One of the most dramatic moments in the storyline of the Acts of the Apostles is the conversion of Paul. Luke sees it as such a significant event that he offers three accounts of it: Act 9:1-19; 22:3-16; 26:2-18. By the time he wrote Acts (about twenty years after Pauls’ martyrdom). Luke saw Paul’s conversion and subsequent thirty-year mission to the Gentiles as the key to understanding the birth of the Church. Paul whose Semitic name was “Saul,” encountered the resurrected Christ on his way to the city of Damascus, where he had intended to continue his persecution of Christians. This event changed Paul’s life forever and set the early Church on a course that would eventually result in countless numbers of Gentiles professing faith in Jesus as the long-awaited Jewish Messiah and Son of God. What is heard in today’s reading is Luke’s account of the early stages of Paul’s missionary work following his conversion. There is good reason why the disciples’ initial reaction to Paul was fear and mistrust: “They were all afraid of him, not believing that he was a disciple.” In Acts, prior to his conversion, Luke describes the terrible deeds of Paul: “Saul [also known as Paul], meanwhile, was trying to destroy the church; entering house after house and dragging out men and women, he handed them over for imprisonment.” Allowing Paul to infiltrate the church in Jerusalem would have been considered very dangerous. It was only by Barnabas’ witness and testimony of Paul that the disciples welcomed him. In the immediate aftermath of his conversion, Luke reports, Paul was still not well-received by many of the Jews in Jerusalem. In fact, “the Hellenists” (Jews who spoke Greek) tried to “kill him.” Fearing Paul’s safety, the disciples helped him escape to Tarsus. According to Luke, with Paul no longer persecuting the Church, and he himself safe from harm (at least for the time being), the Church enjoyed a period of “peace,” was guided by the Holy Spirit, and grew in numbers.

Pbro. Santiago Martin (FM) Responsable MARC.
