Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe November 23 , 2014

SOLEMNITY OF OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST, KING OF THE UNIVERSE Today we celebrate the Feast of Christ the King. When we think of a King, we think of someone who is very remote from his people and who lords his authority over them. But Christ is not like that. He lives among us, and came not to rule but to serve. The best way to show our loyalty to him is by serving one another. Jesus will come to judge the living and the dead and give the kingdom over to the Father. Ezekiel 34:11-12. 15-17. God is portrayed not so much as a judge of his people, but as someone who cares for them as a good shepherd cares for his sheep. The prophet Ezekiel speaks of a God who will shepherd his flock and judge be-tween the rams and the goats. 1 Corinthians 15:20-26. 28. At the end of time Christ will reign as universal King, having overcome all hostile forces, including death. Saint Paul tells the Corinthians that at Christ’s coming he will hand over his kingdom to his Father. Matthew 25:31-46. We don’t know exactly how the last judgement will happen, but we do know what the followers of Jesus will be judged on. In Saint Matthew’s Gospel today, Jesus describes how he will recognize those who served him by serving the least among his family. The theme of the final judgment, including the images of divine kingship and a divine shepherd, dominate today’s liturgy. Instituted by Pope Pius XI in 1925, this feast offers us the opportunity to deepen our understanding of the mystery of Christ and beckons us to encounter Jesus, the true shepherd who guides his flock home to his Father. In the Gospel and in the First Reading we see the image the good shepherd who, while caring for all the sheep in his flock, shows particular care for the weak and wounded ones. This was the image Christ himself used to describe his friends and his mission. And his followers show that they truly belong to his kingdom by their service of the little ones.

LA SOLEMNIDAD DE NUESTRO SEÑOR JESUCRISTO, REY DEL UNIVERSO Hoy celebramos la fiesta de Cristo Rey. Cuando pensamos en un rey pensamos en alguien que es un hombre muy ale-jado de su pueblo y que los gobierna a ellos. Pero Cristo no es así. Él vive entre nosotros, y no ha venido a gobernar sino a servir. La mejor manera de mostrar nuestra lealtad a él es sirviendo unos a otros. Jesús vendrá a juzgar a los vivos ya los muertos y a darle el reino al Padre. Ezequiel 34: 11-12. 15-17. Dios es retratado, no tanto como un juez de su pueblo, sino como alguien que se preocupa por ellos como un buen pastor cuida de su rebaño. El profeta Ezequiel habla de un Dios que será el pastor de su rebaño y juez entre los carneros y las cabras. 1 Corintios 15: 20-26. 28. El Evangelio y la Primera Lectura nos muestran la imagen del buen pastor que cuida de todas las ovejas en su rebaño. Muestra su atención especial para los más débiles y heridos. Esta era la imagen que Cristo mismo utiliza para describir sus seguidores y su misión. Sus seguidores deben mostrar que realmente pertenecen a su reino por su servicio a los más pequeños.

THANKSGIVING DAY We invite you to bring donations of canned food and/or a monetary contribution to our Thanksgiving Day Mass on Thursday, November 27th at 9:00 a.m. (please do not bring perishable foods, ie., fresh vegetables, fruit, meat or bread). These gifts will be used by our St. Vincent de Paul office to assist those in need from our parish. You will be invited to place your donations as an offering in front of the altar during the presentation of the gifts.
