TWENTY FIRST SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME ~ AUGUST 25, 2019

FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK

YOUR HELP IS NEEDED! Volunteers are greatly needed to teach the grades listed below. ALL TRAINING IS PROVIDED. Please prayerfully consider sharing our Faith with the children of Saint Joseph. You will find it to be a very rewarding experience.

SUNDAYS (10:10-11:35 am) —Kdgtn (1); Grade 1 (2); Grade 3 (2); Grade 4 (3); Grade 6 (2)

TUESDAYS (3:45-5:10 pm) —Kdgtn (1); Grade 1 (2); Grade 2 (3); Grade 4 (2)

WEDNESDAYS (4:45-6:10 pm) —Grade 7 (3); Grade 8 (3)

Call Deacon George or Mrs. Arlene Kennedy at 201-261-1144 to volunteer or to learn more.

I have long admired St. Augustine (354-430), whose feast day is this Wednesday. Partly, this is because of his stature as a Catholic teacher,

since, after the Apostolic era, his only real rival is St. Thomas Aquinas. But his masterful use of language is also a major attraction. I have several collections of his thoughts. One was expertly assembled by the Augustinian priest Donald Burt. After I was assigned here a while, I finally got around to calling Villanova Univesity where he worked, to see whether he might be interested in offering a presentation, only to be told that he had recently died. (There’s a lesson there somewhere.) Father Burt once wrote one of the finest brief summaries of Augustine’s life I’ve ever come across: Augustine was born in the fifth century in North Africa of a dedicated Christian mother and a happily pagan father. He grew into an adult with little or no faith in anything. He had an eleven-year relationship with a good woman, and by her had a child. Eventually he sent her away when she seemed to be an obstacle to his career. He was a teacher who had trouble controlling his students and eventually gave up that profession to become a speech-writer at the Imperial Court. After years of wandering, he rediscovered Christ in his early thirties and was baptized. For the next forty years he served the church in North Africa as a parish priest, bishop, and confidant of the humble and powerful. He preached to his parish congregation every day for forty years. Finally, as he lay dying, he could hear pagan hordes pounding on the gates of his beloved city. At times Augustine has been accused of being too severe in his opinions: of not appreciating life’s enjoyments enough. This is not so, as anyone who has read him at any length can readily testify, since he highly values the beauties of God’s creation, as many of his sermons attest. “Visible things are delightful, they’re beautiful, they’re good,” he says in one of them. “See the One Who made them: He it is that is your hope, and he it is that will later on be the reality you will possess.” For Augustine, nothing even begins to compare with the importance of knowing and following Jesus Christ. As he once wrote:

(continued above)

St. Augustine by Antonello da Messina

Make your choice; either to love things temporal and pass away with time’s passing, or not to love the world, and to live forever with God. The river of time sweeps us on; but there, like a tree growing by the river, is our Lord Jesus Christ. He took flesh, died, rose again, ascended into heaven. He willed to plant himself … beside the river of things temporal. If you are drifting down to the rapids, lay hold of the tree: if you are caught up in the world’s love, lay hold of Christ. He for your sake entered into time, that you might win eternity… .

The contemplative nun Sister Maura Sée once paid suitable tribute to St. Augustine when she wrote of him that

… at the end of Augustine’s life it must have seemed that his work would be destroyed. The Vandals … would throw out the Catholic bishops and oppress the faithful, and never again would North Africa be the secure civilized country he had been born in, and which had been the temporal background of his teaching. But what he could not know was that down the ages his writings would inspire the learned, and his words find an echo in the hearts of ordinary men and women, the successors of the “Beloved” whose shepherd he had been.

Getting to know this great saint is one of the true joys of deeper immersion into Catholicism. Many fine modern translations of his works are available.
