He said to them, "But who do you say that I am?" Simon Pe-
ter said in reply, "You are the Christ, the Son of the living God." Jesus said to him in reply, "Blessed are you, Simon son
of Jonah. For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my heavenly Father."

13th Sunday in Ordinary Time
Have you ever heard that the Gospel is radical? In our times, we hear that word and think of fundamentalists, radical activists, or extremists - peo-ple who go beyond limits to achieve their goals and may not consider
themselves bound by normal propriety or morality. Their ethos might not be so different from James and John in today's Gospel. "Lord, do you want us to call down fire from heaven to consume them?" This isn't so foreign to some of the stories of the Old Testament. Yet Jesus rebukes
them. He won't be exacting in the way his contemporaries expected. There will be no radical rain down of fire and brimstone. Jesus is radical
in another way: the call to discipleship.
"The Son of Man has nowhere to rest his head." "Let the dead bury their dead. But you, go and proclaim the kingdom of God." "No one who sets a hand to the plow and looks back to what was left behind is fit for the king-dom of God." These can be difficult passages to read. These are not nor-
mal things to hear! It can be easy for many of us to avoid the exacting nature of the Gospel, which might not be what we think it is. James and John wanted to set the bar high for others on the outside and to punish
those who didn't meet that standard. Jesus sets the bar high for his disci-ples, those who say they want to follow him. He may be using some hy-perbole, but it's only to send a clear message. This is a radical call, one that has a cost. To truly put God and others first, before ourselves, will
involve sacrifice. How is Jesus asking you to be radical today?

Holy Cross Catholic Academy welcomes our new 8th
grade history teacher – Mr. Bob Bennett!
Greetings, My name is Bob Bennett. I was a Midwesterner at birth, raised in Illinois. A year after high school I enlisted in the United States Navy. I served 4 years as a Russian linguist while stationed in Japan. After my discharge I attended and graduated from Texas A&M University, majoring in history and lan-guages. In 1986 I began a 33-year career with AISD, 19 of those years teach-ing history to middle school students, and 14 years as a middle and elemen-tary school counselor.
I have been married to my wife, Traci, for 24 years. My son, Sam, will be a senior at Tascosa this year.
I look forward to serving the students and families of Holy Cross. Thank you for allowing me the opportunity!
Welcome to Holy Cross Mr. Bennett!

Are you in need of completing last minute service hours?
First Opportunity We have about 5 small shelves that need a little TLC. We will
provide the paint and materials, we simply need friends to
help paint them with 2 coats of paint.
Second Opportunity We had a parent build custom shelves to better organize our used uniform
closet. Now, we are in need of friends to help fold, label and organize used
pants, shorts, etc. onto the new shelves.
Third Opportunity We are in need of friends to help paint the interior walls of classrooms. We
would like to have 3 volunteers per classroom. This would include painting
the walls and some trim (we would provide the paint and materials). So far,
we have 5 of the 11 classrooms covered with volunteers.
What a great way to get involved!
If you are interested in helping out with any of the opportunities
listed above, please call us at 359-1604 or you can e-mail
Mr. Hernandez at [email protected].
