenes of combat and judg-ment. And as God by His word “rebuked” the forces of chaos in creating the world, and again rebuked the Red Sea so the Israelites could make their exodus, Mark uses the same word to describe Jesus rebuking the demons. Jesus is the prophet foretold by Moses in today’s First Reading. Though He has authority over heaven and earth, He becomes one of our own kinsmen. He comes to rebuke the forces of evil and chaos—not only in the world, but in our lives. He wants to make us holy in body and spirit, as Paul says in today’s Epistle. In this liturgy, we hear His voice and “see” His works, as we sing in today’s Psalm. And as Moses tells us today, we should listen to Him.

Next Week’s Second Collection Is for: The Poor

Dear Families: During Lent our community will participate in CRS Rice Bowl a faith-in-action program that invites us to encounter our neighbor, as companiions on the journey, through prayer, fasting and almsgiving. We will reflect on how an encounter with our neighbor can be transformative. We will see how our prayers, fasting and alms can support those worldwide who are forced to flee their homes to find safety or better opportunities. As we prepare for this holy season, it is especially meaningful to come together in

prayer as a family. Reflecting on the crosses of hunger, poverty and war carried by our brothers and sisters forced to flee their homes, we have an opportunity to also reflect on our roles in caring for them as members of our human family. Please consider these suggestions in your family’s Lenten plan:

Use your CRS Rice Bowl and Lenten Calendar daily to guide your prayer, fasting and almsgiving.

Read the Stories of Hope and daily reflections to inspire your Lenten journey and guide your Lenten almsgiving.

Prepare simple, meatless meals on the Fridays of Lent to eat in solidarity with our brothers and sisters around the world.

Visit crsricebowl.org/stories to watch videos of the people and communities you support through your Lenten gifts to CRS Rice Bowl.

We will collect your CRS Rice Bowls at the end of Lent, so stay tuned to learn more. Thank you for participating in CRS Rice Bowl with your family.

Concierto Musical

Caridades Católicas - Casa Hogar Infantil St. Peter-St. Joseph’s (St.PJs)

My Dear Brothers and Sister in Christ, Countless lives are spiritually transformed and uplifted thanks to the generosity of individuals like you to the annual Archbishop’s Appeal. Pray on how you can make a sacrificial gift to the 2018 Archbishop’s Appeal. A gift will help continue the Appeal ministries that form and educate future priests, deacons, and catechists, as well as provide food, clothing and other social service programs that aid the most vulnerable in our community. If you have already responded to the Archbishop’s letter sent to your home, thank you for your generosity! If you have not yet had an opportunity, we invite you to pray and consider making a gift to this year’s Appeal. Pledge envelopes and pencils are available in the pews (and/or in the vestibule) of the Church. Once completed, place your Appeal pledge envelope in the offertory during Mass or drop it in the mail. Online gifts can be made at www.archsa.org/archbishops-appeal or by calling the Office of Archbishop’s Appeal at 210-734-1604. Thank you for your prayers and generosity. May God bless you!

Catholic Charities - St. Peter-St. Joseph’s Children’s Home (St.PJs)

Thanks to the generous donors from the Archbishops Appeal, St. PJ’s was able to provide an eleven year old little boy, who had never experienced the benefits of a stable environment, with a safe place to live, where all of his basic needs were provided as well as the emotional and spiritual assistance he needed in order to heal and thrive. Removed from his home by Child Protective Services due to a long history of physical abuse, neglectful supervision and emotional abuse, the young boy was having difficulty in school and was acting out with negative and inappropriate behaviors. Recognizing this was his only way of expressing all the emotions and confusion building inside him for years, the caring staff at St. PJ’s began helping him heal. This young boy received therapy, assistance with his school work, maintained communication with his siblings, and participated in fun social activities. Little by little, staff and counselors began to see changes in this young, angry boy as a fun, energetic child began to emerge. During his 5 months at St. PJ’s, he improved his grades and behavior at school, learned to interact with his peers in an appropriate manner, and eventually was successfully reunited with his mother.
